Welcome!

/trv/ is a slow board, you don't need to bump more than once a day -- it's OK if your thread is not on the front page, we look several pages deep here. You can do that. too, looking for threads on your topic.

Questions are welcomed, as are threads sharing experiences or generally discussing travel. For very general questions, you can get answers faster at other sites. Google is your friend. Start there, then come back here for specific questions. Some good links for basic info, and a few Pet Peeves of the board, are included within this thread.

Hi, how can I convince my mother about hitchhiking?
Im already 18, but she says that if I go, she will go mad, she will divorce my father and that our family will crumble and she looks serious (and seriously mad)

Time to wean off the baba OP
Either lie to her or tell her to suck it up, and if she follows through with her threats you'll cut her out of your life (which might be wise).
Anyway your thread sucks.
>>
>>982369
Just do it man
If she decides to get divorced its because the relationship was shit before
And if she is trying to guilt you into staying home instead of living your own life then she is obiously batshit and you need to cut her off
>>
>>983391
Exactly this!
>>
After more talking with her, I found out that the issue is that I want to go alone, travelling with someone is no problem for her. And I dont think its just her. About 70% of people I know thinks that if I will hitchhike then there is no way I will not be raped or at least robbed. And I dont personally know anyone who hitchhiked. So I understand a little why she doesnt like the idea

Don't see too many Pakistan threads here. Pakistani expats I've met while traveling in the Middle East have been the most hospitable human beings I've ever encountered, and I'd be interested in visiting their home country. The visa situation for Americans doesn't seem too bad; I just have to get my ass down to an embassy.
Some general questions,
-I'm an outdoor nut. Unfortunately it seems like the more beautiful areas are also the more dangerous ones. What region strikes the best balance between safety and scenery?
-I speak English and basic Farsi; would I survive there linguistically? Do many Pakis speak Farsi?
-Is it true I also need an Indian visa to get into Kashmir? That sounds like the sort of thing which is technically true but in reality I could manage with just a Pakistan visa.
-Is the coast nice?
Pic related, who's to say I won't come away with a Kalash waifu.

If you haven't been to Pakistan refrain from ignorant shitposting in my thread please and thank you.

Evening guys. I'm planning on travelling to the US from 9th October to 14th November for my first trip overseas.

My picture is the current map of where I plan on going. Green lines are flights and blue lines are road travel. So far, this is my breakdown

Number of nights total: 35
NYC: 7 nights
Indianapolis: 3 nights
Chicago: 5 nights
DC - 5 nights
Boston - 5 nights

I'm up to 25 out of 35. Apart from NYC of 7 nights, I have no hard times that are set (NYC is 7 nights as I need to be in Indy on Sunday 18th October to see my glorious Colts beating down the Deflatetriots.

As I'm travelling from Aus, I won't have a car nor am I planning on renting one (under 25 so extra fees) and in any case, I'm not too fussed. I've no issue with using services like Megabus or Amtrak etc.

yes, I've been to Cabo which is touristy as fuck but a little less so if you wander away from the beaches. The experience was amazing, and I ate better that week than I ever have in my life.

Thanks for the info, I'll probably be hitting that upper limit as I want to be trying out plenty of different meals.

Is the alcohol there cheap or should I budget more for that in bars and restaurants?
>>
Stayed in a top tier all inclusive in cancun for 8 days last year. It was my first big vacation. Incredible time.

It's very cheap even in most cantinas. Expect to pay anywhere from $1.50 to 3 for domestic beer. Imported is a little more expensive but the domestic is pretty good to be honest. Go for Modelo Negro or Modelo Especial.

Tequila/mescal is super cheap, as is rum. Other booze might be expensive, don't know I mostly drunk beer and rum over there.

Nagoya doesn't have much to do beyond a day in the city itself, but there are a number of day trips you can take from it, such as Ise Shrine to the south and Inuyama plus Meiji Mura to the north.

Nagoya has AMAZING food though. Miso katsu is just great. Go to Yabaton and you'll get some good stuff. Yamachan is the place to go for the chicken wings that Nagoya is also famous for.

Hey /trv/, I'm sick of being a depressed, lonely loser, so I've decided to live out my dream of traveling the US in an attempt to "find myself," as cheesy as that sounds. I don't have a car, and was planning on buying a Discovery Pass for Greyhound buses that would let me hop on and off at my leisure.

Unfortunately, I've just learned that it's been discontinued for like three years. What the fuck am I going to do now? Buying individual bus or train tickets would be way too expensive and would kill the cavalier vibe--I don't want to follow points on a map, I want to fucking explore and thrust myself into the world. Would hitching rides be a good way to go? Or am I just asking to get my ass murdered? Also, any recommendations on what I should pack? A hammock, maybe? Should mention I'd be starting from Brooklyn.
>>
>>983372
I went hitchiking for a little bit op and I met the coolest/nicest people I ever met in my life
But I hope you enjoy days in days of not getting picked up and having people look at you as though you were a criminal
You will grow to hate people op when you are on a 20 miles from the closest town in the middle of summer and people just honk at you or look at you and give you a stupid smile and a thumbs up
I cried a lot, I lost my faith in humanity, and life.
But when someone picks you up and takes to you eat or gives you some money. They treat you like a person and you feel like you are a person not just some trash being blown by the wind alongside the road you feel like you could do anything

I guess what I'm trying to say is its not a fun ride but rather an experience
You will definitely discover yourself but will suffer to do so

Alright, this board is starting to be cluttered with a ton of "going to amsterdam, london, berlin, or other easily google-able tourist destination, what do?"

So lets do something a bit more interesting. Lets post photos of food we've eaten while abroad that was amazing.

No, actually not. It's in the Finno-Ugric language group and originated in native tribes in what is today Russia, the Stan-countries, that area. It's not at all related the rest of the Indo-European languages.
>>
>>983279
>mfw dealing with an armchair linguist
Yea, and where do you think Indo-European languages came from? The only existing language 'native' to Europe as such is Basque. Perhaps you're confused by the name of the language family, but every single Indo-European language ultimately originates on the steppes of southern Russia/Kazakhstan. They are no more 'European' than Finnish is either.

The Finns displaced the Sami (another Finno-Ugric group who've been around forever) northwards from lower Finland (the 'ballsack') already a couple thousand years before Jesus, before any major civilizations in Europe had even been founded. Is that not long enough to be considered European?

Finnish lexicon has also picked up a fair amount of non-Indo-European and non-Finno-Ugric loanwords, suggesting that they absorbed another indigenous European group when settling the area. Very few other languages have.

Hey I'm planning to do a motorbike tour of scandinavia next year, most likely in the summer. Pictured is the very rough route I'm wanting to take around the Baltic sea. I've estimated about a months travel time or so

My question is how reasonable is it to camp every day in the northern regions of Norway and Finland? My plan is to ride for 5 hours a day, with breaks to see nature/small villages, then set up camp before nightfall and read a lot.
>>
>>983309

the least reasonable thing is expecting to be able to drive through russia.

you are really going to pay 250 USD for a visa instead of just taking the ferry down to estonia for 30?
>>
>>983309
IMO you are skipping the best parts of Finland (the east and the north). Perhaps consider driving to norway through the western 'arm' of Finland. Also you might not want to drive all the way through Norway inland. The coast is truly amazing.

Camping in the north should be very doable, though the mosquito situation may vary. Also parts of the northern Finland and Norway are pretty far away from everything so check beforehand where you can resupply and bring some food and water with you.

Hey /trv/

Going to China in about two weeks. Will be going to Beijing and Xi'an for sure. What's worth doing in these cities, what's NOT worth doing? I only have a few days in each, so I have to make my time count. Any general tips for traveling in China? Plan to take it slow and see the countryside, too.

Just wanted a China general for all travelers.

>If it's such easy mode for you guys to get laid in foreign countries, Why is there always 10 different posts asking in every asian thread?

Firstly, see the sticky. It's not easy mode if you're terrible at talking to girls in the first place.

Secondly, if you can't get laid, talking about getting laid is the next best thing, imagining girls you can fuck, whether because they like your skin, your money or your passport, is a really attractive thing to do.

So, it's not a request for information really, more like fleshing out a fantasy. We're basically participating in someone's roleplay masturbation session in which they go overseas and get laid.

white folks make up the bulk of this board, and probably the entire site. nigs usually go to japan, i think most of them are wise enough to stay away from china. there are active black posters in the japan and thailand generals.

as for that other question, a buddy of mine once fucked 8 girls in a month here. he usually averages around 4 new girls a month. i once fucked 3 girls in 3 consecutive days. i average about the same, i'm sure i could get more if i actually put more effort into it and went out all the time. month. i've also heard of good looking, blonde, blue eyed tall white dudes fucking 10+ new girls a month here. nigga bucks and brown skins will never get that here :^)

/trv/ I'm planing a short holiday to the North Island at the end of October.
I have a problem and I seek advise here's the scenario.

I've decided on the sights I'd like to see.
My trip has to be bookended with Auckland and Wellington.
The middle can be rearranged, to get the most logical and time efficient route.

1-2 nights in Auckland
Hot water beach
Hobbiton Movie Set
Waitomo Caves
1 night Rotorua Geothermal sites
Taupo Huka falls, Orakei Korako Cave and Thermal Park
1 day Tongariro National Park, New Zealand Tongariro Alpine Crossing
1 night Wellington

Monday - fly to Rotorua - geocaching
Walked along the highway a bit and got up close to Lake Rotorua checking out the view and the interesting houses. Stayed at Crash Palace. Free pasta for dinner - buy your own extra.

Caught the bus from the highway back to Rotorua
$2.70 bus v expensive taxi = bus wins since I don't have ridiculous amount of luggage.

Tuesday - woke up nice and early and drove out from Rotorua to Waitomo in the car we hired the day before. Did the Lost World Tour 4 hour. I recommend doing the 7 hour tour (maybe not in winter though).
Drove to Hobbiton in the arvo and back to Rotorua.

Wednesday - zip line canopy tour. This can now be done at night but not when I was there. Free afternoon.

Thursday - bus to Taupo (I think it was intercity - the sooner you book the cheaper the rates. One guy got a four hour trip for $1. Not making that up.)
Skydive Taupo early in the morning. Do the higher jump if you skydive. Went to the hot pools that the locals go to. Stayed at Urban Retreat.

Friday - bungee in the morning and jet boating with Hukafalls jet in the arvo. They get you up close and personal with the falls. Two of us caught a taxi to make it cheaper.

Sunday - Mountain bike riding in the Redwood Forrest - geocaching

Monday - one hour 4WD at Offroad New Zealand. There is another one that I believe takes you across country. Since I booked through bookme.com.nz and paid about half price they wouldn't do the transfer so I had to hire a car which worked out to be just as expensive. On the plus side I got to drive around Lake Rotorua and stop off at some great views around the joint before returning to the car to the airport.

So at your back packers if anyone else is going to the same place. It might save you hiring your own car.
Consider bookme to book your activities. The down side is that you won't get free shuttles to the activity in most cases.

The things I didn't do was go to the mud baths, night time cultural show, or the Tongariro Crossing. So I didn't do the crossing mainly because you had to pay a whole lot more because you need a guide in Winter. Mud baths, meh I went to hot springs. Cultural show was mainly just bad planning on my part. Haven't heard of Orakei Korako Cave. Don't really care about major cities. White water rafting - either Rotorua or Taupo is supposed to have great WWR.

You haven't said where you are from. The American guy who drove did pretty well considering he was on Mario Karts Mirror Mode. The biggest issues he has was at round-a-bouts and the indicator being on the wrong side. I'm from Straya and I had no problems driving. It's not like Thailand.

I'm from England but Live in Australia.
I have a driving licence but never owned a car in England (took a bus to work) and I don't drive in Australia because in the city I live public transport is good enough so I'm scared.

My plan is to spend one day in Auckland fly to Rotura where i'll go to the hot springs, the lake do some outdoors stuff until in the afternoon when I'll go to the hobbiton tour.

I'll return to rotura and do see some more springs and stuff like that.

In the morning i'll take the bus or i'll have to drive to Waitomo caves, then from here go to Taupo spend the rest of the day and early next morning here then i'll drive/ take a bus to the alpine crossing do that and then drive/bus to Wellington at night, wake up spend one day in wellington then go back home.
