What does /n/ think are the biggest issues that transportation faces? Here are my top 3:1. Ubran sprawl2. Planning cities for cars3. Lack of investment in mass transit

I'd like to have more bike lanes. I'm pretty sure there's literally like one in the entire city and it's on a one way road that isn't even a main road that would be used much
>>816897This is why Minneapolis is better than Amsterdam.
>>817064Because enjoying your own possessions is wrong. It's not fair to people who might not have a yard!
Do you think that cities that ban automobiles are feasible in our lifetimes? A city where all of the roads exist specifically for bicycles, there are no gas stations or parking garages, LBSs are as common as McShit, and there are no fat people? If this does happen, Ideally, all major cities would be connected by railroads with trains frequently traveling between them. That way the people living in this city would not need to have a car to travel to other states/countries. Would you live in a city like this? Please tell me this will happen in our lifetime, /n/.

Personal cars are faster and more comfortable than every type of public transport in my city (and public transportation is very well-developed here) for two reasons:1. Don't have to wait for the bus/subway train/whatever to come2. Don't have to wait while bus/whatever make stopsFreight trucks and shit will always be needed though.

Newfag. Why there is no folding bike?
>>817293They are pretty niche. Good foldings costs about the same as decent road or mountain bike, they aren't that great to ride, etc. Not really a hobby bike.

I was a fireman on the Los Angeles Bakersfield freight pool. I always loved to be on a train with these engines or have a remote train in the vicinity.. Because the remotes would always fail between Ilmon and Caliente around tunnel 1/2. When the remotes lost communication us fireman were put on the remote and run them manually.. in turn we made double pay.. as a fireman and then when we were placed into helper service as an engineer making engineer's pay from the point of manning the helper. Always made for a nice payday.

>>817210I don't wear lycra because I ride off road more often than on road and I don't feel that it's necessary for mountain biking. I wear hiking/backpacking/running T-shirts that I buy at REI. Just make sure that they are a moisture wicking synthetic fabric. I think mine are polyester or a polyester blend, but I've worn the tags off. You should buy cycling specific shorts, though, or your ass will hang out when you bend over. None of mine are Novara brand, but they are basically like these:http://www.rei.com/product/861439/novara-metro-gel-double-bike-shorts-mensThey are not as loose fitting as a casual t shirt and shorts, but they are also not as revealing as lycra.
Cycled in rain in my normal kit. How do I properly clean sandy/rain-soiled cycling shoes?

My guess is they're using a split crank with separate one-way bearings for each half, with some way of locking them together for conventional and feet-together pedaling.>>817253You're thinking of inventors. Daily Ride Thread. How was your ride today?
Newb here, I did 40 km today in 1:40, it felt pretty long to me. There were three climbs in it that ruined me, but felt pretty good to finish.
>>816833Canada has the best trails, a lot better then the Fred roads in the states.
Fair. Close to two hours (two way). Rain/Snow the entire duration, mostly on dirt paths.I got very muddy, but my stuff was all fine.Breifly followed very close behind by a car licence plate:>BE KYNDGot a chuckle from that. Also had an interesting issue with the chain jumping where it should not have. Trying to understand how that was caused....
Good, second test ride on the road,55km,I'm not tired, but I feel something on my left knee,I think it's something related to the cleat position because it was the second day y used the clipless system.Tomorrow I will change the position, and the day after I will test it.The only bad thing about the ride was the wind, when I started there was no wind so I climbed while getting burn by the sun,and later, the wind started blowing to my face, slowering me so much.Oh,and a bald cager told me I should ride on the bike lane, not on the road.
Dropped some Molly at 2am, Did a 100 mile round trip from Houston to the Ocean on my 73' Panasonic, came home, took a nap, went back out for a group ride, went drinking, sobered up, did another 20 miles because fuck it, being on a bike is awesome. Got caught in a storm on the return trip to Houston, but it was fucking awesome. One popped tube but otherwise smooth sailing. One of my better days in recent memory. My plan was to spend the day in playing FIFA, but at 5am I got a wild hair up my ass (because Molly) to hit the Ocean. Certainly can't complain.

>>817268That is because Russians didn't build it, Ukrainians did.
What /n/-related things did you accomplish today, /n/iggers?I just taught myself a lot about derailleurs -- adjusting limit screws, b-tension, etc. (thanks to sheldonbrown.com) Things I had never done before. And I fixed two completely separate issues I had with my derailleurs, with no help! Now I'm going to go out and ride and enjoy my drive train that is in so much better condition in many ways than it was a few days ago.

>>815806>Package 2/3, Size Lottery EditionThe Craft base layer (S) is the right cross-section but nearly too long. It shouldn't be problematic and I imagine that it does a great deal to absorb sweat before it can run down the butt crack area. The undershorts (M) fit snugly, but reach quite far down the leg. I may need to roll up the gripper band to avoid fouling my knee pads. Similarly, the bibs (M) fit nicely on the torso and reach low on my thigh, though they won't have to contend with pads, so that's fine. I'm not so sure about the jersey (M) though: it seems to be too long and maybe slightly too loose. If there was a sponsor on the back of my bibs they would be disappointed. The tyre is a 60-584 Magic Mary. It's going back because I accidentally ordered the Snakeskin version. Wiggle don't have the Super Gravity, so a replacement from CRC is already on the way.I'm a sucker for interesting lubricants, so I got some Squirt lube. Last is a Lezyne Zecto Drive rear light: almost as bright as my NiteRider Solas, but easier to mount and has handy charge indicator. Having two quality rear lights feelsgoodman.jpg>Not pictured>tfw when you figure out the probable reason why the tags on the bibs were just resting in the bag, not actually attached.
I was rolling by a pawn shop and saw they had like 20 bikes outside, each going for a solid 20. I picked one up, old Sears steal ladies bike, and I'm cleaning it up tonight to give to my mom so we can go on rides together.
>>817233>steal ladies bikeSounds about right.
>>817239Fuck, for some reason I was thinking about "steel is real" and fucked that up. My god, what has this place done to me.
There are two types of cyclists: Those that carry tools and have mechanical knowledge, and those that carry a cell phone and have a mom that they still rely on like a child.
>>816674I don't remember, I think it was a brake adjustment. She was on a really old really cheap bike.
I saw this thread a couple of days ago and thought it was funny cause I bet people call someone. Then today I got a new wheelset (tubeless ready) and new tires (tubeless ready). I installed tubes and it took forever and I thought I was going to break my rim or tire putting them on. There is no way I could fix a flat on the trail.
>>817265Protip: Get two plastic tire levers.
>>816667Yeah, he's bullshitting. We all know you need a phone for that, and they are free.
>>817269I have 4. I even used tire soap.
Let's discuss drive train maintenance, /n/.Sheldon Brown says you should remove your drive train components and soak them in solvent on a regular basis. Yet some people claim you should not do this, at least not often, presumably because removing a chain and putting it back on puts wear on the chain.Yet chains have to be replaced more often than other drive train components, and keeping everything really clean will help prolong the chain rings, cassette, and rear derailleur. So I think it could be a good idea. What do you guys do? And how often do you replace your chain, chain rings, cassette, and rear derailleur?
>>812718Thanks, that could be a useful diagram.
>>812502>Even if you have inexpensive components, you should take care of them, you'd be amazed how long something will last if you take good care of it.This. My walmart BSO is in really good shape after 8 years with nothing but some really basic maintenance.
