Welcome to /diy/, a place to:

Post and discuss /diy/ projects, ask questions regarding /diy/ topics and exchange ideas and techniques.

Please keep in mind:
- This is a SFW board. No fleshlights or other sex toys.
- No weapons. That goes to /k/ - Weapons. The workmanship and techniques involved in creating objects which could be used as weapons or the portion of a weapons project that involves them (e.g., forging steel for a blade, machining for gunsmithing, what epoxy can I use to fix my bow) may be discussed in /diy/, but discussing weapon-specific techniques/designs or the actual use of weapons is disallowed. Things such as fixed blade knives or axes are considered tools, things such as swords, guns or explosives are considered weapons.
- No drugs or drug paraphernalia (See Global Rule 1). If you want to discuss something that could involve such things (e.g., carving a tobacco pipe from wood) that's fine, but make sure it's /diy/ related and doesn't involve drugs or it will result in deletion/ban.

Some friendly suggestions for posting:
- First ask Google, then ask /diy/. Your question will probably be better received if you do so.
- List available resources (tools, materials, budget, time, etc.)
- Try to use pictures and explain the goal, if possible
- Be patient, this is a slow board; your thread will be around for days.
- Share your results! /diy/ loves to see problems solved and projects completed!

Hey /diy/, I've been thinking about kotatsus a lot lately. It's almost summer, so I won't need one for a while, but I've been thinking about building my own. There are plenty of resources out there that talk about how to make one, but to be honest? I don't really like what I see out of the current guides up. The Lack kotatsu is functional, but I wanna know if I can improve on the current kotatsu builds for someone doing it themselves.

I figured I should come here to get some ideas about the heating source; buying one made in Japan seems pretty inconvenient due to needing a transformer. Some people say you don't need it, some people stress that you do. I feel like finding an equivalent heating element that can be found in America would work a lot better, but I don't know what would be considered safe or compliant with any standards.

Other ideas I'd like to try to adapt into my eventual build are legs that either can be folded up (for storage) or can be lengthened and shortened (so it can be used as a standard coffee table/be used while sitting on a couch).
I've also been thinking about a table top that can lock into place over the blankets (with an added plus of being completely level.) Lastly, I'm wondering if a round kotatsu would be a worthwhile idea, since I figure that would seat more people comfortably, and be better for playing cards or other board games.

Anyone have any information that might be helpful to me or point me in the right direction?

Get a car interior heater that has thermostat and stantard wall plug. They usually have mounting points so you can attach it under the table.
>>

The plug is the same, but typically nonpolarized and ungrounded. The voltage is 110v instead of 120v which is probably within the tolerance range of most electrical stuff.

I'm pretty incompetent.
and most of the threads on DIY seem to be "help me do something", not actually "do it [myself]".

I'm surprised how difficult it was for that guy to set up though. RGB LEDs for plastic that's already colored? What a waste.
No wonder I was told to use something easier for my custom digital clock instead of a more complex system, they specifically said because it's hard to figure out the cause when something doesn't work.

Thanks god I'm not the only one who thinks Voyager is criminally bad.
Though I shouldn't be so harsh on these superficial details. If there's one thing Voyager had, it was superficiality. I haven't really studied Voyager's interior. It seemed inoffensive at the time when I subjected myself to that horrible show. I don't remember it looking so dark though.

>Thanks god I'm not the only one who thinks Voyager is criminally bad.
You're far from the only one. Most fans consider Voyager to be, at best, middling. It was famous for some episodes being outright terrible. Like what kind of writer creates a captain that has no coherent personality? What kind of producer gets handed terrible scripts, one after another, and just shrugs their shoulders, saying "I guess we're doing this shit"? How is it a prime-time tv-show for adults lets the rule-of-cool trump literally everything else, like continuity?

Then Star Trek: Enterprise appeared, and it was even worse. So Voyager has the dubious distinction of being bad but not even so bad it's the worst Trek.

Seriously if someone tells me their favorite Trek is Voyager I immediately think less of them as a person. Like if they told me they went to the bar, had a few drinks, then drove home, I'd think the same of them.

I like DS9 too. Best Trek. Except I love Avery Brooks. Sisko is the only captain that acts like a human fucking being. Kirk was a fat boy, Picard was a fucking ubermensch, Janeway had no discrete personality, and Archer was on a terrible show.

You know how sites like photobucket have rules about what you can upload? They need to hire people to actually enforce those rules. It's a minimum-wage job where you sit in cubicle hell all day, looking at pictures that people uploaded, like "hot or not," except it's "ban or not." And people upload some fucked up shit. After a few 40-hour weeks of gore, furry porn, and kiddy porn, these people need therapy for PTSD. Because it's a minimum-wage job, they can't afford therapy, don't get benefits, and if they quit they're homeless.

That's do-it-yourself PTSD.

Hey /diy/, I need solar panels for a project I'm doing at home... anyways, I will be running a few panels like in the picture for 2000 watts, and using micro inverters...
is there anyone who could tell me anything about getting this to run through a (?blank?, some inverter, anyone know what it is?) to convert into a normal and steady outlet output(us)?
It will run on its own grid and not connect to the house, but if anyone knows how to use the house electricity as the panels stop producing, that will be great
3 replies omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>812022
Remember that converting from DC(solar) to AC(plugins) loses power and efficiency. Always better just to step up/down the DC to run DC appliances(most common and overlooked are Cellphones and Laptops)
>>
>>812155
>Laptops

Most of the chargers for those will work fine on DC.

>step up/down

That also has losses.
>>
>>812155
>>812211
Those are called "car charger" adapters and you usually have to buy them separately.
>>
>>812022

yeah you'll need a microinverter for each ~250W panel (~$150/ea) and it will handle all the MPPT grid tie stuff. i think they're all 220V though. i don't know if you need a comm module though - will they work without one?
>>
>>812019
Grid hookups are stupid expensive. A 20 kWh LION battery pack from Tesla will be a lot less expensive. And it means you don't have to give a shit is the grid goes down in a storm.

>>812155
Just be careful to remember to use DC appliances. Those do exist, usually labelled as "camping supplies," but they're no where near as prolific as AC devices.

>>812211
The losses are far less severe. Remember the only reason AC exists is power distribution. If you're not getting power from a billion-dollar plant distributed to you and a million other assholes via high voltage transmission lines, you don't need AC. If your power generation and consumption happens all in your own home, DC is more efficient. Particularly when you consider the cost (in dollars, not just efficiency losses) of the DC-to-AC inverter.

So my USB game controller has started to fuck up because the wire has started to break where it joins the controller. So I cut out the problem part and I'm going to solder the wires back together.

I can do the actual soldering, but I don't know much about electrical stuff.

The fine gauge wire (blue arrows) is for providing power to the controller, right? Since it's all soldered to one point, there's no harm in soldering the bundle together at another point in the line, right?

I am making a VGA box similar to this:

So the guys usually connect all the grounds together? Isn't there like a RED/BLUE/GREEN-GROUND especially for each channel and such?

Also what does pin 20(VGA enable ID or something) and pin 24(Composite enable) do? Do I have to wire it or should I just leave it like that?

So /g/ was pretty useless...

I need to set up security cameras.
These would be for outdoors, but within range of our wifi. Can't really Ethernet to these devices, so they'd have to be either solar or battery powered. It's exceedingly hot and humid all the time too.

My budget isn't big, and these are just for home use, but I'd like to be able to read maybe a license plate from 30 feet away if just barely. Could justify doing maybe a grand.

Any knowledge/opinion someone who's installed their own security cams would care to share? Is there something I'm not considering? Are my constraints realistic?

i've installed a few for a couple of clients in the past, wont go into details due to HIPAA and related OPSEC constraints.

in all due honesty what you are expecting out of cameras will run you thousands if not tens of thousands.

ip cameras and a NVR on their own tagged VLAN should be perfectly fine if you have the infra for them.

Then go with power over ethernet and IP cameras. This way you can avoid cables all over the place.

>>812964
>in all due honesty what you are expecting out of cameras will run you thousands if not tens of thousands.
I've managed that with cheap Foscam Cameras and whatitsnameinenglish IR lights. OPs doesn't really need night vision capabilities in described scenario, so costs can be kept low.

http://www.amazon.com/Foscam-FI8905W-Outdoor-Wireless-Nightvision/dp/B003YUEF0E/ref=sr_1_15?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1431759031&sr=1-15&keywords=foscam
Quality of image is enough for reading licence plates up to twenty or so meters in the dark.
>>
idea: you don't necessarily need the cameras connected to the internet. If you get another wireless router, configure them to connect to a recording device over it (a PC could work, but you would want it on all the time and you would also probably want a dedicated network card running to the cameras' router), you can save the bandwidth hogging that they would do on your main connection.

Sup /diy/,
figured this would be the best place to ask.

I received a Uniden Bearcat Scanner and CB Radio this past Christmas and I intend to install them in my 06' Ford Focus ZX3.

I have already determined the best placement for them, installed two antennas, and ran all the wires for the antennas.

My biggest hurdle right now is determining the steps to take to get the devices powered. I have a friend who works for a local FD, has installed multiple radios in his car, and is giving me advice (and hopefully assisting me) installing it.

I know I need either a relay (to automatically power off the radio circuit) or a center-off toggle switch to change between (on when car running > OFF > battery override).

tl;dr, I have plans but am out of practice with my EE skills and need help.

>pic related is interior of car. Cables and ran to near map light (for scanner) and on dash (for CB). more detailed pics incoming.

What state do you live in? A lot of states it's illegal to have a scanner in your car if that scanner can receive police bands.

NYS, and It hits the 800mhz band, which my county PD uses but they also use digital trunk tracking which this scanner doesn't support.

>>812479
As a temporary install, fine, whatever. For something more permanent, get a hood/trunk mount bracket. Running cables through the door damages wires, can damage radios, and makes the door leak if it rains.
>>
>>812789
>A lot of states it's illegal to have a scanner in your car if that scanner can receive police bands.
welp, i'm fucked.
>Also why CB? You should get your license and get on the 144/440 bands.
Seconding ^^this^^. If you're going to make your car look like a porcupine, go all-out.
>>
Also, how much space do you have between the front seat(s) and dash? Is there a center console you can remove or stuff full of radios?

Overhead is inconvenient unless you can get it forward enough (not likely w/out remote mount). Not much support material to mount to either.

On the dash ... just no.

Relay off the accessory wire, or get a low-voltage/timer shutoff. Powerwerx has them for about $70.

Power cables on one side (battery side) of the vehicle, signal cables on the other.

Might see if you can cram one in the cubby below your stereo headunit.

Hi /diy/ I was wondering if any of you out there had a really easy to follow guide to brewing your own beer. I'm interested in this concept and I've been researching quite a bit however I'm still grey in alot of areas when it comes to this process. Thanks.
>>
Have made quite a few brews myself, and a few questions immediately get raised.... how much coin do you have and how much room do you have?

I will explain the cheapest beer I can think of that still tastes ok. It will get you by until you learn more.

You will need the following....

1. A 20 litre bucket that can be sealed airtight, and has a spigot (a tap) on the bottom. You can get these from hardware stores for 20 - 30 bucks. If you cant find one you may need to go to a home brew shop to get one butthey wont be as cheap. You need somthing that the whole lid can come off so you can clean it properly as you will be using it multiple times. Screw top lids are great, the press down type are fine too.

2. A decent scrubbing brush. Somthing with soft bristles. The type you find in a dustpan and brush set work well.

3. A airlock. Dont fuck around trying to use a glove of cheese cloth. These things are a few bucks each, just fucking buy one, and the washer for it too. Home brew shop or online for that.

4. A hydrometer. Again, its a few fucking dollars, 10 at most. Dont be an idiot and try to brew without one unless you want to make bottle bombs.
Make sure its a beer hydrometer not a spirits one.

6. Yeast. Yes, you can just use bread yeast if you want - I make a mean mead with bread yeast. Id recommend if your using LME, use the yeast that comes with it for now.

7. Sugar. Now, this is where people often get into arguments.... I myself use either dextrose or a pre packaged mix, like coopers brew enhancer. In fact if you can for ease, use a tin of coopers pale ale and a packet of coopers BE2.

It makes a good beer and its not expensive. If you want to just use sugar, use 1.5kg of plain white, or 1kg of white and .5 kg of raw/brown.

8. Starsan. You will need it. Again just fucking buy it, cos if your beer goes bad you will regret it.
Instructions to follow.
>>
First of all, drill a hole through the lid. Generally, most airlocks are around 8mm so drill an 8mm hole. Clean it up and fit the washer and the airlock. If its a snug fit your good.

Now, get your bucket and clean it. You can get brewers soap to do this if you want but for the fist time, a teaspoon full of dishwashing soap to a liter of water will be fine. Using a sponge, clean every inch of that bucket and the lid. Do the same with the air lock.

Also forgot to mention above, you need a decent stirrer... your kitchen ones will probably do for now, if you dont have one buy one from the home brew shop.

Rinse it all out with warm water.

Next, fill a sink with hot water. take the plastic cover off the top of your tin of LME and put the yeast and instructions to the side. Some tins have the instructions on the back of the tin wrapper. Soak it all in the hot water for a good 15 minutes.

While you are waiting, make up your starsan in the bucket. Follow the instructions on how much to use. I put all the stuff I will be using in the bucket. (Stirring spoon, air lock, rubber seals etc. using your hands, rub some into where the lid seals the bucket. Seal the bucket up with your stuff inside (stirrer and airlock)

Cover the airlock hole and give it all a good shake. Sit the tap on the bucket over your sink and drain it all out. DO NOT RINSE IT OUT. Starsan is completely safe and has no effect on the flavor of the beer in any way.

Next, put full kettle on to boil. Remove the lid from the bucket and assemble your airlock. Fit the airlock and sit it on your benchtop, airlock facing down.

Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>
That should be 19l of luke warm liquid now.

Make up a small batch of starsan in a spray bottle. Spray your hydrometer and set it in the mix. It should read abour 1.040 or therebouts.

Take it out and give it a good rinse.

add your yeast. There is no need to prep it, those bastards can fight for themselves. If you want give em a little stir to send em on their way.

Spray the lid with some starsan, Put the lid on, and then fill your airlock. Depending on what type of airlock you get will determine how you do this.

if its an s type, we want a gap at the top part of the s, if its the cup type, we want it to be between the fill lines.

We want to keep it somewhere that sits around 18 - 23 degrees celcius. I have brewed in temps above 30 degrees... its not recommended. Dont go below 15. It will cause the yeast to stop growing.

Wait 3 weeks. Do not touch it. Do not shake it. Do not open it. You can remove the hydrometer to clean and refill every few days and THEN you can have a smell.

Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>
Once you have fitted this, you now are ready to bottle. You now want to sit the wand in the first bottle and fill each bottle to the brim. When you remove the wand the level will drop creating an even headspace. Cap the bottle, then continue with the rest.

When you are finished, place them somewhere dark, ie inside a cardboard box. Sunlight will fuck your beer up quicksnap, making it taste like a skunk took a piss in it. Put somewhere cool, preferably round the same temp as what you fermented at. Now clean all your gear and sit somewhere it can thoroughly dry

Wait at least a month. This will allow the little yeasties time to convert the sugar into CO2 to carbonate the beer.
There will be sediment at the bottom of the bottles. This is just yeast and you will learn to pour without disturbing it.

I hope you give it a go and that the last hour of typing has not been for nothing. Please let me know how it goes!

Damn, $160 for a drill and an impact driver. I wish tools were that cheap here in Europe. It's either the affordable Black & Decker garbage, the overpriced green Bosch shit or paying out the ass for a decent Makita. DeWalt, Porter Cable and Milwaukee don't do business here apparently.

Not sarcasm. I'm just not a typical chan NEET. I build houses, do electrical work, and sometimes even supervise. But that's normal in /diy/. God loves a working man, and so do I.
