Kennesaw State Student Told That Waiting For An Advisor Is 'Harassing'

Posted: Updated:
Kennesaw State University is looking into a video circulating online of a staff member threatening to call security on a student who said he was waiting to speak with an advisor.
Kevin Bruce, a student at Kennesaw State in Georgia, posted video Wednesday night of his interaction with Abby Dawson, Director of Advising and Internships in the Exercise Science and Sport Management department of the public university. Bruce tweeted at several local TV stations trying to bring attention to his video; his tweet had received more than 5,000 retweets by Thursday afternoon.
"I'm not harassing no one," Bruce is heard saying in the video. "You are," Dawson responds.
A moment later Bruce states, "I'm just waiting to talk to someone, I'm not harassing no one though."
"Sitting here until someone's available, is harassing them," Dawson replies. "That's not harassing them," Bruce slowly responds, to which she says, "It is. Would you like me to call campus security?"
Bruce tweeted later that other efforts to set up a meeting haven't worked out -- in one instance, his appointment was canceled. Bruce also said he has been trying to speak with another advisor and wanted to avoid a meeting with Dawson because he found her unhelpful in the past.
In a screenshot of an email Bruce posted to Twitter, Dawson responded to his questions about class schedules, "You will need to refer to the information I have given you previously. You have all the resources you need to quickly find the answer to this question."
Staff from the department where Dawson works did not respond to a request for comment. The Kennesaw State media affairs office said university officials "are working with a student to review his concerns regarding the behavior of an academic advisor in the WellStar College of Health and Human Services."
Bruce's video sparked the hashtag #ItsBiggerThanKSU, and several other students started tweeting about their own experiences with Dawson and the ESSM department, many posting screenshots of emails in their tweets.
One student, Amber Wann, said she had difficulty getting into a couple classes she needed and was worried she would fall behind. When she asked if there was a way to avoid the waitlist, Dawson replied in an email, "I will not continue to answer the same question." Wann tweeted a screenshot of the exchange:
Another student, Austin Smith, tweeted about an encounter he had with Dawson during the advisory office's posted open hours. Smith said that he arrived about halfway through the time-slot, but Dawson told him they had finished early and were moving on to a workshop.
The Huffington Post reached out to the students tweeting about advising problems at Kennesaw State, but had not received any responses at the time of publication.
Several other students have used the hashtag to complain about the treatment they've received at the office.

I run an advising center. If one of my advisors acted like this to a student, I would fire them.

This comment makes me feel SO relieved. I was wondering if maybe things had changed for the worse since I was in college. I HOPE she is "asked to leave" her job, but I have a sneaking suspicion that nothing will happen to her. Maybe she'll have to attend anger management therapy...?

Be honest. Admit you refuse to do your job and look for another one. Hopefully, that will be mandatory for you very soon.

How is she refusing to do her job? Its a desk person, they want the guy to sign the form, he refuses to. People that man the desks are pretty much never the advisors.

I'm an exercise science major at KSU and I've been waiting over a month for an advisement appointment. She isn't racist, they are just terrible at their jobs. I am a junior and STILL can't get the classes I need to graduate which has turned a 4 year degree into a 5+ year degree, with little to no help from the advisors. I have been following all their 'rules' and attended their 'group counseling' which has been useless. I'm sorry to say this, but playing fair and following the rules gets you no where at this school. All ive seen is that the fees have continued to go up, while the quality of service has plummeted. It is terrible management on KSU's part and something needs to be done.

I don't think anyone claimed racism...seeing as how a lot of white students also complained

John Lee The Facebook ant trail that is leading most people to this article says "KSU staffer’s behavior spurs racism complaints" and most of the articles say "black student" in the title. HufPo has one of the few articles that don't have "racism" or "black" in the title, although they did plant this in the "black voices" category. I don't really feel like this is racist, just someone who doesn't appear to be good at their job. I'd like to hear her story, but with so many people complaining about the same office and the same person it seems pretty evident she has a history of poor work skills.

There are a lot of other news posts who are spinning the story in that way. Just stating my own terrible experiences with them.

They took her face down quick - http://www.kennesaw.edu/chhs/essm/faculty.html

I am a former academic advisor.... our job was to, I dunno - ADVISE STUDENTS! The 30 seconds she took being rude could have been used to help. If you don't like the job then get out.
        • Jack Montgomery
So if you had a system where students were told to make appointments for designated times and a student came in demanding to see you that would be okay with you? How about this, the adviser you are bashing for not seeing this student was likely seeing a student who follows the rules and made an appointment. Do you expect her to tell the other student, sorry I have to cut our session short even though you drove an hour to get here because another student is acting like a child and demands I see him.

Sick of people like you acting high and mighty when in fact you likely would have done the same "As a former academic adviser".

Jack Montgomery The kid's previous appt. was cancelled for an unknown reason, and he was told that another counselor would be available in an hour, and he responded that he would just wait. You should actually read his account before you make comments like the foregoing.

Jack Montgomery how was he demanding? End of the semester, students need to see advisers more and the job can be stressful, with that being said it was her job to advise. How was he acting like a child as well? Acting high and mighty, no, just hoping that people would treat other people as decent human beings, you might try that sometime, or continue to bash me. Either way I am happy! She seems to have a track record of treating students like trash. Higher ed may not be her calling. And no, my students still contact me for advice because if it were not for them I would have not had a job. She may want to be a bit more grateful and you. Godbless you dude! :)

I am currently transferring to KSU to finish out my senior year closer to home and I can say on multiple occasions, this department has been very unhelpful and unprofessional to me personally. Coming from a smaller school, I gave them the benefit of the doubt for having to deal with so many students a day. First, I signed up for an appointment online, confirming with her through email that this would be helpful for my situation. Getting there, it was a "group advising" for already enrolled students and did not apply to me at all. When I went to talk to her after, she told me that "I had to make an appontment through email and that was the only way to do so" wven though thats what I did! Discouraged, I still sent them many questions about my transfer, nervious that I won't graduate on time, but all I received was an unhelpful ema...ils saying how my questions were pointless and referred me to Degree Works, where I was only asking about how my credits transfer. She basically told me I have to figure it out myself on Degree works. Still giving the benefit of the doubt to the department, I did the research myself. Finally, after a long day of orientation few weeks later, I asked Abby Dawson at the advising session of Exercise Science based off of everything I researched in degree works, my transcript, etc, I asked "Am I okay to Graduate on time?". She replied with accusing me of having someone "sending my emails for me" because she clearly answered all those questions already. It was in front of everyone too and it made me so upset. I felt so stupid for just asking a question, but then I realized that this is ADVISING and I shouldn't feel dumb about not knowing about their system especially coming from a smaller school. I hope no one else has to go through what I went through, I love Exercise Science and no one should be pushed away by it because of bad advising. See More

She needs to be fired. I've met many like her, but at my school they existed more in the financial aid department. You are paid (coincidentally, by the students) to help students. If you can't do it, leave. The student claimed to have tried many times to set up an appointment to no avail. I cannot believe a university would not even allow students to make appointments in the office when they come to the department. She needs to be fired, and they need to change their policies.

Edit: If waiting for someone to be available is harassment why are there chairs in the department that are not specifically for those working there?

My sister was having the same problem with her financial advisor at her college. I told her to ask to see the her advisor's boss, next thing you know they found her a scholarship. I told her that asking to see their manager works every time.

KSU is notorious for intentionally hiding the higher-ups' contact information. It is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to find the information of someone "over the head" of anyone unless they give it to you themselves - and of course, if it will get them in trouble (and why else would anyone need to go over someone's head?), why would they volunteer that information? It is an awful awful system with no accountability whatsoever.
