My grandparents are not obese, they are there because they are old and can't take care of themselves and have dementia, just like all the other people there. All of them are old, only some are fat, so this argument you are conjuring about fat people in nursing homes is simply bullshit. Once you are past 60 you are rolling the dice, there are all sorts of conditions that land you in that home. Good for that 80yo dude you ran with, but he is an outlier. As a wise man once said, "You see plenty of young runners people in the streets. And plenty of old people. But you rarely see old runners." Did you expect to see tons of old fat people at your marathon? There is nothing wrong with an old, healthy person having other hobbies, reading, gardening, etc. Of course that one old dude is going to seem like an inspiration. Remember that no how much you respect that old man, he is still going to end up with a nurse wiping his ass, don't pretend like running a marathon now and then is going to save anyone from that fate.

There's a difference between becoming obese at an old age, and growing up obese for most of your life. Just because you see seniors that are overweight, doesn't mean they were that way growing up. Take these seniors, for instance:

They are most likely overweight by BMI standards, however they are WW2 veterans who were in fighting shape during the war. They gain weight as they grow older because their metabolism isn't what it was before and they lose mobility. However, their bodies didn't suffer from decades of obesity when they were growing up.

There is a difference. I would be willing to bet that the overweight seniors you see "twice a week, literally" had a much healthier weight when they were young.

It's a complicated issue. On the one hand those statistics I posted are probably at least partially based on wealthier people being less likely to be obese in the first place. On the other hand, there are many mitigating effects that wealth could have on his life expectancy besides getting good advice.

He(assumedly) has less stress in his life than someone the same weight living paycheck to paycheck or struggling to pay off their mortgage. If he ends up needing bypass surgery or a heart transplant, he's more likely to get it done quickly and with better doctors than a person with less money. During the recuperation time, he again would benefit from reduced stress due to his not needing to worry about how he'll pay for it or when he could get back to work. Finally he can afford the best and latest medications to regulate cholesterol and other health risks.

Add in the fact that we don't know what his family health history is, and we have a whole host of other factors unaccounted for.

Basically what I'm saying is that it's a bad idea to base a prediction for an individual off of only variable. A single variable can be great at predicting demographic trends, but useless when looking at an individual. GRRM might have died while I was writing this, or he might live another thirty years. His weight absolutely puts him in a very high risk demographic, but it's also not the only thing about him that affects his life expectancy.

GRRM was a pretty average professional writer for most of his life; received critical acclaim, published several times, able to make a living (for the most part, with supplemental income from editing, etc.), but not really becoming wealthy until ASOIAF became very popular.

A single variable can be great at predicting demographic trends, but useless when looking at an individual.

True. That being said, GRRM is well past morbid obesity. It's incredibly unlikely that his weight hasn't had a significant impact on his overall health to this point in his life, and even with the best medicine available, he's not willing/able to change his lifestyle, which means he's probably living on borrowed time as it is.

Extreme obesity isn't a guarantee of an early demise; it's about as solid an indicator as we have, though.

Don't even get into it with people like him. First off, he's trolling. Secondly, fat-haters are people that hold a higher opinion of themselves and think they are superior to others. No matter what you say to them, they are better than you in their minds. Thirdly, what he says does not matter one bit. He's spewing words that have absolutely zero effect on your life or anyone else's. His opinion counts about as much as the opinion of the pile of dog shit in my back yard. Other people may disagree with me and hate my comment. So be it. The absolute worst they can do is hit the downvote button. Big deal. They are taking away imaginary internet points that also mean nothing. At the end of the day, nothing is accomplished and we continue on happily with our lives and they continue on miserably with theirs. Remember this next time you want to argue with someone on reddit: their opinions don't matter, karma doesn't matter. They say the things they say because they may feel inadequate about some sort of shortcomings that they may have and taking it out anonymously on a complete stranger who may be thousands of miles away is the only way they can maybe feel better about themselves. It's really not even worth it to respond. Ignoring them is the best plan of action. Have a wonderful day!

The stages are based on traditional measurements such as body mass index (BMI). A BMI of 30 or above is termed obese.

The system also takes into account clinical measurements such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

Those obese people in stages 2 or 3, who had moderate to severe co-existing medical conditions, were 1.6 to 1.7 times as likely as the normal-weight people to die from any cause during the follow-up.

They were more than two times as likely to die of a cardiovascular cause.

So what this says, is that as soon as you are diagnosed with an obesity-related illness (which is up to 2x as likely in the obese population as the "normal weight" folks), you are no longer considered a part of the study.

So. If you make it 16 years as an obese person, don't get diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, don't have cardiovascular disease, and don't get other weight-related/"coexisting" medical issues, you're not expected to die any more than a normal weight person.

Which is not really a shocker; we all know that it's the complications from obesity (i.e. diabetes, cardiovascular disease, illness, etc.) that typically kill you early.

Thus, if you're lucky enough to be obese without complications, and if you are in stage 0 or 1 obesity (which basically means you're at a BMI of 35 or below), you're not significantly more likely to die of heart disease than a normal weight person.
