People said this in the original threads and got downvoted because everyone was enjoying how great a gesture it was.

The obvious point was that there were no sources, everyone was pointing to "So Foot" magazine which didn't have a source itself, and the biggest reason it was clearly bollocks - players don't announce how much they give to charity and parade it around as PR stunts, and charities don't go around telling everyone who donated what.

He's obviously a charitable guy, and I wouldn't be surprised if he did make a donation when he put the appeal on his FB page, but we'll never know how much, and why should we?

The same thing happened last week when the bullshit story about Pacquiao donating half his earnings to charity got upvoted to the front page based on a off the cuff joke from his crony king of bs promoter Bob Arum.

He's embroiled in a tax dispute where's he's being chased for $33 million, Arum and his enormous team supposedly squeezing his account for all it's worth and he's going to give half his 120/130$ million winnings away. Sure ok mate.

It's also quite fun to see how everyone goes apeshit about sources when it's something they don't want to happen. No source and it's something they want to happen, it's got plus 4k votes.

Only the early such comments were downvoted, when Nepali users began corroborating that no such thing is happening, the comments got upvotes but by then the balance was established and these nuanced comments were in the middle of the comment thread not at the top.

It might not be ideal but its far better than many a mainstream news sources reporting BS and then having a correction at some place where no one can see it.

i'm not sure of when the tabloid went out with the apology etc since i never really cared about the story, but is it not possible that the handshake incident took place shortly after the story broke and wayne simply choose to believe it?

i'd say a tabloid being taken to court (or whatever equivalent place where such decisions are made in UK) and made to apologize and retract the story is stronger evidence that a rumor is false than a lot of other "rumors" that people consider false on here.

This is all I came up with. It's still being reported as true after those apologies were printed though and nearly every Google result says it happened, although most pre-date the apology. At any rate I've spent way more time looking into this then I ever wanted. If someone has a definitive account that would settle it.

    A lot of clubs in spain at the begging were founded using english names, like "Madrid Football Club", "Football Club Barcelona" and the boths "Athletic Club" from Bilbao and Madrid. In the franquist regime they were forced to change their names to a spanish one. Years laters a few of them changed it back, like Bilbao, and some didn't. Barcelona changed the "Club de Futbol" to "Fútbol Club"
