The stress of the incident has caused Alison's asthma and eczema to flare up, forcing her to leave college. Her grades have slipped from regular As to barely markable work. Peter has also quit education and faces being branded a sex offender.

This is fucked up

The pictures that Alison and Peter took - around a dozen of them - were only discovered following a series of "unfortunate and unrelated events" that meant the police got hold of her mobile phone.

There seems to be a bit more to this story that isn't being told.

It says CPS agents saw it. Could be something related to them as the cause? Or probably some other smaller illegal action that leads to a confiscated phone

The most rage-inducing part is that in most of these the girl is also charged since they were the ones creating, storing, and distributing the "child pornography"

The cops are being asshats if they're picking who to charge.

everyone involved is a fucking psychopath for even thinking about charging either of them. jesus christ this legal system is fucked.

You can be charged with child porn if you have a lewd pic of yourself on your phone, and you're underage.

If I'm recalling correctly.

"Also not her real name."

Yeah I didn't think Peter was her name anyway.

Unpopular opinion: she should've just waited to send them until she was 18? Or whatever? If they can have sex, why is she sending them? The fact of the matter is if the pictures ever got leaked somewhere on the Internet like on 4chan or something, a lot of people could be charged with child pornography. What went down doesn't seem right, her having to leave college and everything, and it probably was blew up way too much... but it's one of those cases where if you do nothing, what's to stop 50 year olds from having nude pics of 17 year old girls (or boys for that matter) all over?

Just because they "consent" doesn't mean the pic wouldn't get released to the public somehow, or that they don't save the pictures, or that they'll always keep the pictures private and secure in the future.

On top of that, if they're calling to change the law, they'll run into a million problems. I think it mostly has to do with the Internet. The age for being in pornography is 18, generally everywhere. There's no way they would lower the age for the law to 16 or 17 just so that kids can send nudes to each other.

TL;DR I agree the punishment was way too harsh, but it would be pointless to change the law just so teenagers can have an easier time sending nudes and it would likely never happen. Unless the law changes everywhere, it really is kind of in place to help people from exploiting minors.

Is there an article that doesn't stop after the first sentence? Can you please link it?

I refuse to sign up for anything just to read a newspaper.
