Your love for dogs has nothing to do with the facts.
This is like taking a 2 year old climbing. Yeah, they'll survive. Is it good for them? Absolutely not.
Goldens are already prone to bad joints and hips, and to take a puppy that was just old enough to leave its mother out for I'm assuming over an hour of walking and climbing...that's just bad pet ownership. I'm sorry, but google that shit before you do it.
[–]Courtbird 34 points35 points36 points  (3 children)
Dude, puppies play for hours at a time. When they are too tired they tend to tucker out and refuse to move. I think there's a huge different between taking a dog for a run and a most likely leisurely climb.
[–]moriya 12 points13 points14 points  (2 children)
I'm kind of cracking up at all these references to the puppy going climbing, as if they put him in a little harness on a multi-pitch route. The humans are climbing, the puppy just went on a hike to the crag and (likely) tired himself out running around while they were climbing.
We're talking about rock climbing, people - see the ropes in the picture?
[–]weirdhobo 3 points4 points5 points  (0 children)
That puppy probably just crushed a 5.14. I'd be tired too.
[–]Courtbird 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
I didn't even notice that :P Either way, it's ridiculous that the initial response to people taking their pups out is that they are terrible.
[–]IamRooseBoltonAMA 25 points26 points27 points  (13 children)
It is literally nothing like taking a two-year old climbing. Humans and dogs are not comparable, and dogs are meant to be outside playing and exercising. Your over-protective, helicopter-parent mentality represents so much that is wrong with our society today.
[–]barkingfree comment score below threshold-23 points-22 points-21 points  (5 children)
For being completely obsessed with facts and science, reddit is weirdly critical when it comes to "over-parenting" cute animals.
A 10wk old puppy is a baby. Period. Maybe thousands of years ago puppies could hike 10+ miles a day, but most dogs today are bred to be pets and companions for humans. Golden retrievers are criminally overbred, to the point where a dog might not be able to make it up the stairs by the time they're 6. Shit like this is a big fucking deal, it isn't OP having a beer bottle in the background and people accusing them of being dirty alcoholics.
The irony here is, I'm actually not that overprotective of my dog. She eats shit all the time off the ground, and it doesn't bother me, because I know she's got a strong stomach. But, she is a mix of two breeds that are really prone to hip dysplasia, so I try to put a little extra thought into our activities. No, I don't harass my parents when they watch her about not letting her run too fast or walk on hard surfaces, I just try to stay away from making her run up and down my stairs 100 times every day.
OP, I do want to apologize if I upset you, I was a little rash in my original response. However, my thoughts still stand - climbing is an inappropriate activity for a 10wk old puppy.
EDIT: 3 downvotes in 6 minutes, a new record! Someone please tell me how I'm incorrect, I'd like to know where I screwed up.
[–]IamRooseBoltonAMA 7 points8 points9 points  (3 children)
Oh my god, just shut the fuck up. This is CLEARLY about you feeling smug and self-righteous rather than any real concern for the dog.
[–]barkingfree comment score below threshold-7 points-6 points-5 points  (2 children)
Wow, that was incredibly rude. You seem to have a lot of preconceived notions about me, none of which are true.
I actually really love talking about dogs, and this stuff is really interesting to me. If someone had said, "That's not true, and here's why" instead of just calling me out for being mean to the cute wittle puppy, then I would have fucking loved to talk about it. I'm totally willing to admit fault when I'm wrong, and I have. Frequently. I apologized to OP because I felt bad for being harsh, I was out of line with my tone. My goal was to inform them of the potential serious consequences of taking a young dog out for strenuous activity, but I realized I was hurting more than helping. That doesn't change the facts, but my tone was inappropriate.
[–]IamRooseBoltonAMA 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
Jesus fucking Christ, quit it with the insufferable martyrdom and passive-aggressive bull shit.
that doesn't change the facts
You keep talking about "facts" yet you never provide any sources. Not to mention, OP mentioned he/she carried the little bugger over big rocks and strenuous walks.
[–]barkingfree 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Sorry, you're right, I'm going about this all wrong.
Fuck you, you ignorant trash, and read a fucking book about your damn dog. Google isn't fucking hard, you entitled cunt!
Better?
[–]lBioTech 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Lol at the apology. I'm pretty sure OP doesn't give a flying fuck what an uptight cunt on reddit has to say.

Because humans are not animals?

So does your inability to choose the correct way of spelling 'you're'.
[–]IamRooseBoltonAMA 7 points8 points9 points  (4 children)
Ah yes, the internet pedant. He thinks correcting people's mistakes is a substitute for actual intelligence.
If you're going to correct someone's mistakes, by the way, make sure you have not made any yourself. The period goes inside the quotation marks, dipshit.
[–]darkjakx 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
he also miss corrected, as the person he You're is the wrong word for the sentence he was trying to correct
[–]MissBelly -1 points0 points1 point  (2 children)
Actually the period only goes inside the quotes if the contents of the quotes are a complete sentence on their own. So, actually, he was correct in that regard.
[–]IamRooseBoltonAMA 1 point2 points3 points  (1 child)
That is not true.
[–]MissBelly 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
The punctuation within quotes should be the terminal punctuation of the contents of the quoted text, not the sentence that contains it.
As an example: Then he looked into her eyes and asked, "Will you marry me?".
The quoted bit is a question, but the sentence that contains it is a statement. You wouldn't shove the period in the quotes after the question mark too, would you?
[–]ShiggityShane 14 points15 points16 points  (3 children)
I'm sorry, but google that shit before you do it.
Remember kids, google is the all knowing life guide.
[–]Flavahbeast 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
I googled it and it brought me to this thread, what do i do now :[
[–]Thorbinator 1 point2 points3 points  (1 child)
You jest, but it kind of is. At the very least it links you to reliable and unreliable sources. And heck, they're working on that too!
[–]ShiggityShane 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Well damn, thats actually pretty impressive. I use google for a lot of things too, i just don't live and die by it. Sometimes experience is the best way to learn, imo.
[–]Thedogsthatgowoof comment score below threshold-14 points-13 points-12 points  (2 children)
Yes, because the internet has all the answers of how to be a responsible pet owner....
Edit: And you are assuming that the pup walked for over an hour or was strained. Enjoy the cute photo, take care of your own dogs, and let this dude enjoy his.
[–]arabchic -3 points-2 points-1 points  (0 children)
I'd rather come off as high and mighty than risk someone not being extra careful if they bring a dog this young on the trail. You're right that they'll probably be fine but it really is very important not to overexercise puppies as it can damage their joints, especially goldens.
[–]qui1 -1 points0 points1 point  (0 children)
Your original post is entirely based on assumptions and your love for dogs lol. It's actually really funny because the guy that replied to you gave you facts, but you're just trying it discredit him. "Enjoy the cute photo, take care of your own dogs, and let this dude enjoy his." I guess you think the world would be a better place if people didn't inform the uninformed.
