I love that people are downvoting the thread so others won't see it, or something?

[–]theedoorNatty Police Police [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

if it's downvoted then you guys can't ban the videos, that's how le reddit democracy works

The real fun will come when the next broscience video is released.

Have you ever tried not being a douchebag? I hear millions of people are doing it now and enjoying life.

[–]Red_StevensFootball [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Oh no we can't comment the same exact quotes we just heard in the video anymore. And how will a fitness sub survive without hearing the super original:

Dom really outdid himself this time!!!

Dom should have a TV Show

This is just a comedy show but he really says some deep shit

[–]phrakture❇ Special Snowflake ❇[S] [スコア非表示]  (3子コメント)

What Broscience video is this quote from?

Next week/month's semi regular posting where Dom finds /r/fitness and at the same time realizes even in full douchebag mode he can't compete with you.

[–]phrakture❇ Special Snowflake ❇[S] [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Dom is just an actor. I'm the real deal.

Honestly, I just stopped clicking on that thread. It was fine the first few times, but it just feels too played out like another user expressed.

Doesn't affect me either way.

The threads always seemed pointless. I appreciate bringing attention to the fact that there's a new video out, as I might have missed that. But the threads in it are always just reciting lines from the video for dat dere karma. Or how Dom always laces truth in his satire. It's just the same stuff every time. I support this decision

So many conversations are the same thing repeated over and over again.

Sports, for example. I'm perhaps biased in that I never really got it, but every discussion of a sports game is just replays of what happened, commentary on how a ball was moved in some important direction, and such. It's just the same stuff every time, but people enjoy the camaraderie.

I think sports provide a chance for deeper analysis and such. You can recap the game with friends, but then the next day you can discuss what those events mean for the team, other teams as a result, etc. however, the bioscience threads are always just the recap. I've never seen further analysis and such come of it.

The problem is that they are using this video as a catalyst for the ban when in all actuality this video has sparked the most true discussion of any of the previous videos.

It sparked true discussion, yes. But it also sparked a lot of hateful comments. Hateful comments being in one of the top threads is not good for the overall reputation of the sub. And then there's the idea that since this one did spark discussion, would they just do it with the next one anyway? What's the point of delaying the inevitable?

[–]MogwoggleSassiest Moderator/Sportsballer [

If you want to shit on women, there are plenty of other subs to do that in.

But if you want to shit on crossfitters we're the sub for you? Im not advocating their behavior. Im saying you punish the individual and not the community based on the individuals actions and not the community's...

[–]MogwoggleSassiest Moderator/Sportsballer [

Please use the report button when you see shitting on any type of working out, as the "Posts specifically made to make fun of others" was added to Rule #1 to combat that.

I've seen a huge decline in the behaviour you're talking about since I've been a mod, and I thought we were doing well.

But if you want to shit on crossfitters we're the sub for you?

No, not at all.

This line from Rule 1 was specifically crafted with Crossfit in mind:

Similarly, threads and comments that exist solely for the purpose of ridiculing other people are not allowed. This includes making fun of other people's exercise choices, performances, and physiques.

If you've seen crossfit bashing posts that we've missed, please use the report button and we'll remove them.

[–]phrakture❇ Special Snowflake ❇[S] [スコア非表示]  (4子コメント)

But if you want to shit on crossfitters we're the sub for you?

No, you can go to /r/crossfitcaptions for that.

Rule #1 includes the following line that precludes "making fun of crossfit".

Similarly, threads and comments that exist solely for the purpose of ridiculing other people are not allowed. This includes making fun of other people's exercise choices, performances, and physiques.

If you see violations of this rule, please use the Report button to let us know.

It's not the thread that breaks the rule, it's the comments by the redditors. You can visit a number of threads on this subreddit in a given week and find a ton of rule violations. Im just failing to see how the content of the video broke a rule, and not the users themselves.

[–]phrakture❇ Special Snowflake ❇[S] [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

You can visit a number of threads on this subreddit in a given week and find a ton of rule violations

Please use the report function of reddit if you see these.

That said, other people violating the rules does not mean everyone can violate them. You can't get out of a speeding ticket by saying you saw other people speeding.

Im just failing to see how the content of the video broke a rule

From the rules:

2.1 Minimum content

/r/Fitness is limited to self-posts only. There are many reasons for this, but the most important is seeding quality discussion. As such, all posts require a minimum amount of content in the text box to clarify your question or provide context to a linked article.

[...]

Posting off-site links

When posting to share links to resources outside /r/Fitness, your post must contain the the following:

  • Summarize the content. Give readers a reason to read the article or watch the video. Give a rundown of what to expect and what the takeaways should be. For some high quality examples of this, check out the following posts. 1, 2, 3, 4
  • Start a discussion Talk about why you want to share your link, ask questions it raised for you, or offer your critique.

In other words, give us a quick rundown of why we should click your link and engage the community.

2.2 Posts must be specific to fitness

Just because something is tangentially related to the gym or happened during a run does not mean it is about fitness. While /r/Fitness may be the best, most-focused subset of people to ask, that does not mean your post is on topic or is allowed here. This subreddit is about health and fitness goals, and how we obtain them.

I have read the rules. Please tell me which one the video is breaking. You allow posts from off-site, and the videos are specific to fitness.

The video was about not letting other people's view or value of you devalue the work you have or could do in the future. Seems like the same thing we tell every person who has issues with going to a gym for the first time.

Again, I'd like to clarify I'm not defending these people and the comments they made. I just think it's a bit weird to ban the building of walls because some person painted some graffitti on one.

how exactly do broscience videos not promote discussion? how are they not specific to fitness? i'm not trying to start an argument but i really don't see how one can objectively say that

100s of comments repeating the same lines from the video is not a 'discussion'.

Kurt COBAIN!, Lol, I lost it

Well aside from the fact that he sometimes mentions something fitness related, pretty much all of the content is just one long over done joke. That leads less to conversation and more to high fives and repeating one liners from the video.

I'm curious as to how the BroScience videos don't apply to Rule #2. They are always about fitness is some aspect, and they usually have the most comments of any threads (outside of AMAs). Then the first one that actually starts some real discussion gets posted and because of some people breaking Rule 1 (which has nothing to do with the video itself imo) they are no longer allowed.

Broscience videos didn't cause misogyny, these people were already that way. If you plan to ban topics based on the comments that may or may not take place in the disucssions about those topics you're on quite a slippery slope.

Interesting that there is a rant thread every week that devolves into talk about people's personal experiences in the gym and has little to zero to do with fitness.

        [–]phrakture❇ Special Snowflake ❇[S] [スコア非表示]  (2子コメント)

You still didn't click and read the rule. Literally right underneath the part he quoted, it says:

Similarly, do not post 'your story' or stories that happened to you, nuances of your gym experience, random things you see other people do, or simple self-congratulations. This sub is not a place to tease out your social dilemmas. If you feel you must share these with fittit, please use the weekly Rant Wednesday, Gym Story Saturday or Victory Sunday threads.

        [–]MogwoggleSassiest Moderator/Sportsballer [

I skimmed it. I think I understand it.

Can you repeat the part about the whole thing again because I didn't read it.

This thread appears to be in violation. "Nuances of your gym experience, random things you see other people do."

The rant thread exists precisely to give people that outlet. Instead of dozens of those useless posts they are corralled into one that people can more easily ignore/avoid.

Just like Physique Phriday gives people an outlet to post pics of themselves without having to meet Rule 4. Same with Victory Sunday and well, all the weekly posts.

It has the potential to back-fire. People dislike being told what they can't do. They will see this as mods abusing their power and trying to silence them.

So some people will definitely unsubscribe. Will it be enough to matter? Who knows.

        [–]phrakture❇ Special Snowflake ❇[S] [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

So some people will definitely unsubscribe.

If people unsubscribe because they don't see regular notifications of a new youtube video, I highly doubt they contributed anything meaningful to the subreddit to begin with.

The mods have been fervent since day one that they want a quality sub that focuses on fitness without falling to a meme-focused hole. They frequently make decisions that piss off a crowd of people that just want easy karma posts and low content discussion and every time there's a backlash.

The reality is that the people who want a /r/Fitness as a meme board aren't really all that welcome here. Its fine that they'll make posts about how nazi the mods are, or how they're abusing power etc. but its not like this behaviour has changed. Phrak and others have always been nazis, and despite that they managed to grow this place large enough to be offered a spot as a default on reddit.

No, it won't. Anyone who unsubscribes because they can't dump a link to a YouTube video and repeat quotes from it for the next 10 hours will not be missed.

It seems to happen eventually in all the well moderated popular subs. The mods will ban something that they think goes against the nature of the sub but has proven to be very popular. It was tolerable in the past because the community was small enough that no harm was being done. Eventually the sub gets big enough that too many trolls join the party and the mods kill it.

Its a tough spot and it can divide a community. I know that I enjoy the ridiculousness of the Broscience videos and the discussion that happens after so I figured you would get a lot of back lash. I hope their is a way we can keep Broscience around, but its your call.
