For some historical context: Stalin did try to forge allegiance with the West. Even went as far as to offer one million soviet troops for defending Europe against fascism, after UK and France had already conceded Austria to the Nazis. The West snubbed him so he tried to buy some time by signing a non-agression treaty with Nazi Germany, that both parties knew was mostly useless.

To give you an idea of how friendly Molotov was with the Nazis, he refused to eat anything that was served to him without a taster eating it first to make sure it wasn't poisoned. Not exactly something you'd do with a friendly ally.

For the record I don't think it is defensible, because it turned out to be completely useless, but I think with the historical context you can understand why Stalin did it.

What? It's well known that Stalin wanted to be butt buddies with Hitler. To the point he refused to acknowledge that his man crush was attacking him when the war started.

Hey Ukrainian propagandist living in the west "putupyourdukes". Here is a fact, which I hope your two brain cells can comprehend.

Stalin never met Hitler, he never made contact with him even when he tried during war. Both men disliked each other. Learn some history my dear retarded Ukrainian.

P.S. What does Ukraine mean btw?

You really should read some history. Stalin's advisors told him Hitler was going to invade, and he refused to even acknowledge the possibility even after Germany attacked.

"Contrary to official Soviet history, for instance, Stalin assured Germany in 1939 that the USSR would provide military support for Germany, not merely pledge not to oppose Germany."

After the wall fell, we learned all the real history. Russian's can't lie about their support for Nazi Germany.

The Soviets also helped Germany to avoid British naval blockades by providing a submarine base, Basis Nord, in the northern Soviet Union near Murmansk.[188] This also provided a refueling and maintenance location, and a takeoff point for raids and attacks on shipping.[188] In addition, the Soviets provided Germany with access to the Northern Sea Route for both cargo ships and raiders (though only the commerce raider Komet used the route before the German invasion), which forced Britain to protect sea lanes in both the Atlantic and the Pacific.[19

Stalin was actively helping Nazi Germany's war effort.

For some historical context: Not only did he buy time for the Soviet Union, he also invaded Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, parts of Romania and tried the same thing with Finland. He was an evil bag of shit, just like Hitler was.

He was an evil bag of shit, just like Hitler was.

Hitler was sane. Stalin was insane. He had dementia last 10 years or so of his life.

well he was also very happy with the results of this pact and even

"in October 1940, Stalin traded letters with Ribbentrop, with Stalin writing about entering an agreement regarding a "permanent basis" for their "mutual interests."

Stalin couldn't believe that Hitler is breaking the pact and attacking Russia:

"In the initial hours after the German attack commenced, Stalin hesitated, wanting to ensure that the German attack was sanctioned by Hitler, rather than the unauthorized action of a rogue general.[30]

Accounts by Nikita Khrushchev and Anastas Mikoyan claim that, after the invasion, Stalin retreated to his dacha in despair for several days and did not participate in leadership decisions."

Putin defends doing then what he's trying to do now.

Just five years ago he told that "it was against will of USSR people, personal deal between Stalin and Hitler".

That's like "no our forces in Crimea" - "there were our forces in Crimea".

Sorry, but at some point Russians have to develop the ability to say "yeah we fucked up, sorry".

[–]AngryCanadian [スコア非表示]  (2子コメント)

why? Admitting to anything at any level is stupid. Russians have developed it long ago, and deemed it as useless.

It's why they have such poor relations with their neighbors, even today.....

A little bit of humility goes a long way in the international community.
