The "are you sick" part is so true! Once I came to work and my manager asked me if I'm sick. I told her I'm not wearing any make up that's why I look sick. And she said: "That's not true, you look so pretty without make up!" BUT YOU JUST SAID...........

I think it's a relativity thing more than anything else. When you wear makeup every day, you look different without it. I'd be willing to bet that if you meet someone for the first time, they won't think you look sick. I bet you could also tone down the makeup over a week or so to achieve the same effect.

Also 90% of the time when girls who usually wear make up decide not to it's because they aren't feeling well. Not necessarily sick but not fully healthy

I'd never thought of this. This is actually a very valid point.

1% of time I leave the house makeupless it's because I woke up and felt so good I didn't need it

The other 99% is because I'm hungover, tired, woke up late, eyes too puffy, etc.

So the question "are you feeling ok?" is actually perfectly reasonable the majority of the time.

Go ahead and ask that question if you are ok with following it up with "because your face looks uglier"

My rule of thumb is that I never ask ANYONE if they are sick or tired based on the look of their face. If they are coughing a lot, I'll ask if they're sick- if they are moving around slowly and yawning a lot , I'll ask if they're tired.

Yes!

Although I suppose then you run the risk of reminding people that they're tired/hungover/sick etc...

But I think most people are adult enough to deal with that!

That's why the trick to NOT looking sick or hungover is to actually wear a bit more makeup. Then you just look like you decided to wear bolder makeup. People notice the red lipstick instead of your tired eyes, that kind of thing.

Just compare yourself - "natural" makeup looks like there is no makeup but just a very healthy looking person (2. from the left). Full makeup looks artifical (last one).

Compared to "natural" makeup even a healthy person looks less perfect.

This is the reason why I don't like wearing make-up. The more I wear it, the more I dislike my face without it.

I used to do super heavy makeup, like nightclub smokey eyes to go to work. When I toned it down, I looked so unlike myself it freaked me out.

On the upside, I'm mid-transition to male now, and without the makeup everyone thinks I'm a different person. Convenient!

It might also have something to do with the fact that regularly, everyday use of make-up can be horrible for your natural complexion. When I wear make-up on a regular basis, I get these red splotchy patches on the side of my face and blackheads everywhere (yes, I wash my face, this still happens). I haven't worn make-up in several months and my skin is smooth and even. It's crazy.

Exactly. I don't get how women complain about it all the time. If you actually didn't wear make-up regularly, as some women I know don't, people aren't going to constantly ask you every day if you look sick.

But if you regularly wear it and then one day you DON'T have it on, of course people are going to notice a difference.

I think a lot of it has to do with how other women treat women who don't wear makeup. Some are not so kind. Often, people will say a woman who doesn't wear makeup doesn't take care of herself or that she doesn't care what other people think of her (obviously suggesting that people will not think well of her). Of course, that's stupid, but that's society.

I'm in the engineering field. Many people associate vanity with stupidity. It's difficult enough to be taken seriously as a petite woman-- I don't wear makeup, nail polish, or anything scented to work.

And on the flip side of the coin, I had several bar encounters in college when 'negging' men commented that I'd look real pretty if I tried a little, or if I dressed better. It's like they don't see the point of life for a woman if you're not trying to be beautiful for a man.

Yeah, fuck those dudes...

Another female engineer here.

I wear light makeup and do my nails however I want. I wear nice dresses/blouses/office attire on days I don't have to be in the lab or in the field. I have confidence that my workplace bases my competence and intelligence on the quality of my work, not how "feminine" I appear.

It's not always easy working in a male dominated profession, I really do understand that. If you aren't wearing makeup because you simply don't want to wear makeup, that's one thing entirely. If you aren't wearing makeup because you want to be taken seriously, you should take a minute to question how your performance at work is being evaluated, and figure out if you're honestly comfortable working in an environment that places more value on conforming to masculine standards than they do on quality.

That's what I do. In middle and high school I wore it nearly every day, but once I got to college and my acne got worse I stopped wearing it so much to help clear things up. And now I hate the way my face feels with makeup on, so I wear it maybe twice a month for special occasions. My skin stays healthier, I save a ton of money, and people never say "you look sick" to me if I don't wear it. It took me many years, but I'm now almost completely comfortable with how I look without makeup.

It depends on what kind of makeup you're talking about. People have been painting on themselves since the stone age. Foundation type skin brighteners were used by the ancient Greeks. Especially for drama and comedies. Egyptians used crushed bugs to make eye liner.

It's nothing new or even anything invented by western culture. It's just a thing people do.

Every girl looks 12 to me until they get to their late 20s. It makes finding a girl my own age very difficult.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that wearing too much makeup is the norm for teenage girls nowadays.

Hmmm sounds like a tricky business. I do believe there are ways to obtain this info while chatting to a girl and flattering her instead of offending her. For example, depending on the circumstances and personality, one might approach a girl with a comment about how a cop just walked by and asked if 'that girl over there' was old enough to work there, or whether she has a driver's licence, because she doesn't look a day over 15. Or just ask how long she's been employed at a particular place, whether she's in college, etc.

I hardly ever wear makeup. No one ever tells me I look exhausted or ill. That's because they're not used to seeing my face made up a certain way, so not wearing makeup isn't a big change for them.

For women who do wear makeup, of course they look different when they don't wear it. Other people don't realize that the difference is due to the lack of makeup (or they assume they aren't wearing it perhaps because they were too tired or sick to put it on) so of course they react differently.

I have a few female friends that rarely/never wear makeup, or at least very little. They get the exact opposite from what's suggested in OP. Whenever they actually do wear makeup, someone always points it out because they look different than usual.

Same here. And yes, they usually respond positively if I wear makeup, but that doesn't mean I look horrible without it. The whole point of makeup is to enhance good features, so I don't mind.

The trick is to be subtle about your makeup, and don't get dolled up for the Oscars every day — so when you do go to a fancy shindig, there's a noticeable difference.

Side note: I often wonder if we wear makeup to cover blemishes caused by clogged pores from wearing makeup all day that we have to cover up with more make up...

It's a valid point, and is probably applicable for some women. I know that I use Bare Minerals instead of other brands because it feels like my face can breathe while still doing it's job! There are healthy ways to wear makeup, and unhealthy ways. (i.e. going to sleep without taking your makeup off, using face wash incorrect for your skin type, etc)

I used to not do my eyebrows, but I have very thin, sparce eyebrows so I decided I needed to step up my game and shade them in a bit.

Now anytime I go anywhere I have to fill them in. Otherwise people always gasp and ask what the heck I did to my poor brows.

I only started doing this like six months ago. They must have thought it was a miracle that one day I just had eyebrows for the first time in my life.

Aww. I'm sorry that happens. :(

You must do a really good job though! Sometimes people don't fill them in well and they end up looking rather unrealistic.

Another thing I didn't see anyone mention is that most foundations have an SPF of at least 15 nowadays. If you wear it every day, your face will definitely be paler compared to the rest of your body when you're not wearing it.

Interesting point to make! I didn't even think of that.

Thank you! You can't go wearing tons of makeup all the time and then complain when we notice you don't look like you usually do. It kinda comes with the territory; you make the commitment of wearing so much makeup you have to keep it up. You'd think the lesson here would be to phase into wearing little or "natural" makeup. You never know, if that was the norm then people might get used to the odd no makeup day and think that looks better but if nothing else you'd expect people to not react so adversely. Seems like a win-win situation all round.

There's still a difference between minimal makeup and no makeup (if I wear just a little people notice and comment on it) but it's obviously not as drastic, so I think that would reduce the overreactions.

I think people like to point to the reactions as "proof" that people won't accept them without makeup, but obviously they aren't taking every factor into account. People have never given me any crap for not wearing it (except my mother but I think that's what mothers do) and they are always friendly and welcoming to me.

I can confirm that I asked a girl if she was sick however I still thought she was pretty without it. It's not an insult or anything it's just that we've known you wearing makeup for so long that you look significantly different.

Imagine if you never wore makeup, we would be used to your natural face and wouldn't think you were sick/different etc, there's no offense behind it.

It's not that she looked different, it's that she looked worse.

Well, compared to what we're used to seeing, she does. Blemishes, discoloration, not as colorful and vibrant looking. Women wear makeup to look good. It's not a surprise that without, they look 'not well'. If makeup didn't work to make women look better, then there would be no market for it.

It depends on the person I guess but generally what you're seeing is the lack of a smooth, uniform and sometimes bright facial texture that the makeup provides which I wouldn't necessarily consider worse.

If someone is suddenly an entirely different shade, with less even skin tone, it doesn't matter if they still look pretty. A change in skin tone (usually they look paler) is generally an indication of sickness.

But the point of makeup is that it's supposed to make you look "better", isn't it? So if you're making yourself look better with makeup, you won't look as good without it. It's just physics.

Can confirm. Never wear makeup, never get that kind of reaction.

I mean, makeup usually involves some blush, and a bit of concealer or something similar, so it makes your skin tone look more even, and possibly darker and rosier. So when you stop wearing make-up around someone who's used to you wearing it, even if you still look good, your skin is going to look paler and less saturated, which is a symptom of sickness.

What does it mean by "natural makeup"?

Makeup that covers up blemishes, bags under the eyes, etc. Also fills in features a little bit like light pencil on thin eyebrows, tinted lip gloss (as opposed to lip stick), and one coat of mascara.

Natural makeup is so that you still looks like you and anyone around wouldn't see that you are wearing makeup. Natural makeup doesn't really change much about appearance except make you look more fresh. Makeup that involves contouring (using different toned makeup to make your cheeks look higher/nose look slimmer) would NOT be natural makeup. Makeup that involvea covering up WOULD be natural makeup.

I did this comparison a while ago. On the left is no makeup, the middle is natural makeup (lip gloss, light foundation, light eyebrow pencil, and one coat of mascara), and the picture on the right is day makeup (darker lip gloss, eyebrows are enhanced not just filled in, eyelashes have two coats and are swept up and out, and I added eyeliner with a slight wing tip).

To be even more confusing, night makeup is also a thing. Darker lipstick, false eyelashes, eyeliner with large wing tips, eye shadow, blush, etc.)

If people want to know how drastic a difference "natural makeup" makes, take a look at pictures online of celebrities without makeup. Before I looked at the photos, I used to tell people to go without makeup. Because of those photos, I have been moved to never utter those words again. I still believe in a "natural look," but damn does a little pruning make a big difference. I now hide minor blemishes when I am feeling self conscious before I go out. The stuff is cheap and works wonders.

    ... am a guy.

Natural makeup can take just as much time and effort as a "full-face." In fact, it usually takes more. It simply doesn't look as obvious. It's the look that 90% of guys can't tell is makeup while 90% of girls would be able to tell in an instant. Some people equate "natural" with "light", though.

ITT people who think make up gives you spots.

There are a lot of benefits to make up, the main one of course is SPF, sun damage is the biggest cause of aging. Just, stop talking about something you don't know.

    make up != bad skin.

Bad skin = genetics, hormones, birth control, poor diet, poor health in general, or several other reasons.

When your young everything gives you spots. Hell, when I was a teen I'm pretty sure my face resembled that of a pizza just from looking at one.

Make up /can/ give you spots. I have really sensitive, oily skin with pores that clog easily. I have to wear foundation really rarely, and when I do, it has to be light powder that's easy to wash off.

On the other hand, eyeliner, mascara, lipstick/lip gloss, eye shadow, etc. Are always fair game. It's important to learn what your skin can handle when it comes to makeup.

How do you wash off the foundation? Foundation is made to stay on your face so you usually need makeup remover to get it completely off.

Also, there are so many different types of foundation. It can take a while to find one that works for you!

I really don't understand the argument that makeup somehow does zero to your face...

Sure its manageable and if you take care of your skin its not a problem but the argument that makeup does nothing is pretty hilarious, you're literally putting stuff on your face all day and its going to do SOMETHING.

edit: For the record i'm just arguing that the opinion "Makeup does absolutely nothing to hard your skin" is just flat wrong. Not that there are not SOME brands and types that are neutral OR even positive.

Broadly speaking, however, makeup is likely harmful more often than it is helpful. I believe its always manageable though with the damage it can cause.

I use a Korean bb cream with SPF in it. I used to not use foundation at all. My skin is actually better now than it was before; softer, clear, and far less greasy. Probably doesn't work the same for everyone, but it seems to for me.

Products can vary a ton. I had really bad cystic acne a couple years ago while working retail and I needed a foundation desperately. The one I got ended up noticeably improving the condition of my skin; when I took a couple weeks off and didn't use the foundation out of laziness, the acne got worse and when I went back to using it for work, it got better.

So it really just varies; some ingredients will do nothing for an individual (just...no effect), some will be positive and many will be negative. Facial skin can be really sensitive.

It could be having a positive effect if it has SPF or moisturizing properties.

To be fair, my skin is much worse when I wear makeup every day. It's probably a multitude of factors, but whenever I decide to stop wearing face makeup for a long while, my skin gets much clearer.

Sure, some people are very sensitive to makeup but i feel like this is just a wive's tale that at least where I come from, mothers push on you. Like old brown ladies are TERRIFIED of face coverage makeup like foundation and powders.

But I recently realized I just wasn't wearing the right products, cleaning my face properly, moisturizing, exfoliating etc. Like, wearing even just concealer, blush and liner used to fuck up my face a few years ago. Now I wear a full face every day (meaning moisturizer, primer, sunblock, foundation, concealer, powder, blush, liner, shadow, mascara, and lipstick!) and the fact that i wash properly before and after i've worn my makeup as well as the fact that my diet is decent now means I actually have better skin now, wearing a full face every day than i did even a year ago.

Completely washing off the makeup is key when wearing a full face. I use to breakout when I wore foundation as well. Then I bought good makeup remover and mineral oil. I never breakout now.

What are the benefits of makeup, other than making you look better (according to some people)? The SPF in most makeup is a joke, and is not enough to protect you, and not all types of makeup are even relevant to skincare protection. You can just wear sunscreen or moisturizer with SPF in it.

I'm not hating on makeup, but I'm genuinely not aware of any real "benefits" of wearing it that aren't cosmetic.

I get the "You look exhausted/are you sick?" all the time if I'm not wearing make-up. The "natural" look is my default make-up choice and maybe people don't know it's impossible to have strawberry blonde hair with matching eyebrows and brown/black eyelashes?? They can still see my freckles, but not the circles under my eyes or the nearly-unseeable blonde lashes. Sometimes, I just don't want to deal with taking it off when I get home for the day.

I once made the "are you sick" mistake myself - A girl I worked with came in to work with dark circles under her eyes, and the kind of pallored skin that I get after just throwing up. Of course, this is assuming that makeup is bad for skin. I know literally nothing about makeup.

If you use quality products, wash your face at the end of the day, moisturize, and always wear your sunscreen - then you will not break out.

When I wear make up my skin actually IMPROVES. I wash my face in the morning before applying my makeup/lotion/sunscreen, and at the end of the day I wash it all off with my shower.

By washing your face with a make up remover, or coconut oil twice a day you will have the best skin of your life.

Make up isn't bad for your skin. But if you don't moisturize and remove it properly, it'll irritate skin a lot. You also have to keep your products sterile and your brushes clean.

Makeup isn't bad for skin. If it was it would be disgusting altogether. It would have a cumulative, negative effect like smoking, or any other bad habit. The worst thing you can do is not remove it well at night. That's where makeup can be gross but it's not exactly designed to be worn without removing it. There are mineral makeup a you can sleep in, but that's another point.

I'm in Paris at the moment and the air is shit. When I don't wear make up, I break out- when I do my skin clears up because I have a nice barrier from the elements and I've got on 15-30 SPF in my products. I also remove the make up and exfoliate and use all sorts of awesome products. I've got one face that I plan on keeping for my life- I don't want to look like an old paper bag so why not take care of it?

Makeup is actually beneficial to wear and should be treated like food. Good food= better nutrition . Bad food= bad health, etc.

You also absorb makeup in your body so yes in many ways, makeup should be treated like food. And thus, like food one should also pay attention to expiration, brand, etc as factors that must be considered for ones benefit. You don't want to use old spoiled nasty stuff and the best way to tell is by smell and by skin patch tests.

I've always thought makeup is one of the coolest things invented. In another life, I would LOVE to learn how to turn people into monsters in movies for special effects. Anyway that's all I've got to say.

Back in the good old days when women would powder their face with lead oxide to get that paper white glow it would cause all sorts of sores and scarring so they would just put on more to cover it up. I like to think makeup has improved at least a little since then. I mean it can't have gotten any worse right?

If makeup was as terrible for your skin as all these poor makeup appliers seem to think it is, makeup artists and models would look super fucked up all the time.

Make up is actually really good for the skin, I use some make up that has a lot of SPF, which protects from sun damage meaning I won't get wrinkles or poor skin.

Also, not to mention make up does not clog up pores. You don't get spots from make up, you get it from hormones, or diet, or just being damn unfortunate.

Well typically when a woman who usually wears makeup doesn't wear makeup there are some factors that play into the "looking sick" think. One is that, well, you just might be. You didn't wanna fuck with makeup cause, well, you're sick, or just not feeling well. Also, removing makeup can be a bitch from what I've heard (and seen). It involves quite the scrubbing, and your face doesn't exactly enjoy it, hence the somewhat sick appearance.

Some people do have a bit of a "shock" when seeing a woman without makeup and often just assume they're sick. Doesn't help that makeup is popular for a reason; it tends to make one look generally better, especially in passing/at a glance.
