TBH, For me, not adding a description next to the apps is making me not discovering any new "must-have" app.

Edit: Thanks OP ! Here's my short list (when I switch between roms, I like to try out other apps that do the stuff I like and thus I don't have many apps I'd recommend over others)

  • Viral Pro: Youtube player that works well for me with an offline watch and videos in pop-up mode

  • Greenify: An app that freezes processes (perhaps this is not the ideal choice of words) when not used anymore. Adding this because I now have noticed a difference in battery usage!... At least I think so

  • Muzei with reddit addon: "Live" wallpaper that changes when you want it to. Reddit addon looks for pictures in pre-set subreddits.

What does viral pro do that the free version doesn't?

ad-free

How could you forget to mention Pushbullet?

Using Pushbullet AND Airdroid at the same time is overkill.

So just Pushbullet then? Got it

Airdroid is Pushbullet + MightyText

does it do background clipboard syncing? does it do notifying you for feeds/channels? does it play well with Tasker? does it allow sending stuff to other people? does it make pushing links as easy as alt+p anywhere?

Edit: P.S. Pushbullet does have SMS capabilities now.

I don't use airdroid atm, but I recall it doing all those minus the tasker integration.

Pushbullet SMS capabilities are nowhere near Airdroid and MightyText; namely the chat history for multiple respondents.

Point taken. It has been a while since I used AirDroid

reddit is fun - It's fairly subjective. I like it because I've found that reddit is fun is most similar to browsing via my PC. It seems to be actively updated as well.
DoggCatcher - I've upgraded to the paid version. (The free version limits to 10 feeds and only individual syncing.) I've never had a problem with it, and it's also frequently updated.
SD Maid - I've upgraded to the paid version. It does what it does well, and it isn't bloated. It's frequently updated.
Greenify - Others can explain it better than I can, sorry.
Wallpaper Changer - I use it to randomly change my wallpaper via local saved files.
Google Keep - Useful for saving notes.
CloudMagic - This one more difficult for me to recommend, as they've changed the pay model recently. (The changes only affect new users, so I was unaffected.)

EDIT: I am not rooted.

I pretty much use all the same ones except PowerAmp in place of Shuttle and Fenix in place of Tweetings.

Never tried Poweramp, Definitely prefer GMMP over Shuttle, but the beta wasn't playing nice with my cars Bluetooth, and Shuttle has just always worked.

Have heard nothing but good things about Fenix, but Tweetings was slightly cheaper and looked better in the screen shots. In hind sight I probably should have gotten Fenix over the summer instead of Talon..

Poweramp is an amazingly powerful app, but Shuttle's clean UI definitely puts it to shame. I'm great with using it now, but there is a learning curve when it comes to navigation and customizing everything. There's just so many things you can do with it that most other music apps just can't, but it comes down to what matters to you and what you prioritize when it comes to listening to music.

There are apparently more powerfully customizable Twitter apps, but for me, Fenix is perfect for me. Worth checking out if you tire of what you use.

These days i am such a casual music listener, simpler (ish) with a great UI is all I care about :)

Tweetings is almost too customizable, so if you ever want complete control over everything (theming and app releated), its worth a go :) Does Fenix have push notification support?

It does, but I find it to be a battery drain.

I don't know how you have it set up, but I get an email notification for any activity on Twitter and those come through basically in real time so I just use that as my "push" notification.

ahhh tweetings does it as well, but i have never noticed any drain from it, goes through Google's (and not twitters) push API I believe.

I'll have to try again. Maybe it was an issue that has since been corrected. But as I said, when I'm already getting email notifications in real time, having then another layer of duplicate notifications is kinda redundant for the way I have things set up.

ahhh, haven't used the email notifications in a while, completely forgot about them, and the phone notifications.

Where is smart notifications?

Does anyone have any good examples of what you can use AutoVoice/Tasker to do? I found a few, but none that are useful to me yet. Can I adjust the volume with a command for example?

I started off by watching some of Armando Ferreira's videos;

AutoVoice Tasker with Google Now

This is probably the best one to watch: Tasker | Chromecast Netflix Variable Tip

He goes through most of the basic things you'll need to know, like automated tapping and typing on the screen, delays and ofcourse how to actually set the voice commands

Home automation

[–]CliffCawleyCalendar Notify 9

I use most of the ones already mentioned but I also use an app I wrote called Calendar Notify.

It basically displays all your calendar events on your lockscreen or notification area and I use it to manage my daily agenda.

I'm mentioning it here as many others have said they've found it to be a must have app after they've tried it out and I agree with them :)

How dare you forget Pushbullet?

It seems like PushBullet is a huge circlejerk in the reddit android community. Sure, it's a great app for some, but people make it out as if EVERYONE needs it.

You are correct not everyone needs it. But the answer txts from your machine while you are working does make it a strong contender.

I would rather have an iMessage type interface. I don't like only seeing the most recent message

I could get behind that, the ability to access your texts in their entirety would be awesome. However I doubt it is going to happen any time soon. At least not with every client available, maybe a few might get support.

If you work at a computer during the day but still interact with your phone quite a bit, it's pretty invaluable. Mirrored notifications, responding to texts from your computer, universal copy and paste, and of course sending files/links back and forth are all things I do almost every day.

I love PushBullet, but the universal copy and paste never seems to work for me. If I'm at my computer, I just Ctrl+c like normal and it'll be copied into the clip tray on android?

Yeah. But you have to enable it in settings in the phone app as well as the desktop companion (or Chrome extension).

Ah, forgot to enable on the phone. Thanks!

I find it annoyingly that some SMSs that I send from my computer aren't viewable in my phone when I look at the conversation later in the day

I would've included it, but I use the AirDroid desktop notification feature

One thing i like on Pushbullet is that you can easily share links, files or texts to any PC/Mobile or to friends using Pushbullet directly from Google Chrome on PC

For you, AirDroid works well, for some of us, Pushbulllet is the best. Why not include both, options never hurt.

Wait... BTSync wants you to pay if you want to sync more than 2 folders now?

How is... I mean, I'm providing 100% of the storage and bandwidth, so why... wow.

Because writing the application is not free

That's fair, but $49.99/year is insane IMO. It should be like a one-time $3 purchase in the app store.

woah I didnt realize it was that expensive, youre right! I use drive synccrypt now

  1. Atarashii! or PocketMAL for updating your anime/manga lists on the fly.

  2. Backgrounds HD Wallpapers - I like this one for the extra feature for setting backgrounds.

  3. Reddit Is Fun - Since we're posting Reddit apps, I consider this one the best. I've tried them all, used them for few days to see if I like them, and frankly, this one works the best.

  4. Wally - Replacement for the other app (wallhaven or something, can't remember) that pulls wallpapers from wallhaven (wallbase successor).

I'd like to expand this list with following items:

  • MoonReader
  • Instagram
  • Dropbox
  • DePict selfie timelapse
  • QuickPic (since Android removed internal gallery)
  • BaconReader

I used bacon reader for a while, i found sync for reddit to be much more attractive and functional.

[–]CliffCawleyCalendar Notify 3

I agree, sync for reddit is my reader of choice for Android

Sounds not good (I'm a part of team which develop Baconreader)

I just found bacon readers interface dull.

For those who don't have Kindles (and therefore aren't concerned about reading progress syncing between devices), MoonReader is definitely the best. BaconReader is probably the 4th or 5th most popular reddit app, so I'd argue there isn't one essential one but many that suit different preferences. And I'd have to go with OneDrive over Dropbox since it's so well-integrated into my Windows 8 computer. Others probably like Drive the best.

Quickpic is better IMO than even the OEM's gallery apps (and HTC's is quite nice) It looks great is and is beyond functional.

Since BtSync is made by bit torrent, is there anything illegal about it? Sounds like a great app

Why would it be illegal? Torrents by themselves are perfectly legal too. If you choose to download copyrighted content that's another story.

Makes sense. Thanks.
