No, Feminists Didn’t Chase Joss Whedon Off Twitter. Here’s What Actually Happened.

This post contains spoilers for Avengers: Age of Ultron.
As with any comic-book movie, Avengers: Age of Ultron had its detractors, including some viewers who were disappointed with Black Widow’s portrayal. Critics sighed at Black Widow being sidelined from combat in favor of scenes in which she talked about her feelings for Bruce Banner. Also, there’s the fact that Ultron’s kidnapping of Black Widow tossed her into the ill-fitting role of damsel in distress. Which is not to mention the part where she calls herself a monster because she can't have kids. … Put all this together, and you have a thoughtful feminist critique of a superhero movie. But you wouldn’t know that from reading some of the mentions of Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon on Twitter.

@josswhedon I bet you like homestuck you fucking garbage asshole

And so when Joss Whedon quit Twitter on Monday, many jumped to speculate that feminists had chased a feminist director from Twitter. Patton Oswalt, for one, blamed the “ ‘Tea Party’ equivalent of progressivism/liberalism” for “chas[ing] Joss Whedon off Twitter.” But Whedon told BuzzFeed Wednesday morning, “That is horseshit.”
Instead, Whedon said he needed to recharge and get some quiet time. Trying to do that while active on Twitter, he told BuzzFeed, would be “like taking the bar exam at Coachella.”
This isn’t the first time Whedon has broken up with Twitter—he did so a couple years ago, citing a similar reason. Whedon told BuzzFeed that he’s been “attacked by militant feminists” since he joined, so it doesn’t faze him. “Every breed of feminism is attacking every other breed, and every subsection of liberalism is always busy attacking another subsection of liberalism, because god forbid they should all band together and actually fight for the cause,” he told BuzzFeed. Incidentally, he also recently found himself in hot water for his own feminist tweet, which called a clip from the upcoming film Jurassic World 70s era sexist.”
Whedon’s Twitter haters (feminist and non-) have been nasty, but Whedon recognizes it could be much worse if he were, say, a woman. “For someone like Anita Sarkeesian to stay on Twitter and fight back the trolls is a huge statement,” he said, adding later, “For somebody like me to argue with a bunch of people who wanted Clint and Natasha to get together [in the second Avengers film], not so much.”
Whedon might be the individual in the spotlight, but this controversy was never totally about him—or Age of Ultron. Reviewers’ frustrations with this movie are well founded, primarily because they tap into a broader frustration with the way movies, especially action movies, treat female characters. The Twitter rage, by way of contrast, shows what happens when you take a complex debate, zero in on one movie’s participation, and then condense reactions to 140 characters. And then the other side coopted Whedon’s departure to lampoon so-called Social Justice Warriors. All of the noise about this perfectly illustrates the chaos Whedon cited as his reason for leaving. Can anyone blame the guy for signing off? It wasn’t feminist trolls that chased him off Twitter—it was the nature of the beast itself.

Idiot fans of the movie seem to have entirely forgotten that 'black window' was *heavily pregnant* during filming. Any action scenes that there were had to be shot up-front while she still had her figure. That rather limits how much you can utilize the actress during filming. We've all seen this in TV shows. Lots of close-ups and standing behind high-backed chairs and body doubles facing away from the camera during scenes.

But, Slate, I haven't seen the movie yet!

I must know: does this summer superhero popcorn movie pass the Bechdel test?

@Matthew Spalding Actually it only passes it if you split hairs.

There's only two direct woman-to-woman communications in the movie, one starts talking about a man so it invalidates the whole conversation, and the other is about a baby's gender.

I don't do Twitter (or facebook or any other "social media") so I didn't notice his absence. All I will say is Firefly and Much Ado have earned him my respect. I don't know about the marvel movies.

"Reviewers’ frustrations with this movie are well founded"

Well, none of the frustrations listed in this article are well founded.  Did you have some others we don't know about?

We live in a strange time when people get more upset about throwaway lines in movies and things celebrities say, than about real problems we ought to be discussing in our society.

I cannot permit myself to see the Adobe Marketing Cloud "Woo Woo" video ad on Salon one more freaking time. This actually stops me from choosing to click on Salon video.

@Vanessa Vitiello Urquhart @LBC MBA RN I like you Vanessa but can you honestly contend that Slate is not getting closer and closer to Salon every day?

The only thing that keeps me at this site is the lively and occasionally astute commentariat. I don't have an account at Salon or Fox but I occasionally look at their comments. They make the folks here look like sages.

Just saw the movie, and as non-militant feminist and a superhero fan, I had the complete opposite criticism of Widow's scenes. I think if anything, she was portrayed as too physically capable. Someone who's just a human was shown flinging around as many bad guys as her building-breaking boyfriend or a god. It made it difficult to suspend disbelief during the fight scenes. I would have preferred to see her using her super-spy powers and training to get information out of people, more like the first Avengers movie.

Black Widow was sidelined from combat in favor of love scenes? Please, she was involved in plenty of ass-kicking. Plus there was that whole motorcycle chase she was in that was prominently featured in the trailers and was a major part of the movie. What is the minimum number of frames you need to show of her beating up robots in order to involve her in a romantic subplot without being accused of anti-feminism?

Like with the whole did-Tony-Stark-make-a-rape-joke hooey, this is another example of people looking for things to whine about.

"into a broader frustration with the way movies, especially action movies, treat female characters"

Except this debate is only relevant to true believers or people getting a degree in "intersectionality".

Just once I would like to see a movie that's exactly what these people want. Maybe if it's put onto screen people would actually have a visual aid to see the level of absurdity being advocated for

@Mark Yolktern - it's not a movie, but Orphan Black is amazing and also very intersectionally aware, so to speak.  It's totally possible.  Heck, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was doing it in the 90s. Blockbuster action movies just suck at it, for the most part.

She did not call herself a monster because she couldn't have kids. She called herself a monster because she was raised to be an assassin. She expressed that the forced sterilization was traumatic (as I would expect it to be for anyone), but the "monster" comment was in reference to her being a killing machine, and the film could not have been more clear about that.
Are you people completely stupid? Willfully obtuse? I honestly can't tell.

@Panique I'm sorry, Panique. Clearly you've been blinded by the patriarchy. Even though Hawkeye can have a family and Thor and Iron Man can have girlfriends, but Black Widow is a traitor to all women if she has a moment of humanity.

LOL.  This is a hilarious bit of CYA from "feminists."

When "feminists" are subjected to abusive language and "threats" from non-feminists on Twitter, it is horrible misogyny that must be dealt with.

When "feminists" beat up a "feminist" ally with abusive language and "threats," well that's just the "nature of the beast."  That's just how Twitter is.

It wouldn't be a "feminist" story if there weren't a double standard somewhere...

Clearly you haven't read the article.
Who did not condemn the Twitter abuse directed at Joss by "feminists?"
Who characterized the abuse as "the nature of the beast" in this case (when "feminists" are doing it)?
What website published this article, and what were the reactions of this websites writers when abuse was directed at "feminists" by non-feminists?

Try to keep up.

What the hell is wrong with Homestuck?

@Daniel Shatzer @Daniel Shatzer The fandom has a reputation for being particularly irritating spazzes at cons, and pretty much anywhere else they congregate, IRL or online.  Many folks translate their dislike of the fandom to hating the source material.  I don't really know that much about it, since while I like homestuck, I consider myself too old to partake in any fandom community, especially one dominated by 14 year olds.

So now are we not allowed to have art portray women as captives, ever?
I'm just sick of the constant need for people to be outraged over everything said, done, or made.

I don't know what he means by different "factions" of feminism, but I do know that Joss Whedon is a Grade A kind of feminist. Come on! Buffy! Dollhouse!

God forbid we should have an action movie that takes time to remember there are still human relationships between the characters. Those scenes were actually the strength of the movie, in a genre filled with ridiculously flimsy premises for everything that happens.

Whedon should have stayed on so he could learn more on how to check his privilege.  He showed he has no respect for the plight of those that self identified as android gendered who have a long history of being shown as villains.  He shows he a supporter of the imperialism and colonialism by having Iron Guy trying to take over Thorland.

I'm a little surprised to see the "she calls herself a monster because she can't have kids" thing repeated so uncritically.  It strikes me as a pretty radical reading of the scene.

It is interesting that the Twitter sphere may have completely forgotten that Scarlett was pregnant during filming, so maybe less hand to hand combat and a time when she's away from the fray had practical real life reasons? But no, it's of course sexism! All while the Scarlett Witch braving the fight and becoming the last person to protect that device from Ultron is ignored? She also, being just a human cannot take the beatings that Thor, Hulk, Captain America and to some extent Iron Man can. She in turn was not poked fun at the way Hawkeye was with the whole, I have a bow an arrow, what the heck do they need me for comic relief bits.
She can take down the most powerful Avenger with a lullaby, which wouldn't make sense if they didn't explore the feelings between her and Banner. Plus, they needed a quick way to find out where Ultron was building his army.
