Gave me the same impression.

The actual spiders are wolf spiders, I believe. They carry their young on their back, and when you hit the mother, they obviously scatter for their lives.

Yeah, it's tough but it's supposed to be tough! This isn't unbalanced at all; it just takes some learning of patterns and then you'll be able to live through it. People with this mindset actually exist.

I got Ipecac on floor one and that carried me until mom. Luckily there were some good items on the way, but you really need a good set of damage to get going.

Cancer, sad onion, tiny mushroom and chocolate milk was my setup :) Had a few dmg ups too, but they didn't seem to make a difference. 27 hearts at womb II, Wafer in the chest and I still only had 4 hearts after beating blue baby. Too close...
