It doesn't bother me. I too am biracial. Unlike Manila, I'm half black n half white. I look more hispanic. I am very used to people lumping all hispanics together when trying to decipher my race by throwing out every nationality a hispanic person might be to figure out what I am. I see this as Manilla knowing that most uneducated people would see her and make a ching chong type of joke even though she's half philipino, bc they'd see the eyes & automatically assume chinese. In other words, it's okay Shangela :) it's just a joke kitty girl :)

Well, frankly, whether or not ching chong bothers you is irrelevant.

I was really interested in the trouble that they gave Manila for her Asian inspired drag. Yes, she's mixed race. She's also of Asian descent that is traditionally more oppressed (Filipino), so you could interpret her horrendous Connie Chung as "punching up" (socially/class-wise).

That being said, 99% of drag race audiences are not aware of those issues and Manila and Raja saying, "Yeah, well I'm Asian so I can make fun of Asians," is a gross simplification of the issue.

Edit: I have way more issues with Raja dressing up as Hindu gods and wearing war bonnets, since she never had a good explanation for that anyway other than "get over it."

Edit 2: How'd I know this would be downvoted? Hilarious that any thought out response on race issues in this sub is just immediately slammed.

yeah, raja's native american and "african" (lol) looks were not "editorial" or however the judges described them, they were racist

I think that's great and I also find other ways to make fun of myself and my ethnicity (I'm Chinese). But "Ching Chong" really gets to me because people have used that to me in my face multiple times as a joke about how they think I would sound in my mother tongue or in accented English. And Manila isn't even Chinese.

It's fine if people don't get it. Just my T.

I get what you're saying. However, Manila's costume isn't authentically Chinese but a pastiche of East Asian/Southeast Asian motifs, and "ching chong" is the kind of language found in bad old Hollywood serials and comic strips featuring "dragon ladies" wearing what she's wearing.

So I view it as her poking fun of that kind of racialized iconography, and not Chinese folks or the Chinese ethnicity. (Edit: and not that I have to prove my bona fides, but I am also Chinese.)

I think that could be true, and if that's what Manila intended then all power to her. I just feel that the fashion was meant to read as suitably "pan-Asian enough" and Ching Chong also served the same purpose - to pay lip service to a culture she doesn't necessarily belong to by default and with a gesture that is also difficult to justify as authentic because of its troubled history.

I wish Manila was making a smarter point (what you said about bad old Hollywood stereotypes and the attempt to subvert them) but its a joke that not many people are privy to.

I don't know if you're giving her audience enough credit. Granted there are still people who subscribe to ridiculous Asian stereotypes, but I hope that a fair number are familiar enough with the exoticized and fetishized images of the Orient authored by Western popular culture to recognize that Manila's having fun with them.

Viewed through your lens, I can see why you think "ching chong" reads as cheap and offensive because it's not coming from an authentic place. TBH though, I've always enjoyed that Hot Couture look as kitsch. I can't see the vaguely Cantonese opera costume with the Thai by way of Vegas headdress (and by extension, her using "ching chong") as anything but a knowing nod. YMMV.
