Link your phone to Google
You can connect your Android phone to Google, which lets you send information from your computer to your phone. For example, you can send directions you searched for on your computer to Google Maps on your phone.
Link your Android phone
Step 1: Update the Google app
- On your phone, go to the Google app page on the Play Store.
- Touch Update.
Step 2: Turn on Google Now
- On your phone, open the Google app
.
- In the top left corner, touch the Menu icon
> Settings > Now cards.
- Turn on Show cards.
- Turn on Show notifications.
Step 3: Turn on Web & App Activity
- Visit the Account History page.
- Make sure the switch is on (green).
Step 4: Sign in to your browser
- On your phone, open the Google app
.
- In the top left corner, touch the Menu icon
.
- In the top left corner, you'll see the email address that you use for the Google app.
- Visit www.google.com on your computer.
- If you aren't signed in already, click Sign in in the top right corner of the page.
- Sign in using the Google Account you use for the Google app.
Step 5: Send information to your phone
- Do one of the searches below, like
note to self,orsend directions to my phone. - If a box doesn't pop up with the option to send information to your phone, try refreshing the page. If you just turned on Google Now, it may take a few minutes for the box to show up
What you can do once your phone is linked
You can get the current location of your phone if you can't find it.
- On your computer's browser, search on www.google.com for
find my phone. - If your phone is turned on and connected to the Internet, you'll see your phone's location.
- If your phone's location is unavailable, you can still make it ring for 5 minutes on full volume by clicking Ring. You can stop the ringing from your phone when you find it.
Tip: You can also find your missing phone using the Android Device manager which lets you find your device or remotely ring, lock, or erase it.
Once you've looked up directions on your computer, you can send them to your phone so you have them on your trip.
- On your computer's browser, search on www.google.com for
send directions to my phone. - Enter in your destination.
- Click Send directions to your phone.
- You'll get a notification on your phone. Touch to navigate to your destination using Google Maps.
- On your computer's browser, search on www.google.com for
send a note to my phone. - Type your note in the box.
- Click Send note to your phone.
- You'll get a notification on your phone with your note that you can either save to one of your apps or copy.
- On your computer's browser, search on www.google.com for
set an alarm. - Choose the time you want the alarm to go off.
- Click Set an alarm on your phone.
- An alarm will now be set on your phone's Clock app.
- On your computer's browser, search on www.google.com for
set an reminder. - Type what you want to be reminded about, and either when or where you want the reminder to go off.
- Click Remind me on my devices.
- When it's time for your reminder, you'll see a Now card and a notification on your phone.
Troubleshooting
I'm getting errors when I try to send something to my phone- Your Google app isn't updated
- Now cards aren't turned on
- Web & App Activity isn't turned on
- You're signed in to your computer browser with a different account than you use for the Google app
If your phone is missing, try using Android Device manager to locate it.
If you have the phone in your possession but Google can't find it to send information to:
- Open the Google Settings app
.
- Touch Location > Mode > High accuracy.
Availability & requirements
For now, you have to be in the United States with your browser language set to English.
The Android device you want to link needs to have:
- The most recent version of the Google app
- Now cards turned on
- Web & App activity turned on
- Google Now notifications turned on
- Location reporting on "High accuracy" mode
