Since a lot of people are talking about the real feelings behind this half-comedic post, I guess I will too.
I think an official post to the public acknowledging Jen's wrongdoings (
Not just the few examples everyone has seen [Exhibit 1 (link),
Exhibit 2 (link),
Exhibit 3 (link)], but her attitude in general) as well as the flawed and unpopular leak policy will go a long way here. The only acknowledgment posts the mods have made so far were sanctimonious and stubborn. Jen's
apology (link)
was abysmally half efforted, and she quickly tried to dilute her wrongdoings by playing the victim card, citing threatening hatemail she received (which I think goes with the territory when you decide to mod a subreddit of hundreds of thousands of users). And last of all, the toxic leak policy (particularly
the removal of links to a competing subreddit) is considered terrible policy by the wide majority here.
So yeah, mods, maybe instead of just hoping this dark incident disappears in a week, why not make a nice transparent and open apology to everyone that goes beyond just saying "oh mistakes were made and a couple of people were unfairly banned but it was reversed". Why don't we acknowledge and discuss the broken policy that enraged people in the first place and discuss the mod who went on a frightening and out of control rampage. If we truly want to move past this incident, this is the way. This entire thread is evidence that people are still angry. The community will be left in a worse state than before if we just brush this under the rug.
To reiterate one last time: I think if the mods would publicly admit these mistakes, authentically show contrition, and transparently discuss mod behavior/standards with us, that it would go a long way with this community and be a large step towards moving forward.
As a side note: I've also noticed that certain mods who are usually very sensible and very active have been gone since the leak. I'm curious how they weighed in on all of this.
It appears that subreddits can only have one sticky at once, and that the Thursday Throwback post automatically unstickied this post. When I'm wrong, I'm wrong. But my main argument still stands.
