Meghan Trainor recently released a video for her latest single Dear Future Husband and, as you’ve already been told to think you know, it’s super offensive. It’s the same girl-pop sass and bright colors we’ve seen in her early work, but this time with ultra-feminine, retro lyrics and themes similar to Lana Del Rey’s (except she’s different because I only find things offensive when I need to). Anyway, here are 8 reasons why it is literally a destructive and fascist magnum opus:
1. It’s clearly sexist because – you know – she plays a picky, high-maintenance girl, and no artist has ever exaggerated a crazy female stereotype before because that would be heinous.
2. Lyrically, Meghan Trainor asks to be taken on a date, complimented and apologized to. She asks men to do a lot of things she probably thinks of as romantic due to her upbringing, personality and female identity. DISGUSTING.
3. She has several men try a carnival strength tester, and acts unimpressed. How dare she exercise her artistic prerogative like this?! This is so offensive to men. And women. And carnivals. Did she even think to ask every single possible listener what offends them before filming this video!?
4. And please, she doesn’t even have a female love interest? Choosing to date men is so fucking homophobic, I literally can’t.
5. Ugh. She wants to clean and do groceries. Basic home maintenance is literally the most degrading thing anyone has done, and by showing it in a music video she is forcing thousands of young girls into this cruel practice. NOBODY HAS EVER DONE THIS BEFORE.
My mom just called to tell me after watching this video she quit her job to scrub the floor more often.
6. The song references certain expectations of husbands and wives. By having this perspective, Meghan Trainor has singlehandedly erased decades of gender equality. In fact, shortly after the video hit a million views, the 19th Amendment was instantly revoked and the Statue of Liberty grew a penis.
7. She asks for flowers on her anniversary. To quote Mic.com, these “retrograde relationship expectations place heteronormative gender roles into inflexible molds.”
Look at that. Look at those inflexible molds. Just ruining things everywhere.
I am so fucking offended she is not a gay man, or that she doesn’t hate getting flowers as much as I do. Since Meghan Trainor is the ultimate authority on gender roles and sexual norms, she is literally forcing people to fit into the caricatures presented in the music video.
8. She forgot that music videos are now political commentary, not just entertainment forms. Remember, because Taylor Swift had that one black girl twerking, Shake It Off was racist. Ignore the other black women in the other dancing scenes. Black girl twerking, racism. The political subtext is what matters, not the song or the entertainment. And that subtext is definitely oppressive. Meghan Trainor probably starter this video thinking, Great, now that I’m done with All About That Bass, how can I disenfranchise a gender? because clearly, this is the work of a machiavellian misogynist, hellbent on ruining decades of progress one doo-wop at a time.
