stereotypes stick because they are accurate to an extent

[–]Antem24 30 ポイント31 ポイント  (9子コメント)

This is a topic that merits a lot of discussion. Stereotypes can reinforce stereotypical behavior. Stereotypes, even when based on reality, can be harmful. Stereotypes do not justify racism, but can reinforce a racist worldview, even if in people who are not trying to be racist.

If you are bombarded with examples of black people being violent, you might start to make that association subconsciously, regardless of whether you mean to. That's why stereotypes are dangerous.

It's ultimately not even important if black people are more likely to be criminals, or any other ideas you have. The important thing is to judge each person based on who they are. Everyone is a human being, with thoughts, feelings, emotions, and their own lives. Think of everyone that way instead of what group they belong to and the world will be a better place for it.

Nah, that's how stereotypes will save your ass from being mugged or murdered.

you need to make assumptions to get on in life. i welcome the chance for people to demonstrate that they dont fit a negative stereotype but if im in the midst of a violent demonstration its just practical to assume that people are unlikely to want to invite you home and discuss the merits of Chaucer over tea and crumpets.

Yeah, assumptions are unavoidable. I won't deny that. But you should be aware of the assumptions you make and the reasons you make them. Particularly when you are dealing with other people. If you aren't careful, you might start writing people off for the entirely wrong reasons. If you are in a riot and need to save your life, then flash judgments might be more helpful. But in normal everyday life, it is never going to hurt you to make an effort to give everyone you meet a blank slate. Don't make anyone have to prove you wrong. That's unfair to them.

making assumptions about people happens regardless of colour or any other defining characteristic will occur whether you try to or not. trying to humanise the reasons why you shouldn't is a moot.

You can definitely keep track of your biases. It actually does go a long way to making sure it doesn't affect the way you behave, and more importantly, the way you think. You do form mental habits, and I just think it is much better to get in a mental habit of ignoring assumptions about race and gender. You might still make assumptions, but at least they won't define the way you treat other people.

All these assumptions that we have about certain groups of people, they are all learned, even if they are subconscious. So if you can step back and examine whether it is actually morally right to have these assumptions, you can make a conscious decision to try to keep them or to leave them behind. In the case of judging someone based on their skin color, it is almost always beneficial, and in my opinion morally better to leave predispositions behind. It is almost always more harmful to judge someone based on their skin color, and there is pretty much no drawback to eliminating that habit.

you need to make assumptions to feel comfortable with your poor judgement. My sister has two half black children. Their families are wonderful people. Couple of them have even been in prison, but came out better people than when they went in. They're also fantastic cooks and great parents (relative to their own. ;))

Not trying to fully dismiss you man, but as a 24 yr old white kid who grew up going to a school where 80% of the population was black, stereotypes are wrong. You see what you want to see in the black population. For every one thug, there are ten Morgan Freemans. We just choose to ignore the latter because it goes against our belief.

self-fulfilling prophesy

If you don't make basic assumptions while interacting with the world, you are an idiot.

When you see a video of a white person being violent, do you pull up an equivalent stereotype about white people and pat yourself on the back for having it?

[–]antichristreboot -2 ポイント-1 ポイント  (1子コメント)

Hmm, depends on the clothing,

[–]son_nequitur 1 ポイント2 ポイント  (0子コメント)

What does a white person have to wear for their behavior to cause you to make generalizations about all white people?

[–]ivyleague481 -1 ポイント0 ポイント  (0子コメント)

If I see a white kid shoot up a school I do. Each group has stereotypes that are more often correct than people want to admit. These will change as the behavior of the group changes.

I am not going to run around and act like school shootings are not majority a white issue.

You can run all the social justice and public messenging campaigns you want, when <20% of the population is doing half the crime stereotypes will appear. It doesn't matter that generational poverty and disadvantage cause it, it doesn't matter that race isn't a cause but a correlation, this is where they come from.

Stereotypes stick because of subtyping, confirmation bias and the relative difficulty of breaking them in the face of reality due to not wanting to admit false perceptions

[–]Reasonable-redditor 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (0子コメント)

No stereotypes tend to stick because of your exposure to a certain community or demographic. If I didn't know white people maybe I would think of them as either serial killers, pedophiles, and people who riot after a sports win because that is what I see on TV.

That's why those damn Jews need to be stopped after they took all the money from us hard working Germans. My support lies with Hitler.
