I don't want to be the one to burst your bubble, but it's a fake. The finishing is awful and look at the magnification.
[–]wombatsignals 5 points6 points7 points  (3 children)
Didn't have to even look at the pics. Uncle was mentioned.
[–]MyLittleFedora -1 points0 points1 point  (2 children)
My rich uncle from Guangzhou gifted me a genuine Rolex, Reddit!!
[–]snickers1[S] -3 points-2 points-1 points  (1 child)
My Uncle is an Authorised Rolex Dealer in the UK.
[–]MyLittleFedora 8 points9 points10 points  (0 children)
I expect he won't be for very much longer, then...
[–]snickers1[S] comment score below threshold-7 points-6 points-5 points  (20 children)
It's been well worn, he has had it for ages! I'm very confident it's not a fake, my uncle is a long time collector
[–]MyLittleFedora 6 points7 points8 points  (0 children)
So well worn the date font changed?
[–]RedPanda_98 4 points5 points6 points  (13 children)
Sorry buddy, it's a fake. A quick and obvious indication would be the cyclops magnification is not magnifying the date. Also the wrong font is used on the dial. The date and font should look like this and this.
Edit: Grammar and more links.
[–]snickers1[S] comment score below threshold-6 points-5 points-4 points  (12 children)
I think it's because I used a macro lens
[–]Nixtrix 5 points6 points7 points  (11 children)
Nope, definitely not that. Given this picture you took give us a better angle on the watch and lets us see it in more detail, shall we note what else is wrong with it? For comparison's sake, here is what I am using given my second point.
  1. Date magnification is terrible.
  2. The dial and bezel do not match. Blue dials get a blue bezel, not a black one.
  3. The hour indices' metal outlines are too thick
    • The lume applied to these indices is very poor, of obvious note is your 12 o'clock marker
  4. The hands are not flat, you can tell they have a bubble texture to them due to being pressed, not laser cut out of a solid sheet of steel.
  5. The gap between your band and lugs is way too big
  6. The text on the dial has been poorly applied and fades off due to improper/inconsistent pressure during the application process
There is no way this is a legit Rolex. If you continue to argue that it is consider this your first warning for violation of our Rules, specifically Rule #1.
[–]snickers1[S] -1 points0 points1 point  (10 children)
Sorry, I don't want to be in violation of the rules - I'm just having a hard time coming to terms/believing that a watch from my Uncles collection might be fake. It's a seismic shift in my beliefs since he has always been the go to "watch guy in my family"
It is a very old model. I can get in contact with him to find the exact ref no. but I don't want to insult him! As I mentioned, issues with the date may be due to my camera lense. I'm holding the watch in my hand right now and it looks as expected. I can see where you are coming from, but there has been some controversy around the Rolex cyclops lenses deviating from 2.5x occasionally.
The dial is black - that's just the light, I have a PC covered in blue LED's!
I have been told the watch has been re-lumed, sadly. I'm guessing that it why my uncle gave me this watch from his collection!
My only explanation for points 5 and 6 are the age of the watch. My Uncle travels a lot, often "off the beaten track" so the watch is a little (lot) beat up! The older oyster bracelets are notably lower quality that the modern once also.
[–]FantaFruitTwist 7 points8 points9 points  (1 child)
Look mate - this is a fake Rolex.
Nothing against your uncle or yourself personally - for all we know, he could have paid large bucks for it and was genuinely under the impression that it was a genuine Rolex - but it is not.
It is not the bracelet - it is the dial, which is just a mess!
[–]snickers1[S] comment score below threshold-6 points-5 points-4 points  (0 children)
As I said, it has been re-lumed, and I'm guessing not well! I will be going to an authorised dealer ASAP.
The only one I know nearby is my Uncle though! So I will have to find another AD
[–]partylifeeverynight 2 points3 points4 points  (7 children)
Do you have means of going to a rolex authorized dealer? They will tell you its authenticity. Then you can know for sure.
[–]snickers1[S] -2 points-1 points0 points  (6 children)
I mentioned above i'll be going to an AD as soon as I can, probably tomorrow. The only one I know nearby is my Uncle, so I will have to find another.
[–]partylifeeverynight 1 point2 points3 points  (5 children)
Why would you have to find another?
[–]snickers1[S] -1 points0 points1 point  (4 children)
Because it was my Uncle that gave me the watch, and I don't want the embarrassment of having to ask him directly if it is authentic.
Now I'm even doubting if I can trust my own Uncle, the authorised rolex dealer, and watch guru to the family.
He has gifted a number of watches to many family members. It would devastate my Father if his IWC anniversary gift turned out to be fake, or my Mothers Cartier 50th birthday present.
I'm shaking at the moment, but I still believe it's a real watch, the photos are a little deceiving and it's an old model.
[–]partylifeeverynight 3 points4 points5 points  (4 children)
I'm sorry man, but even when well worn, good finishing shines through. This is definitely a fake. Don't take my word for it though, look online at some genuine subs and note the differences.
[–]snickers1[S] -5 points-4 points-3 points  (3 children)
As I said below, my uncle has owned a number of watches, and gifted my Dad an IWC which was serviced via an authorised retailer with no issues. My Uncle has owned/sold 50+ watches and is a long time collector.
He would have noticed if this was fake. I would feel stupid even having to ask him. It is an older model, and the photos are perhaps deceiving.
[–]partylifeeverynight 1 point2 points3 points  (1 child)
If photos are deceiving, would you take some more close ups? Also maybe remove the end links and photograph the serial number?
Edit: question mark.
[–]snickers1[S] -2 points-1 points0 points  (0 children)
I don't have any tools to hand but I can provide close ups. I'll try to use a less deceiving lense
[–]Kevin_vanilla 9 points10 points11 points  (8 children)
wrong date font, Cyclopes magnification is off, its a fake
[–]FantaFruitTwist 5 points6 points7 points  (3 children)
The magnification is not always a sign of a fake, especially on older models - we have discussed that on this sub in great detail.
Having said that, it is undoubtedly a fake - bad font, poorly aligned lume, even the date is not aligned centrally to the window
[–]snickers1[S] -1 points0 points1 point  (2 children)
Thank-you for you're point about magnification, I tried to mention that above, and additionally the camera distorts it!
The watch has been relumed, and badly. I think that's why of all his watches, my Uncle chose this one to gift me haha
What in particular about the font? The date also appears central to me, and consistent with images online. As I have said, and you know, it's an old model, and I will be finding the ref from my uncle. That's probably the best way for him to tell me it's a fake (if it is). Could be an embarrassing conversation
[–]FantaFruitTwist 5 points6 points7 points  (0 children)
Don't misread what I said - yes, magnification is not always a tell, but there is no doubt this is a fake. It is not just a fake - it is a terrible fake.
Look, plenty of people here already pointed out all that is wrong with this watch - you are now just being stubborn.
[–]bungsana 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
more than anything else (well besides that the dial and the bezels don't match. the dial is blue with gold indicies, bezel is black), the date font really throws it off. rolex date fonts don't look like that, and especially the older ones. if you want more proof, take a picture of the watch with the date on a day with a 6 or 9 in it.
[–]snickers1[S] comment score below threshold-7 points-6 points-5 points  (3 children)
I'm 99% sure it's not fake. My uncle owns a large number of watches, Rolex, Omega, even one Patek. Through the years he has owned around 50 watches including some IWC and JLC. He has gifted my Dad an IWC in the past which has since been serviced with no issues. My Uncle would have certainly seen this was fake, and would not have given it to me if it was!
Just because it's not the newest model doesn't mean it's fake!
[–]partylifeeverynight 4 points5 points6 points  (0 children)
It's not just an old model, please just look at actual submariners from that generation.
[–]MyLittleFedora 2 points3 points4 points  (1 child)
I'm 99% sure this is a troll but walking in to any Rolex AD would confirm this is fake. Or if you want to keep the watch you can ask on RolexForums or one of the rep forums (Google them) but prepare for disappointment.
[–]snickers1[S] 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
If it's fake I want nothing to do with it, so I am happy to take it to an AD.
[–]snickers1[S] 6 points7 points8 points  (2 children)
I'm sorry to offend anyone. I didn't mean to be in violation of the rules. I honestly belive(d) this watch is genuine, given who gave it too me. It is a very big deal if it turns out fake, and I have no idea how to approach my Uncle about it. This could ruin him.
I will be taking it to a dealer tomorrow, and update you all.
Once again, sorry for "being stubborn", and breaking rule 1. Just a lot to take in right now :(
[–]Nixtrix 1 point2 points3 points  (1 child)
I know i said it elsewhere in the thread, but thank you for being understanding and I know we look forward to the update!
[–]snickers1[S] 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
Thanks. Regrettably I think we both know where this is going :(
[–]SushiRoe 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
I'm not that great on identifying fake from authentic, but this one doesn't look very real to me. The date magnification isn't like what I'm accustomed to seeing, and the date font doesn't look accurate. OP also submitted some pictures without the filters and the face is purple/blue and gold, which doesn't look right to me.
Sorry OP, but I think that submariner isn't very real. I'm sure your uncle has plenty of watches that are real, but this just isn't one of them.
[–]splodinjoe 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
This is an amusing post. Also, listen to the people in this thread. This is not a real Rolex. As fakes go, it's actually a pretty bad one.
[–]EnderBaggins 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
[–]FantaFruitTwist 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
The lume alignment on the dials is laughably bad - look at 10 o'clock for example.
[–]MarloTaylor 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Please do update OP!
[–]RimjobRonny 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
Another extremely obvious tell is the bezel pearl - there are no fakes that are able to replicate the pearl perfectly, and this one is just plain awful. Compare your pearl with the pearl on the gen sub: http://philadelphiawatchcompany.com/wp-content/uploads/imported/Rolex-16610-Submariner-with-Date-Automatic-Chronometer-BoxPapersTagAnchor-221326026904-7-940x784.jpg
[–]python2121 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
As someone casually/maybe in the market for a submariner, this thread has been invaluable. Thanks for this tip, another great detail to keep an eye on!

Reddit is making me write a 500 word comment to accompany this.
Basically I have been really getting interested in watches recently, and am looking for one for my Birthday. My Uncle who is a collector heard about this and gifted me the Sub! I feel very grateful and lucky! It's a beautiful watch!
and with my "now not so humble" collection:
