Just out of curiosity, what exactly do you think "their work" entails here? They don't own the definition.

From what I can tell, "their work" merely entails the creation of a website designed to hold word definitions hostage to a subscription service in an attempt to prop up a failed business model that was replaced literally decades ago.

In the words of Bob: What is it that they do here?

You're kidding, right? You think all that shit happens by magic?

What "shit" are you referring to? Do you mean the creation of the word definitions and uploading of them to the internet? Because that was done decades ago.

The "work" MW is trying to get me to pay them to do is already done. All they are doing in their "work" is to build systems which they can insert between me and those definitions.

That is a service I don't care to pay for, one I'd rather go without.

Are you being serious? Because thousands of words are added to dictionaries every year. On top of that, existing entries need to be edited to reflect changing usage. Languages grow and evolve and dictionaries need to be updated to reflect that.

Yes, a dictionary does need to be updated to keep up, but you're dramatically understating the situation, and it's important to understand that no publishing company CAN keep up with the expansion of language in the modern world, and particularly not with a staff of only 50 people.

There is no single "authority" on what is and is not a word anymore, and sure as fuck isn't any single authority on what any word means. There are hundreds of competing definitions, and no publishing company on Earth has collected them all in a single volume, nor could they if they tried.

It can be argued that volume, that collection of all definitions, is the internet, and Google is its index.

This is why so many discussions in the modern world absolutely have to start with an agreement on terminology, and why we so frequently ask each other what definition for a given concept we are using. Most of the words I use in my day-day life aren't even in the MW, or OED, dictionary, and when they are, the definitions they have listed don't even come close to being correct or up-to-date.

So yes, I'm being serious.

Really, most of the words you use aren't in the dictionary? Even if you work in some incredibly technical field that uses terminology not in the dictionary or you're some kid who uses a lot of slang, the vast majority of the words you use will still be in the dictionary. Give me an example of your everyday use where this is the case.

Unless you're using some cool, hip new definition of the word "most" that's not in any dictionary yet where it means "a small fraction." I guess that's plausible.

Nice cherry, picking, dickbleed. I was willing to tolerate you for a while, but it's clear that you're a prick, and so I can treat you with the same respect you're giving me. Bye'.

I'm sorry you don't understand, and vastly underestimate how much work is required to maintain something like that. Hell, even if the dictionary was never updated, they'd still require money to pay for server time and people to maintain the site.

Everything costs money, and we've have a really nice free ride for the last few years, but it can't be sustained much longer.

[–]critically_damped -2 ポイント-1 ポイント  (1子コメント)

No, you're not understanding. I don't give a fuck about their website. I want to look up the definition of a word, which they do not own or control.

Let that sink in for a second.

Now, understand that MW is paying to appear at the top of search lists. They are literally inserting themselves between me and other sites that will provide that definition for free, usually in the search result itself. MW and other "dictionary" companies are attempting to push other definitions off of my search results.

YOU DO NOT GET TO PRETEND THEY ARE DOING ME A FAVOR HERE.

Edit: I just discovered that Google offers a Personal Blocklist plugin for Chrome. I can now filter MW out of any future word definition searches entirely, and I will be doing this for any company that engages in this kind of behavior.

Jesus Christ, check your fucking privilege mate. You've apparently had so much GIVEN to you that you're completely unaware that NOTHING is free. These sites started out free because they needed a web presence, but had money coming in from traditional sources. Those sources are drying up, so they HAVE to monetize or they'll simply go away.

You can block all the sites you want, but you're going to be adding to that list until the web disappears for you.
