This is an industrial part of Gary. Not all Gary is like this. This is a terrible and unfair post. Are you completely fucked in the head?

Gary is a total shithole, anyone who needs convincing should just take a ride down main street there. But, I agree that pictures of steel mills are dumb contributions to this sub...

Exactly.

This is a subreddit called "Urban Hell", why would OP choose a nice part of town to post? Also I hear Gary, Indiana is a shit hole.

He has a point, this doesn't look very urban. I see just industry, no dwellings, no offices, no shopping....just industry.

It falls under places humans have built, doesn't just have to be an urban area people inhabit (according to the sidebar anyways). His point was it made Gary look bad by showing a shit part of town. That's kind of the whole point of this sub, I thought.

OP here: I get why /u/WarriorHealer would be angry about this pic; he must have some personal connection to Gary, and he doesn't want it to look bad. I can understand that. The reason I chose this pic isn't just the steel mill, but the whole landscape of it; there's a total lack of grass or trees, the entire thing looks barren and desolate. The fields are just mud and dingy-looking water and highway access. I thought it fit the theme of this sub and wanted to share it. Tbh, I'd like to see these things reclaimed; until then, I hope the pictures serve as a warning or wake-up call.

this probably is the nice part of town though, at least some people clearly have jobs there

Can confirm. Drove through Gary once and was forced to stop for gas. Driving around felt like I was in a war zone, with rubble and burnt out houses everywhere.

I spent my first 21 years on this planet in a town thirty miles south of Gary.

It's bad. Not just kind of bad, really bad. You avoid Gary at all costs. It was the murder capital (per capita) of the country for several years.

Yeah when I had to drive through it it was mid - afternoon and I had literally a whole van full of people with me so i felt somewhat less likely to be killed and have my corpse sold for drug money, but I would never want to be there after dark.

I made it until I was 20 without actually ever being in Gary. I was taking a bus to Midway airport in Chicago, and one of the stops was in Gary. Every other stop was just people getting on in a parking lot or something similar. Not Gary. There was an actual building and the bus pulled all the way up to the door, so they only way you were getting in was if you had already paid for a ticket and were in that building. It was a bit of of an eye-opener.

Now, my dad is a carpenter, and he used to have to travel through Gary to get to various jobs. Anywhere from two to four guys would carpool, and they would have their lunchboxes and tools in the back of their pickup trucks. It was just kind of a rule that they didn't fully stop at stop signs or their asses were getting robbed.

Even though we were only thirty miles away, the town I'm from was an entirely different world. Gary is, well, scary.

Most of Gary is worse than that
