I agree with the article and have always thought that the problem originated not with magic players but with having a large number of people in a small area for a long period of time. The real issue if we want to get right down to it is shops that are too small and have poor ventilation.

I think the musk from many people in an enclosed space definitely contributes, but I don't think that's what people are complaining about

The first tournament I played in on any level (an event deck tournament at PAX) I was paired against someone that, although I couldn't smell, I was almost 100% sure hadn't showered in at LEAST a day, based solely on the crustiness (yes crustiness, not greasiness) of his hair

Doctors recommend showering every 2 to 3 days. Not every day.

edit: If you really need to shower every day more power to you. Not everyone rides the subway or works out every day, so yes you can skip 1 day of showering sometimes believe it or not. Hope that doesn't make anyone gag.

If I'm not mistaken they suggest that you shampoo every 2-3 days, but you should still rinse yourself off and use soap in problem areas daily.

If I don't shower every day my hair gets incredibly greasy, so I guess I was giving that estimate based on my personal showering needs. If I had to actually guess I would have said that he hadn't been in a shower in 3-4 days

Good god, I hope you're just a troll.

Though I think this contributes to the problem, it doesn't do much to address the dudes who come straight from work as a fry cook, city worker, mechanic, or whatever who have ben sweating and stinking all day and then choose to come straight to the shop rather than going home to shower. I don't think I've ever played at an LGS where there wasn't at least one of those guys, and I would always just pray not to be seated by them or matched up with them. No amount of ventilation is helping there.

Then why doesn't this seem to happen with any other small enclosed places with a group of people in it?

Ever hear of a locker room? Or a subway car? This happens in lots of places.

You picked some comically bad examples. No, a Magic event should not spell like a locker room.

I gotta say I've traveled on lots of subway cars and the only stanky times were with some homeless dude practically melted onto a bench. Not helping your case there

Ever been to a party in a small apartment, or driven a packed car on a road trip? Flown in an aircraft, worked in an office, stayed in a crowded relative's house.

Smelling like shit is not okay unless you're a baby.

Locker rooms, yes...because of the equipment. Subway cars, yes...most likely from the homeless guy pissing in the corner.
If you want to make excuses, go ahead...compare MTG events to a smelly locker room that stores sweaty equipment or subway cars that are probably the best example of a disgusting compartment.
If you think that MTG events smelling bad are ok because locker rooms and subway cars smell...then there really is no reasoning with you.

Have you been to a crowded bar? They are easily the worst smelling places I've been, even nice bars.

It doesn't? Somehow Magic truly is magic, just not in a good way!

If you are truly going to say that these issues don't happen in "any other small enclosed places", you just aren't being realistic.

Does it not happen? Lots of times. But is it a real issue with small, enclosed spaces that aren't properly ventilated? Yes, of course.

That's why it's important to take preventative measures to reduce the NORMAL amount of hygienic issues attributed to it as well as try to eliminate the individual factor which exists but probably isn't fully to blame.

I have also noticed that many gaming stores, at least around me, are in less-than-great repair. Musty smell plus an ancient ventilation system does not a good time make.

Does it happen at other places...sure. Is it a common theme among other events...NO.
Defend it all you want...MTG events didn't get this reputation by accident.

What? It does.

It does; just, bad hygiene makes it worse.

It doesn't at the same frequency as MTG events. Go ahead and defend it all you want...it's not going to change the image of the MTG community smelling like ass.
If you are going to ignore the problem, then you are just as bad as the people who smell.

It does. I've noticed it on busses and trains, as well as in most crowded places I've been.

Sometimes, the stench is just that there are a bunch of people in too small of an area that isn't well-ventilated. That said, it is a distinct smell from "eau de poor hygiene", which I don't tend to encounter at my LGS.
