That's why I don't use clips. The last three times my bike went down, I jumped off and landed on my feet. I do a lot of riding in traffic. A bit of extra efficiency ain't worth it.

edit: Yes, downvote me. That'll make my experience wrong!

I won't down vote you, but I will suggest you try different pedals.

Clipless systems are tangentially related to increases in efficiency (and in a sport of marginal gains, even small increases are worthwhile). To wit, G. Mornieux, B. Stapelfeldt, A. Gollhofer, and A. Belli found in 2008 that shoe-pedal interface systems were essentially identical in terms of efficiency at all submaximal efforts; clipless systems were more efficient at maximal efforts.

Clipless pedals are more intimately related to improving bike handling by anchoring foot location on the pedal during stroke. It operates on the same principle as suspension--being in contact with the surface improves control. This is something that is difficult to measure in a lab but which is noticeable for experienced riders ("feedback" is the usual catch-all for this measure).

I'm downvoting you because you present yourself as being unreasonable despite a wealth of other redditors explaining that experienced riders (myself included) have no trouble disengaging a clipless system in an emergency.

Keyword is "experienced". For newbies clipless increases risk. So it is better used on trails or drome but not in city or on automobile road (at least first few month before skill becomes automatic).

That's why I love my BMX pedals. Switched them around with my platforms and my clipless on the same bikes, and the BMX were just as efficient as the clipless.

Now all my bikes have BMX pedals, I can "tune" the spikes as I wish, wear whatever shoes or sandals I have on hand, and I'm happy happy happy.
