世界のトップモデルよりも稼いでいる猫がいると聞いたら、そんなことがあるわけないと思うだろうか。
しかしその猫は実在する。彼女の名前はシュペット。シュペットは、シャネルやフェンディのクリエイティブ・ディレクターを務める著名なファッションデザイナー、カール・ラガーフェルド氏の愛猫だ。ふわふわの毛並みが美しい彼女は2014年に、たった2つの仕事で300万ユーロ（3.9億円）を超える収入を手にした。
この額を人間のモデルと比べてみると、たとえば人気モデルのカーラ・デルヴィーニュの年収は、シュペットの年収より低い240万ユーロ（3.1億円）といわれている。それも、世界中を飛びまわっていくつものファッションショーに出演して得た金額だ。
シュペットには2人のメイドがおり、旅行するときはファーストクラスだ。シュペットはアメリカのファッション誌「ラッキー」の表紙を飾ったこともあり、Instagramのフォロワーは5万4000人を超えている。
そんな贅沢な生活をするシュペットが稼ぐ年収が分かったのは、ラガーフェルド氏がうっかり口を滑らせたためだ。ラガーフェルド氏は、ファッションのウェブサイト「The Cut」に「シュペットは昨年、2つの仕事をして300万ユーロ稼いだんだ。1つはドイツの自動車メーカー、もう1つは日本の化粧品の仕事だよ」と語っている。
日本の化粧品の仕事とはコスメブランド「シュウウエムラ」とのコラボレーション企画で、セレブ猫シュペットと遊べるサイトを立ち上げた。そしてドイツの自動車メーカーのカレンダーの写真を撮影をした。
ラガーフェルド氏はシュペットの仕事を慎重に選んでいるという。「食べものなどの仕事は受けません。その手の仕事をするには、彼女は上品すぎますからね」
ラガーフェルド氏は、法で許されるのならシュペットと結婚したいと認めたこともあるほど、シュペットを溺愛している。
シュペットの本『Choupette: The Private Life of a High-Flying Fashion Cat（訳/シュペット：セレブなファッション・キャットの私生活）』によれば、シュペットはゴヤール製の高価な器で食事をし、自分専用のiPadまで持っているという。
シュペットに夢中の81歳のラガーフェルド氏は「シュペットはほかの動物や子どもが好きではありません。いつも私と一緒にいて、2人のメイドが世話をしています。メイドたちの仕事はシュペットと遊んだり、美しい毛を手入れをしたり、目元のケアをしたり、彼女を楽しませたりすることです」
「シュペットは世界の中心です。彼女を見れば、あなたにも私のこの気持ちがわかるでしょう」
