If people with such small power get corrupted, think about bigger power, yea?

Dude. You have to be corrupted before you get the greater power. Show me a world leader or even a state level dude who doesn't become very "unreliable" quickly.

I think idealistic people sometimes do get into positions of power. But it's challenging to stay idealistic under pressure.

Yeah. And they lose the next election for not fooling enough of the people enough of the time, by which I mean they piss off too many people by telling the truth. Or they stick to their idealistic goals, but adopt an "ends justify the means" attitude, making certain deals to get them closer. Either way, it hardly works out well.

I'm cynical about conventional power structures, but I don't think the situation is that dire, at least not in every country.

When I say "dire" I mean on a scale of 1 to 10 I rate our corruption level at 7 or so, whereas you probably rate it at 9 or 10.

Nah, I'd rate it a 5 or 6 if Mao is a ten. it just pisses me the fuck off. EDIT. was thinking of my own country. The USA is an 7-8)

Yea, I am in the USA, so USA in my view gets about 7.

How bout Emperor Norton?

Emperor Norton:

Joshua Abraham Norton (c. 1817–1818  – January 8, 1880), known as Emperor Norton, was a citizen of San Francisco, California who in 1859 proclaimed himself "Norton I, Emperor of the United States" and subsequently "Protector of Mexico".

Born in England, Norton spent most of his early life in South Africa. He immigrated to San Francisco in 1849 after receiving a bequest of $40,000 (inflation adjusted to $1.2 to $1.5 million in 2014 US Dollars) from his father's estate, arriving aboard the steam yacht Hurlothrumbo. Norton initially made a living as a businessman, but he lost his fortune investing in Peruvian rice.

After losing a lawsuit in which he tried to void his rice contract, Norton left San Francisco. He returned a few years later, laying claim to the position of Emperor of the United States. Although he had no political power, and his influence extended only so far as he was humoured by those around him, he was treated deferentially in San Francisco, and currency issued in his name was honoured in the establishments he frequented.

If the admins start cracking down on undelete moderationlog etc... that's when I'd hop to Voat.

What? I have to openly disagree with you there. The general consensus seems to be that reddit is the free and open seat of modern conversation and information exchange... when in reality, there's still a whole world behind the scenes of censorship, shill comments, alt accounts, and manipulation. It may not be as centralized or powerful as tinfoil-hat people would have fun believing... but it is definitely happening, as this subreddit has exposed time and time again. And most people don't seem to notice or acknowledge it. So I would have to say reddit is more fucked up than everyone thinks.

Still, in the grand scheme, that's really neither here nor there. Things decay and give way to new things. Reddit's going the way it's going, so may as well begin the exodus. Thanks for letting me know about Voat.

Not sure if you know about this or not, but a few subreddits automatically remove posts if you don't link to no participation mode for reddit links. It's easy, just change the "www" to "np" in your link. That may help with some of your problems.

besides for personal info and illegal links, can anyone give me a valid reason we even need mods?

While reddit is about promotion.. sharing what you read, we do have a downvote button and thats strictly for moderation. And really in reddiquette thats all its for.. not even disagreement, but to downvote something that doesnt belong or add to the discussion.

so I greatly question the need for the mods. One of the beauties of social news gathering, is we arent limited by some editors decision of what we should think is important. We as a democracy, vote whats a front page should look like. There are some flaws but thats basically the idea.

when you inject mods for anything besides cleaning the mess.. personal info, child porn.. some spam but you really dont even need them for spam as we will vote that shit down... when you add mods you go back to the old model.. a minority of people deciding what should be important to us.

I do see the arguments for some of the current removals but OP has a point, some of his seem purely politically motivated. And for me that harms the core reddit concept.

oh sure you can make another subreddit but once one owns a topic, your just not going to make a lot of in roads.

I've often thought that they should only be able to 'hide' things in a collapsible way, unless they mark them as illegal (in which case, admins occasionally check that they're only doing that on the right things). People should still be able to see what was there, especially in the major defaults not founded by the mods, where they're just supposed to be caretakers, not discussion deciders.

What in the ever-loving fuck are you on about? what I'm seeing is American leadership making the decision that 1 American life, no matter how "cowardly", is worth more than an entire network of al-qaeda fuckers.

And this would make sense just like you framed it if it was clear that the American government gave that much of a shit about American lives. However, it looks like they mostly don't. You know if you don't take this singular event in a vacuum.

I am extremely well read on this topic. I should have framed it clearly but who is more evil, the man who put the "coward" in the position to get caught or the man who allows evil set free for one of his own. you are right, its all about framing

I remember when stuff like this would happen it would be all over reddit for days. But as the site grew in popularity special interest people got in power. People who had time and vested interest to be in power. Then when they want to stop something they just fire messages to their buddies and argue that the post is getting out of hand and all over the place and needs to be cut back a bit. Their attempt to help is actually an attempt to kill it.

I know this because I've slowly become mod of a few subs here and there and receive these messages from power mods requesting this sort of stuff. Even had a few mod requests who I let in who started quietly deleting comments and posts they personally wanted to censor in the name of "keeping the place clean, and keeping everything on track." I obviously removed them quicky, but the trend is pretty clear when you know what to look for. It's the fucking friendly tone policing.

Don't even get me started on the messages one of my accounts gets from friendly want to be mods soon as something anti SJW pops up in a thread in a sub unrelated to that shit.

A lot of these comments are threatening violence, "dragging cops out their homes".. "demanding blood vengance". So it's not surprising that the mods in P&S deleted them.

FYI there's often raids of P&S from subs like /r/Bad_Cop_No_Donut , whenever something particularly rage inducing is posted on /r/Bad_Cop_No_Donut inevitably there's the "what do those pigs on /r/ProtectAndServe have to say about this?!" reaction. Mods on P&S will often just blanket ban comments from non subscribers if they detect a shit-storm.

It doesn't help that someone in P&S replied to a comment saying he'd "unload 8 rounds into your sorry ass and sleep well that night". Trolling probably, but that ignited a shit storm between the 2 subs.

I'm fairly certain the reach and proven organizational power of reddit freaks out certain people in power. I'm sure they like the amount of time the populace sends on reddit sedated by useless fun links, as long as it makes people's servitude complacent. There is definitely a vested interest in keeping reddit thought/activism to a minimum. And yet it can also serve to keep people mindless. Anything that gets them through another soulless 9-5 day.

Gangs have guns. Cartels have guns. Terrorists have guns. Crazy people have guns. And the bottom line is, criminals, people who you and I could probably agree are violent criminals, have guns.

Police need guns. Police need better training. Police need better oversight. If it were up to me to come up with a solution, I would say they need to go through one hell of a traumatic boot camp. And when they come out, they are professionals. They carry out the law by the numbers. Almost robotically. The complaint then is going to be that our cops are too good at their jobs and everyone's getting busted with something. But maybe that's what needs to happen.
