A quote from an environmentalist from 100 years ago on a non-environmental subject in no way discredits any environmentalist perspective.

By the same token, you could say a racist comment by a Republican 100 years ago discredits modern conservatism.

Eugenics rose in popularity in the 1920s, but fell rapidly out of favor after the Nazis.

Brower was not an executive director of the Sierra Club until the 1950s. This was actually the low ebb of eugenics.

I agree fully with you. However, it's pretty inaccurate to use that quote as evidence that the modern environmental movement is flawed, just like it would be inaccurate to use quotes from, say, the 1956 Republican Party platform to say that the modern conservative movement is flawed. It says things like "protection of the right of workers to organize into unions and to bargain collectively is [our] firm and permanent policy" (see http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/?pid=25838 ). Things have changed since the 1950s, and to use quotes from the 1950s to discredit a modern movement just makes people look foolish.

Actually it is an environmental subject. They believe the population needs to be reduced to reduce our impact on the earth. It's a current, active goal. Just because it was said a long time ago doesn't mean it isn't still their ideal.

This wasn't just "any" environmentalist, he was the leader of the Sierra Club, and since the quote reflects their current ideology, it doesn't discredit anything. Also, conservatives are historically less racist than liberals, so that's just a bad example.

Population control has always been and remains the most primal environmentalist plank. They just have high paid marketing guys that told them that this kind of authoritarian leftism doesn't play well with the focus groups and that they should stick to the polar bear videos rather than letting their truly tyrannical colors fly.
