I love alienblue, it's the only app I've ever paid money for on my iPhone and iPad. But

the amount of downvoting and derailing of threads that has started to occur in this subreddit have begun to make it toxic

I find extremely disingenuous. Nowhere in the post about the iPad update(before the app was updated) did it mention ads, the entire userbase was completely surprised by this. That I feel is what makes this a toxic place, not people justifiably upset with this surprise voicing their feedback.

Like what did you expect to happen after the iPhone app went through the exact same thing???

An admin showing up and "making it rain gold for 24 hours" was further insult and not the open and transparent communication this community deserves.

In addition, I'd like to address some of those users who seem to think we're bad at communicating/we're abandoning the app. We are most certainly not doing any such thing. ...I'm sorry if you feel like we haven't been communicating, but the fact is that nearly everyone involved has been on this subreddit answering questions for the past couple of months, and us moderators have been doing it for years at this point.

Okay, but the sponsored posts were not communicated at all before being released. So I don't get how you can honestly say "I'm sorry if you feel like we haven't been communicating. You haven't been. Full stop.

This whole apology seems like a sorry not sorry and an excuse to get the previous stickied post removed.

Please do better, I'm begging you to do the right thing here, especially for those that paid for the iPad app before it became free.

Completely agree, I paid good money for this app and when there wasn't even so much as a mention of ads in the update it was a huge slap to the face. This community the creators of AlienBlue helped to create have every right to be mad. Please do what is right for those that paid for the app at least. The only way you can gain back trust from your users is to do what is right.

hey poorlifereflexes- I am sorry for all the confusion. Alien Blue iPad was released as a free app in October under new ownership (reddit). The old version of Alien Blue and the one released in October are two separate apps. The app you paid for is still under your purchase history in the app store. You can re-download that version and you will not see any sponsored posts.

Which will never be updated again. Which has a ton of bugs. right.

Ya see these are the exact mod responses that are not helpful at all.

[–]DoTheDew[M] -94 ポイント-93 ポイント  (13子コメント)

What would be a helpful response? You want us to say that sponsored posts are going to be removed even though they aren't?

Here's a quote from a reddit admin regarding upcoming changes to the API.

Regarding the commercial use clause: Running servers and building out APIs cost money. It's not tenable for large, commercial clients to profit off of reddit's API without an appropriate cost-sharing mechanism. In the future, we may choose to implement a more methodical cost-sharing program, such as what imgur does with mashape, but for now, we simply want to keep tabs on commercial use of our API.

Alien Blue is just the first app to implement this sort of thing. It would foolish to believe that others won't be following suit. A one time payment of $1.99 or $3.99 (of which reddit never even saw one cent of) is not enough to help sustain this website.

You can always use the old app that won't be updated. Reddit bought it and changed the entire situation...so go fuck yourself.

Gee I wonder why someone wouldn't find this helpful. I guess I must be "toxic" for pointing this out?

Since you asked, a helpful response would contain the following:

  1. Say something along the lines of "Hey, we should have told you in the release notes or in a statement that we were adding sponsored posts to the iPad version of AlienBlue. We screwed up and we're sorry about that".

  2. Explain why this is only on the iPad version and not the iPhone version.

  3. State in no uncertain terms that it's going to stay like this going forward and what future plans you have for the app.

  4. Apologize to the folks that purchased the paid version and feel screwed over for the way the migration happened.

While I'm aware that you've said most of that in different comments here and there, it needs to be in one statement from someone at reddit higher up than just a run of the mill employee.

Also, I'd suggest finding something else for /u/willowgrain to do. Customer relations doesn't seem to be their thing. But hey, that's up to you.

I love that mods being snarky as hell about a bait-and-switch is acceptable at reddit, Inc. You all implemented this without saying anything to the community beforehand. Please tell me what I will receive for paying for an iPad app that is now free. And, no, saying I paid for another app isn't an acceptable answer. That app, for all intents and purposes, is dead. This app is the exact same thing but will receive updates, and continue to become worse.

Right?!? These mods claim to want 'a conversation' then don't even bother to reply when people call out their bullshit. But everyone else is toxic? Give me a fucking break!

[–]mcilrain 13 ポイント14 ポイント  (7子コメント)

Since you're clearly aware that some users would prefer using an old version and lose access to new features and improvements just to avoid sponsored posts you must have a pretty big justification for its continued inclusion.

Maybe if the community knew of said justification they would be more understanding. That is unless the justification is as terrible as your non-response to this comment would imply.

As someone who paid for the app I would prefer that there remained a paid version which is ad free, which supports reddit through paying for the app, and a free version with sponsored posts. That's the only fair way to repay all the people who supported jase to develop alienblue to where it is now, not o mention those users were also supporting reddit all this time with content and purchasing gold. It's an absolute slap in the face.

[–]YourMothersAWhore 26 ポイント27 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Gee thanks, got any lube too?

[–]omeganon 9 ポイント10 ポイント  (0子コメント)

And this is the core of the problem. Those of us who bought the app feel that we are supporters of the development of the application that made it what you felt was valuable enough to purchase. Now, you're telling us thanks for helping to create this wonderful program but we don't care about you, go away if you don't like what we're doing. That is not how you treat a loyal customer base with a proven history of providing monetary support. Do you want to drive people away? Because this is how you drive people away.

Dont worry, they have made this space here. This "free speech zone" if you will, where you can air your grievances and concerns. Totally promise that your feedback is going to be taken on board. /s

Agreed. I mean even a post a week would be helpful so we at least know what is going on, and we aren't left in the dark.

While i get it that there's a thread or two about something annoying like ads, this is way out of proportion.

This thread is full of self entitled spoiled brats nagging and nagging and nagging on about a few dollars and "the priciples of it" on half a thousand dollars worth of hardware.

The price of the apps was so Iow i had no sense of entitlement after about two months, feeling i got my money's worth already.

Just wait it out, get on to a different app, or pay a developer some real money to make something that's up to your liking.
