Let me preface this by saying that I’m in no way trying to say I hate blackness or that I’m self-hating. With that, I invite you to spam my inbox with as many racial slurs as you choose, for I shall simply respond to each with a picture of a woman laughing with salad.

We cool? Ok.

Don’t get me wrong - the intentions for the #blackot were certainly good, and there’s definitely a need for people to feel better about themselves if for any reason they feel as if the color of their skin makes them inferior.

But…is there really such a worldwide hatred of darker skintones? I don’t believe it’s as widespread as Tumblr thinks, and while Hollywood could use a bit more diversity, I’ll admit, darker skin really isn’t considered ugly or disgusting. Hell, people are desperate to get tans nowadays to the point of nearly killing their skin for that darker complexion.

The #Blackout turned into a vicious race war online, even if it started as a positive thing for people to just share selfies. Black tumblr went berserk once the idea of having a selfie day for each race was proposed, and went as far as threatening and harassing white users for posting selfies at all on “their” day. Now, they think #Blackout needs to occur every month, and any non-black person who posts on that day is likely to receive a needless amount of aggression.

It comes off as narcissistic and forceful. Post selfies if you will, but why do you feel such an intense need to drag down everyone else while you do it? If a white person posts a selfie on their own blog with no tags relating to #whiteout or #Blackout, why harass them? Can’t you tag a picture with something other than “lol this is making white people mad keep reblogging” or some shit?

This also tends to give way to racial supremacy. Which is the one social justice thing that I find myself unable to laugh at, it gets under my skin that much. I disagreed with the last #Blackout, and received in my inbox a number of racial slurs from the black side of Tumblr. “House nigger” was one of them.

Here’s a few questions.

1. If #blackout is supposed to be a day for uplifting each other, why do you go out of your way to attack anyone who disagrees with the idea or any white person who posts a selfie?

2. If you hate white people so much, why are you using racial slurs that racist white people made up during the age of segregation? Against your own people?

Before someone runs in saying, “YOU’RE DEFENDING THE WHITE PEOPLE,” no, I’m really not. The #whiteout thing was just as pointless and was just throwing lighter fluid on a grass fire.

I was raised in a mixed environment. I was taught to hate racists, not white people. I was taught to be proud of who I am as a person, not because I have a bit more melanin than some. I’ve experienced racism indirectly, but it happened when I was young enough for Mom to keep me away from it. So maybe my experiences made me biased, who knows.

I’m just sick of the clusterfuck racism has become. People hating others for their skin color has been a thing for ages, and it does need to end. But it’s not going to happen overnight, and it’s especially not going to happen with each individual racial group trying to claim supremacy. Black Tumblr acts like it wants segregation back, which makes no fucking sense because, newsflash, you wouldn’t have any of the rights you have now. You can’t have it both ways.

It legitimately scares me how much Black Tumblr’s internalized this creepy Black Panther mindset. That there’s a specific kind of “blackness” all black people have to adhere to, otherwise, they’re just as “white” as the white people. And the fact that there’s so many blogs promoting genocide against white people and abuse just because they’re white, along with the tasteless and frankly stupid “white people eat their food bleeding and raw and proud POCs cook their food and add 90 tons of spices.” jokes. It makes no sense to me.

This got a bit long-winded, but…TL:DR, Drej hates the idea of the #Blackout because too many fucking people on this site use it to be supremacist idiots. (And I’m doing this while tired, so PM me if it doesn’t make sense.)
