I just got into it with the SRS crowd not too long ago (something I really should have known better than to do, but...) and this was pretty much confirmed: I was told that there is nothing wrong with being intolerant of the intolerant. On it's surface (as with so many things), this doesn't seem entirely unreasonable, except when you start asking the question: who gets to decide who and what is intolerant? In the end, it seems, this is little more than a shut-down tactic of the left to end conversations that, were they truly forced to address, they would fail at. These people will use ad hominem, things they dig up from your past, guilt by association tactics, etc.- anything as an excuse to determine that you, in fact, are intolerant (even if, hell, especially if that may not be the case), and that therefore they are free to write you off, so that they are right, you are wrong, and no conversation can be had on the matter.

Are you not making a similar argument to the one satirized in the post?

I am actually very tolerant of the intolerant, and, generally speaking, am willing to have a civil discussion on these matters with such people. I am willing to reverse my position on this and admit that it is very possible that I am misreading your points, but your argument here does seem to give the message that you are indeed intolerant of the left, even though you are ostensibly trying to portray yourself as otherwise.

While I am very often tempted to simply write off those with opposing views, I've actually found that generally it is much better and more productive for both sides to enter into a debate; this way, both sides can understand the merits of each others arguments and understand each others' opinions better, allowing for better debate in the future. I'd love to debate with you in this fashion now, if you do not mind.

You make a fair point: I should have added the caveat that I realize not all of the left is like this. Indeed, I almost did. I wasn't quite sure how to word it, though. I was tempted to say that it is only the far left who are like this, but when I think of "far left", what comes to mind are socialists, anarchists, or communists- and actually, I've had very good conversations with people from those groups on here. In the end, I suppose I hoped it would be assumed that I was only referring to a certain group of people on the left, but then, you know what they say about those of us who make assumptions. I should have clarified.

No problem! Everyone makes mistakes sometimes.
