It's a common tactic to lump sub-groups of an ideology who hold viewpoints contrary to each other together and treat them like like one individual who has idiotic incompatible views. It's a fantastic way to elevate your opinion of your own ideology with little effort. It feels fucking great when you are sure you're smarter than your opponents.

Every group has people who do it. Every person does it at one point or another, I'm not pointing fingers.

Oh, like claiming that some gay couples being unable to demand wedding cakes specifically from a Christian baker is the height of redneck tyranny.

IMO the overgeneralization whereby "religious freedom" has become synonymous with "abusive of other people" in the liberal mind is the real sin of oversimplification being hiveminded lately.

Honestly, it's a matter of what can be effective. I don't see sanctions as effective to stopping Iran getting a nuke, at least not in the long run- in the short term they may be effective, but I can't say for sure as I haven't looked into the topic.

Regarding Indiana, protesting the law and taking business elsewhere is something that corporations and individuals can do effectively. Personally, I'm in favor of protesting this law until there are protections for LGBT people- I'm all for religious freedom, as long as people do not discriminate against others in the name of religion.

How do you feel about government entities participating in such a boycott? And isn't boycotting Indianans discriminatory? If not, how is that different from boycotting jews?

Personally, I'm in favor of protesting this law until there are protections for LGBT people- I'm all for religious freedom, as long as people do not discriminate against others in the name of religion.

So, should an atheist have to cater a Christian evangelical baptism ceremony? Should a homosexual have to deliver flowers to a congregation that believes homosexual activity is sinful?

I think it could set a bad precedent, but at the same time I can see why some governors would want to avoid sending government workers to a state where they could be discriminated against.

I don't see there being an issue with an atheist catering a baptism ceremony, unless one party involved is a dick to the other. Regarding the second option, as a gay guy I'd deliver flowers to them, sure, but if they were saying hate speech at me while I was there I certainly wouldn't be coming back. So, I suppose it is situation. I'm haven't quite gotten my word choice for this right, I'll clarify if I need to.

The question isn't whether there's an issue or what would you personally do. The question is whether there should be a legal requirement for these people to serve such groups with their business.

This will be quicker and far more damning than government sanctions in the short run. If the problem persists I can see a rationale in some federal intervention to prevent government workers who are obligated to travel from being forced into discrimination.

That said I am left of center and absolutely DO NOT WANT to see it come to this.
