Seems like you're right on the money with the Pillars of Eternity thing.

Short version: Game has a joke about a womanizer killing himself after accidentally sleeping with a guy. Person complains about it on twitter, claiming this is the womanizer's reaction to a transwoman, and the devs and writers are transphobic. Totalbiscuit speaks up in defense of the devs and writers, cue the angry mob.

Shortest version: A limerick angers people. People attack. TB says people being silly. People attack TB.

But trans people are always the butt of a joke. Seen as gross or disgusting or perverts. It may be a light hearted joke but I don't think it's ok to make a lth ear kind of jokes about a group of people that are attacked abused and murdered at far above average rates. It's tasteless, pointless, and comes from a culture of ignorance and hatred. As a trans woman who is contemplating pursuing transition, things like this are very very disheartening. But of course to cis people who are completely unaware of struggles that I face it's just a joke.

Honestly how can you tell that the person in this joke is even transgender? It could of just been a man the whole time.

The joke isn't even at the expense of that person anyway. It's ridiculing the person killing them self.

Don't bother. To apply the wise words of a great man to situations like these

"If you could reason with ______ people, there wouldn't be _____ people."

This person needs to stamp their feet and get attention, good or bad, and non matter what anyone says or does will leave this thinking they've won because people agreed with them hence making their point correct, or disagreed proving they are being attacked.

They will think they've won no matter what is said to them.

Y'know, I've heard a lot of jokes in my life. Racist jokes. Nazi jokes. Dead baby jokes. I don't recall a single transgendered joke. So either I have a very selective memory... Or you're twisting the truth to fit your narrative.

Trans people aren't always the butt of a joke. I've practically never heard jokes about trans people. The light hearted joke in question isn't laughing at or about a trans person.

The joke is purely about the ridiculousness of a guy committing suicide because he slept with a man. The notion I get from this joke is the original submitter saying "You slept with a guy you thought was a girl? So what? Get over it."

I understand and respect you have your struggles, but this is a joke. It may not be in good taste. It may not be good. It may be silly. It may be a bit offensive to some. But it's still a light hearted joke, not meant to cause grief or pain. Not everyone is going to be fully PC, all the time. That will never happen.

Yes. ALWAYS. Because no one EVER makes jokes about straight people, gay guys, lesbians, white folks, black folks, Latinos, Asians, Christians, Jews, Muslims, Europeans, Americans...

I've heard this claim many times. Still waiting to see some actual statistics backing it up. In the meantime, most black people in America are constantly concerned that a cop approaching them is a death sentence. I have to walk from work to a bus stop five nights a week in the downtown area, and I'm constantly worried a psychotic, drunk homeless person is going to jump out from an alley and stab me. It's not safe out there for a LOT of people.

Good on you. I truly wish you nothing but the best on your journey. Yes, some people think of you as some kind of fucked up pervert. But not everyone. Some cis people actually do support trans folks.

But of course to cis people who are completely unaware of struggles that I face it's just a joke.

Every single fucking person in the world has struggles. EVERYONE! They might be different from yours, yet we all still have them. One of the best ways to get through the shit that life constantly flings at us is to have a sense of humor, laugh it off, and keep plowing ahead.

So I'm a whiner for not wanting my identity to be associated with perversion and deception? I'm secure enough in my identity at this point, because I'm lucky enough to be surrounded by wonderful and supportive people who helped me discover who I am, but there are thousands of other trans people who struggle with their identities, and I think jokes like this are really harmful to those who struggle. Internalized transphobia is a real thing, and it makes it so much more difficult to stand up to external adversity.
