- it’s by dion-thesocialist, infamous on tumblr for being an anti-self dxer, which means that he doesn’t think people are able to tell if they have a mental illness or not and should leave it in the hands of (expensive, inaccessible, often discriminatory and sometimes just wrong) professionals
- mostly the comment tbh like i’m sure there’s nasty bits in the original post if i were to do a close reading but honestly i do enough of that for school as it is SO.
- as far as the comment is concerned its basically saying “fuck cutesy self-care, that’s not helpful or practical or realistic” which is INCREDIBLY alienating to people who may want or need affirmation/encouragement in the form of cutesy self-care
- and then going on to define realistic self-care as uh. things which require effort and energy, aka the exact same type of task that generally makes people need to practice self-care
- and like.. “take care of yourself by showering and cleaning” is valid etc but not at the expense of shutting down other ways of taking care of yourself (not to mention implying that if you’re not showering reguarly you’re not taking care of yourself which is, yeah, super ableist)
- also it wants you to apologize to your friends. for, uh, being mentally ill i guess? that definitely sounds super healthy and doesn’t encourage shame/stigma surrounding mental illness at all
plus that lovely little bit at the end where it starts making sweeping generalizations about how “tumblr just wants to sit in a closet strung with fairy lights and read their favorite fic” instead of taking responsibility, which is
- infantilizing
- demeaning
- ableist
- and operating under the assumption that it isn’t “responsible” enough to recognize when you need to take a break and do things that make you feel good
