how do you feel about "fiscally conservative but socially liberal"? i had a fight about this w my family because if you vote conservative at any time, you're screwing over marginalized people's lives, and that takes priority over the budget, right?
It’s absurd, for multiple reasons. “Fiscally conservative” politicians seem to always vote for “cost-saving measures” that screw over the people who need help the most. They defund Planned Parenthood, Social Security, TANF, SNAP, Medicare, Medicaid, and early childhood education.
Then, they vote for wars that are A) more expensive than any part of the social safety net they could cut, and B) kill plenty of civilians - often, more civilians than combatants.
Saying you’re “socially liberal but fiscally conservative,” is saying “I’ve got mine, so fuck you [insert poor people, women, LGBTQ+ people, people of color, etc. here] - but not directly!”
It’s enforcing harmful conservative social norms while still claiming to be one of the good guys because you don’t use the n-word or spit on the gay barista at your neighborhood Starbucks.
