The ad hominem attack against religious people in your post ("bigots") demonstrates that your question is actually not "serious" and therefore is not deserving of a response.

It's so weird. I can deal with literal Nazis, pedophile- and CP-apologists, racists, sexists, transphobic assholes, general bigots, anyone, but as soon as they put some passive-aggressive signature on the end of all their comments I go apoplectic.

I really get the impression that terms like SJW or feminanzi or radical feminist really are meaningless these days. Just like ad hominem. Or censorship. They get thrown around all the time by people not really knowing what they mean or knowing their meaning, yet deliberately misusing them for some cheap emotional manipulation. We have some seriously shitty debate ettiquette going on, and Schopenhauer is rotating in his grave.

I agree people shouldn't downvote (edit: merely) because they disagree, but they do, and that's never going to change.

i feel like "shouldn't" is kind of an arbitrary, too. "upvote because it contributes to the conversation" is a rule that gets you That Askreddit Thread With The Rapists. just sending stuff up because it has to do with the question at hand is not necessarily a good way to do things

personally i say vote however you feel like, they don't mean anything. highly upvoted content is usually trash, shitty off-topic jokes get shot through the rafters and things get buried for going against whatever the narrative is at the moment, we're way past votes actually being any indication of quality or contribution. at this point, i say let 'er rip.

Those should be general rules I think, but I'd downvote the "ask a rapist" thread and comments within because I think they are harmful, not merely because I disagree. The rule still works.

And frankly, I don't think those comments were upvoted mostly because people disagreed but thought they were adding to the conversation.

It's because Reddit has a lot of bad people.

[–]FenringSTEMlord with a heart of gold 18

Part of the problem is that "reddiquette" presents the downvote criteria as if they were objective. You're supposed to downvote things that "don't contribute to the conversation", but what exactly does that mean? It's not surprising, then, that people are more likely to feel that posts they agree with are contributing while posts they disagree with aren't.

I don't think that's really the problem, honestly. I don't think the rules are presented as objective. They're meant to be general guidelines, and are deliberately without clear lines between right and wrong.

You're right about the second part of your comment, but I don't think it actually has anything to do with the first part.

[–]IAMA_dragon-AMAI have a flair now. Flairs are cool. 7

Considering that votes' effects are "I want this comment and its user to be more visible/less visible," I think it's much more effective at cutting down unpopular opinions than cutting down poor-quality comments.

Hence why ObamaBot was upvoted quite a bit for a while, despite literally only posting "You're welcome!" as a reply to "Thanks Obama" comments.

his post about a scientific conspiracy against young-earth paleontologists was wrecked.

Wait, what?

Basically, a bunch of radical Christian fundamentalists sent a fossil sample to the University of Georgia for carbon-dating. The lab ran the test, and sent the results back. The Christian fundamentalists started prancing around about how they found a dinosaur fossil that fits their young earth beliefs, and used the paperwork from the lab as proof. While the lab did test the fossil's roughly estimated age, it did not confirm whether the fossil is a dinosaur fossil, so... Draw your own conclusions there.

The lab found out that this group was invoking their name (and thus reputation) and refused to test any more samples for them. So clearly there is a massive conspiracy among the scientific community to shut down "well-meaning" and "genuine" "debate" when "facts" support the fundamentalists.

The real problem is that carbon dating is accurate to something up to like 50k years old. Dinosaur fossils are (a) millions of years older, and (b) petrified. So while you can stick it in the machine and push the button, you might as well be pulling the number out of a hat.

Can I just mention how much I hate the word "tolerance" when it comes to civil rights? Pet peeve, really. It sounds like something you would do to a bad smell or a con-artist uncle. Like imagine if I told someone at work that I tolerate Jewish people.

Tolerance implies that the hate is still there, and that any respectful gestures made are made more out of reluctant obligation than legitimate respect. This is why no civil rights movement ever fights for tolerance, instead fighting for acceptance. Tolerance is just hatred behind a shoddy mask. Acceptance means that the mask is unnecessary, because there is no hate to be hidden.

Acceptance is the goal.

Tolerance is a poor value to throw around as inherently good anyway. Some things deserve to be tolerated, some don't. Being a good person means judging that fairly and wisely, not throwing out tolerance for everything in the world.
