As a programmer I'm not sure I get this kind of thing. I don't really like these companies, but their employees are hardly the ruling class. We have better conditions than most, but we're still forced to choose a master if we want to eat. What am I missing?

Gentrification sucks but so does capitalism, and I don't really see a way to opt out of just one of them. Am I supposed to have stayed in the bumfuck nowhere town I was born in so that people here can have cheaper rent?

These are sincere questions, go easy on me.

I'm also a programmer. I have made a deliberate choice not to move to the bay area, and not to work for companies like google. As people in the tech industry it is important for us to recognize that we are part of a new privileged class. For me this meant working with people involved in social causes, contributing to critiques of the tech industry, and making far less money than I could.

I've been working in tech for 15 yrs with the last 7 in the bay area. First time someone has told me I'm newly privileged. Last time I checked I'm still paycheck to paycheck, rent a shitty apt. and can't afford new shoes when I need them.

Why wouldn't you try to make as much money as you could, and then investing in a charitable project?

I'm sure the working people would prefer a wealthy contributor han a bien pensant with only his hands to show for. Remember, the good samaritans were the wealthiest citizens of Jerusalem!

If you're an ethical altruist and you are giving all but $30k every year to effective charities, then that is great. I only listed the ways that I deal with being part of the new privileged class. It is not the only way. In fact, Engels did exactly as you say and worked as a banker to fund the publication of communist works.

Surely if money gives you options, and not having money means not having said options, it would be better to earn as much as you can earn?

Also, wouldn't it be better from your point of view that an ancom is receiving that money and not, say, some guy from another political viewpoint?

When I talk about how I deal with having this privilege I'm not trying to evaluate the way to maximize commitment to the RevolutionTM . There are many things that matter more to me than money:

  • My time
  • My friends and family
  • My stress level
  • The desire to get my hands dirty with technical "boots on the ground" problems (this is why I became an engineer in the first place).

I have to balance all of that against my desire to create a great local community and a just world. Sometimes money helps with those things, and sometimes it gets in the way. For some people being an ethical altruist to the max works for them. For me, I value my mental health enough to not do that. Just working as much as I do I have trouble with. I need to spend time working on creative and revolutionary projects otherwise I'll fall apart.

I don't get it either. These same people who say "Open borders! Nobody is illegal!" will say "If you make $X/year you're not allowed to move here!!" The only reason these tech kids are moving to Oakland is that San Francisco is too expensive even with their high salaries! That's the real problem people should be looking at. Landlords are jacking up the rent everywhere.
