$100 a week for food? Eating out is stupid expensive.

Check out /r/budgetfood and /r/eatcheapandhealthy to start with, I'm sure there's other good subs in their sidebars.

Use Mint and/or YNAB. Mint is a quick and dirty way to start following your finances, YNAB will be much more helpful in the long term. At the very least read YNAB's four rules.

Post your complete budget if you want. Seems like folks are pretty helpful here.

Eating out is stupid expensive.

Who said he's eating out? Some people like to eat stuff they know is safe, not cheap chemical-filled sugar-packed genetically-modified garbage in their body.

$100 a week on food is crazy high for cooking at home. I've been shouted at before on here because the wife and I spend $400 for two of us a month, and we live in the same city as OP.

/r/EatCheapAndHealthy has a plan for feeding a family of four on $25 a week, and none of that is "cheap chemical-filled sugar-packed genetically-modified garbage" - it's all healthy as fuck.

$100 a week for one person, OP's got to be eating out a lot, or buying a lot of packaged meals. If that link can feed four people on $25, he can make massive savings right there.

No, it really isn't if you have any food allergy or wish to eat paleo/organic/etc. My meat bill is almost 100$ a week if I don't want grain fed, hormone and anti-biotic filled, cage-cow that never sees sunlight. Non-gmo, non-chemically treated produce is quite pricey as well.

Come on dude, food allergies are totally seperate cases, and eating fancy meats and organic foods is a choice to eat expensive, as you're pointing out. If you can afford it, good for you. It's silly however to suggest that's a normal amount to spend on food for the average person, especially someone like OP who's obviously in bad financial shape.

Iirc the US average for feeding a family of four is around $140 a week, or $35 per person - though assuming the two kids eat as one person, that's about $47 per adult. In that context, someone who has no emergency fund shouldn't be spending $100 a week on food, at least not until they're in a better position to do so - then go wild! Organic everything!

If someone is spending $100 on meat a week, even if we assume the meat is $15/lb (way more than most grass fed meat unless it's all steak), that person is eating almost a pound of meat a day. You'd be hard pressed to find a legitimate dietician or doctor (not some sorority girl or crossfit coach with a blog) who would advise that a pound of meat per person per day is ideal for health, no matter how much pasture the cows have. Vegetables (even organic) are crazy cheap compared to meat. even if you eat "paleo" there's no health reason to eat 7 lbs of meat a week.

I personally don't think you have to exclusively eat fancy meats and organic produce to eat healthy, and I personally see it as a financial and lifestyle choice, but it's obvious we're going to disagree on that one, so I'll let it be.

Healthy AND fancy. There are healthy ways to eat that aren't expensive.
