Seen a horribly oppressed transethnic otherkin blog their plight? Wept at how terrible it is for the suffering of multiple systems to go unheard every day? Been unable to even live with the thought of the identities of someone's headmates being cisdenied?

Would you prefer everyone just turn a blind eye to shit like this? That seems like a great way to promote change.
[–]keldoftheisles 15 points16 points17 points  (8 children)
Promoting positive change isn't accomplished by being a little bitch, as you seem to think.
[–]miamiflashfan comment score below threshold-14 points-13 points-12 points  (7 children)
It's a start. Oppression doesn't have to be one blatant act, like racism or segregation. Granted, in this case I'm defending feminists, who aren't by default an oppressed group of people. But regardless...

It's time to stop posting.

I'm sad that the opinions in this thread are actually commonly-held. Then again I feel that way about most of Reddit. Empathy is so goddamn hard.
[–]keldoftheisles 12 points13 points14 points  (4 children)
It's a real burden being more enlightened than all these fundys, huh?
[–]miamiflashfan comment score below threshold-13 points-12 points-11 points  (3 children)
Totally what I'm saying.

That they're way better than us.

Why am I not surprised?

No one is born with blue hair.
[–]miamiflashfan comment score below threshold-12 points-11 points-10 points  (13 children)
What the fuck does that have to do with anything? Who the fuck are you to dictate what other people do with their hair? Do you have a problem with women curling their hair when it's naturally straight? Do you have a problem with women painting their nails? I mean, after all, no one is born with blue fingernails.

calm down dude its just the internet
[–]miamiflashfan comment score below threshold-8 points-7 points-6 points  (1 child)
Why is /r/KotakuInAction so concerned about ethics in gaming journalism? It's just the Internet.
Why does this sub exist and get people so riled up? I mean, Tumblr is just the Internet.
[–]rsresnorI Knight so White you could call me a snow-man 4 points5 points6 points  (0 children)
Because it promotes bigotry. We don't like bigotry.
[–]Jmonster_TW 9 points10 points11 points  (7 children)
Woah there tiger. A lot of SJWs that we've seen posted here have flamboyant dyed hair and it's become a bit of a trope. Like hipsters and skinny jeans and Pabst. That's it.
[–]miamiflashfan comment score below threshold-13 points-12 points-11 points  (6 children)
The problem is when you apply those same stereotypes to feminists and the like, which this sub does quite a bit. SJW has become such an overarching term, and equating ridiculous Tumblr posts to mainstream feminism shows a complete lack of understanding of feminism.
[–]Jmonster_TW 11 points12 points13 points  (5 children)
SJW was always an overarching term, though. Feminists can be SJWs (and frequently are in the stuff posted in this sub) hence the association.
[–]miamiflashfan comment score below threshold-8 points-7 points-6 points  (4 children)
Yes, but a lot of this sub immediately associates feminists with SJWs, and a lot of this sub thinks that absurd Tumblr posts actually represent mainstream feminism.
Like, if this sub actually knew what trigger warnings were for, they wouldn't be joking about it.
[–]Jmonster_TW 12 points13 points14 points  (3 children)
I think a lot of us understand the purpose of trigger warnings, but feel that Tumblrites tend to use them in ridiculous, frivolous ways. The guy who was posted here recently who followed a blog a out space requesting trigger warnings every time that blog posted about space comes to mind.
[–]miamiflashfan comment score below threshold-9 points-8 points-7 points  (2 children)
I have a hard time believing that isn't a troll.
A phrase posted at the beginning of various posts, articles, or blogs. Its purpose is to warn weak minded people who are easily offended that they might find what is being posted offensive in some way due to its content, causing them to overreact or otherwise start acting like a dipshit. Popular on reddit SRS or other places that social justice warriors like to hang out.
That's the Urban Dictionary definition for it, and I think that's generally accepted here. That line of thinking marginalizes victims of sexual assault, war experiences, rape, suicide attempts, psychological torture, etc. who actually need trigger warnings.
Imagine you were abused as a child -- raped, sexually assaulted, manipulated, beaten, whatever -- and you're someone who genuinely appreciates a warning that these topics are about to be discussed, to avoid a post-traumatic flashback or something similar. After all, having empathy for a victim like this is general decency, and a trigger warning takes two seconds to type.
Then you go on Reddit and see the "Its purpose is to warn weak minded people who are easily offended that they might find what is being posted offensive in some way due to its content" attitude towards trigger warnings, and Reddit making a mockery of trigger warnings in general. That's not a very inviting environment.
PS. Thanks for actually having a reasonable conversation with me. Much appreciated.
[–]Jmonster_TW 11 points12 points13 points  (0 children)
Honestly, you can't in good faith assume that some random UD entry is reflective of the attitudes ofthe thousands of people who read and post on this sub any more than we can assume whackjob tumblr feminists represent the opinions of feminists world wide.
Triggerwarnings are important for people who actually need them, in this we're in complete agreement. Thing is that a lot of Tumblrinas who get featured here take this term and use it to describe being peeved or grossed out, which obviously isn't the same as a PTSD flashback.
[–]hey_aaapple 9 points10 points11 points  (0 children)
Trigger warnings are far from good because "triggers" are not clearly agreed upon, they require many to change their rules to appease a minuscule minority, they are exploitable, they go against medical treatment of PTSD, and are made redundant by content warning, NSFW tags and rating systems.
Don't use Urban dictionary for definition, it is a satirical site, just look at many sex related entries. Don't assume people use the Urban dictionary definition to make a point. Learn somehing about the topic before making your point: post tramumatic disorder symptoms are also cured by exposing the patient to triggers in a controlled and safe environment to allow him to cope with them, because real life does NOT have warnings and such. So trigger warnings are NOT going to help in the slightest, they also assume that triggers are content-related instead of more or less random elements like a specific sound.

It's called pattern recognition, my bizarrely aggressive friend. When people make a conscious decision to alter or control their appearance in a certain way, and their aesthetic choices correlate strongly with a group of behaviors or an ideology I find idiotic or dangerous, I am perfectly justified, as a sentient and reasoning entity, to put up my guard and be wary. The correlation between neon hair and saying stupid things is so ridiculously high that I absolutely refuse to be demonized for registering blue hair as a strong potential signifier for idiocy. This doesn't mean I will refuse to listen to such a person as a matter of course, but I will be significantly less surprised if what they say turns out to be insane. This is perfectly rational behavior on my part. If it upsets you, I suggest you get over it.

Wow. By yelling and screaming at everyone in this comment section, you've miraculously destroyed the patriarchy! That's all it took! I thought promoting equality could only be achieved through positive discourse and community outreach. I never even thought of ranging and raving on the internet to solve complex social issues. Nice job! /s
