There has been a lot of claims about the Holocaust being exaggerated since WWII and some of them legitimate with evidence to back them up. Historian Scholars have actually acknowledged and changes have been made to reflect the new evidence while some of the claims have been proven to be false. Even Jewish Scholars such as Michael Shermer admits there have been exaggerations throughout the past but revisions were than made to reflect this. One example being the Auschwitz plaque being replaced from one that read 4 million died to one that read 1 an half million.

There are genuine claims of exaggeration, that's for sure, but you see that with any people that want their cause to be recognized and heard.. It's a matter of weeding out the claims that come from anti-semitism and the actual genuine ones.

Note that not a single Nazi denied the allegations of extermination of the Jews. That is the only proof you need that it happened.
