Know what’s going on here?

Most of you probably don’t… But that’s okay because I am about to fix that problem.

This photoset came out of Ann Arbour, Michigan, in June of 1996. The KKK was having a small demonstration uptown, and hundreds of people showed up to protest. There was obvious tension, the police were trying to hold everyone back as best as they could to prevent the groups from clashing…

Suddenly, chaos erupted when a woman with a megaphone spotted a man with SS tattoos and wearing a Confederate flag shirt making his way through the counter-protest, seemingly trying to get away from the mess and leave the area. The woman quickly alerted the crowd, who immediately began mobbing on the man with sticks and fists, screaming “Kill the Nazi!”.

Enter 18-year old Keshia Thomas… A black woman who had been at the counter protest supporting a women’s rights initiative. So horrified by the hive-mind that had become of the crowd, she leaped to the man’s defense.

She tried to help him get through, but he was beaten down with signs and placards. She then threw her body on top of his to try and protect him from the violence.

This woman is the embodiment of a badass. I’d love for her name to be brought to the foreground again, especially in this divisive time of supposedly tolerant people doing some very intolerant things.

Practice what you preach, and love thine enemy. Keshia is a beautiful soul who must be honoured for her selflessness.

God Bless you, Keshia, wherever you are!
