NRL Round 2 concludes with an interesting affair from Campbelltown Stadium. The Tigers were one of the pre-season favourites for the wooden spoon but go into their second straight match as a short favourite while the Dragons look to dig deep after some key injuries last week.

Chris Lawrence returns for the Tigers in the centres with Kyle Lovett pushed out of the squad. Lock Martin Taupau is in some doubt with a foot injury. The Dragons have named injured duo Josh Dugan and Ben Creagh but neither will play with Peter Mata’utia and Jake Marketo the likely inclusions. Heath L’Estrange may also come into the side on the bench in place of Jack de Belin.

The Dragons hold a 16-13 all-time advantage over the Tigers with the Saints winning 8 of the last 12. The teams met twice last year with the Dragons winning 44-24 and 28-12, both at ANZ. The Dragons have won both matches at Campbelltown but the clubs have not played there since 2002. The last three matches between the sides has topped 40 points. Saints halfback Benji Marshall is Tigers royalty.

The Tigers won their opening round match against the Titans 19-18 but were a little disappointing, relying on a late Pat Richards field goal. They trailed at halftime but won on the back of the forward arm wrestle, averaging 8.52 metres per hitup. The Dragons were defeated 12-4 by the Storm in a game that got away from them. They had 55% of the ball and made just five handling errors but could crack the Storm defence just once.

Luke Brooks and Benji Marshall, the apprentice and the master. Marshall is regarded as one of the Tigers’ greatest ever players and the club is hoping rising talent Brooks will surpass his reputation. They clash on Monday and it will be a compelling affair. Marshall has struggled for a few seasons but he played reasonably in the Dragons’ season opener. Brooks has shown patches of brilliance but needs to bring some consistency to his game. The halfback that steps up will have a huge influence on this game.

The Wests Tigers are 4-4 (3-5 ATS) at Campbelltown over the last three seasons while they are 8-9 ATS at their suburban home grounds. The Dragons are 11-18 (14-15 ATS) with a 16-13 over record away from their suburban home venues. The Tigers are 6-3 (4-5 ATS) as a favourite since 2013. The Tigers are 1-6 (2-5 ATS) on Monday nights over the last three seasons while the Saints are 4-5 straight and ATS. The Saints are 4-9 ATS when keeping opponents to under 12 points the previous week. The Saints have covered 5 of their last 6 under Ashley Klein while the road team is 36-27 ATS and 33-30 outright with him over the last three years.

The Saints are certainly the value in this as the outsider typically is when two bad teams are playing. There is no question the loss of Creagh and Dugan hurts the Dragons but the Tigers have a very thin lineup and look vulnerable in most areas across the park. The experienced halves pairing of Marshall and Widdop just need to steer the ship, play it smart and the Dragons will be away for season 2015.
