I had a heated discussion with friends of mine after watching this film!
I was dying throughout the film watching Chris Evans' character be the classic white cis-male colonial douchebag "hero"... leading the group. His style of leadership included suppression of Octavia Spencer's character, not wanting the black woman to fight. He didn't pay attention to Kang-ho Song's character or his motives - often wouldn't even wait to listen to the translation of his words, and just talk over him. etc ETc ETc etC
In many blockbuster films these days I am so tired of having the "black side-kick", or the "asian genius" consulting the main character...Patriarchal and white supremacist feminist binaries oppress our black woman and asian masterminds.
Chris Evans' character kept leading the group to ruin, and i was so frustrated to see a film head down this path, like so many other big-budget hollywood flicks have... I'm so tired of this unjust typology!

BUT THEN TO MY RELIEF AND UTMOST SATISFACTION... He dies. His ignorance killed him. The minorities win, and start again. A woman and a black kid, are the start of humanity.
The whole movie flipped gave us a radical (and much needed) message. The advice of the Inuit was the truth of the matter.
Did anyone else see this theme? or share feelings? or feel completely different about the allegory of this film? DISCUSS.

This happens a lot. I'm sick of the constant pandering to the white male patriarchy. The other gender and minorities can be good leaders too.

If you're sick of watching white heroes in a predominantly white industry then can I suggest a few Nigerian movies or perhaps Bollywood movies to satisfy your need for "POC" heroes?

Naw, we'd rather Hollywood just recognize that America is FULL of non-whites and stop the white supremacist *beep* We're NOT Nigerian OR East Indian, we're American. Just curious, are you Jewish?

The fact of the matter is movies with non-white characters don't do as well as movies with white main characters. To say that movies with white main characters = white supremacy is ridiculous, white main character movies make bigger profits. Not Jewish.

If you knew how to do a basic google search you'd know that LITERALLY every single race is overrepresented in hollywood, except latins.
Jews, followed by blacks, are the most overrepresented, THEN whites, and asians barely managing to be overrepresented. All at the cost of latins.
So you should be demanding that jewish actors and black actors stop stealing roles from latins.
But in reality you're just looking for another reason to hate white people.
