I've said nigga to friends, say it when i'm rapping along in songs. I don't see how its offensive for me to use that word in the ways that I use it. But to me going up to random people saying whatup nigga is like going around saying whatup dude/friend/buddy/boy/son, and I just don't do that. Its like I use slang when I talk with my friends not when I;m talking to strangers just because they happen to be black. If they're around the same age as me, i'll put a yo in the front of whatever i'm gonna say but its never "yo nigga excuse me you know where IHOP's at?"

I can't stop you from saying that shit in the privacy of your own home, but if somebody calls you out on it, you aren't allowed to say "i don't see how it's offensive" You just better shut the hell up. But if you were to say that shit around me, we'd have a problem. I don't care what your black friends got to say about it.

This is kinda how i feel about it. Like I might sing along to a particular verse that has "nigga" in it or say it ironically to a friend but if someone had an actual problem I would a) stop it and b) not argue.

I'm perfectly fine with that. If it's in a song, sing the fucking song, but don't use that shit in your regular speech around me. I'm not gonna punch you in the throat, I'm gonna correct you, educate you, and if you can't realize the error in your ways, then I'm gonna punch you in the throat.

Punch first explain later

I've given up on trying to correct people. The words use is rampant in white teen america. In the suburbs where I live a black kid, like so African he knows the city in Africa that his mom's from, just moved in to an almost all white with some Asian, and latinos school. My friends and I befriended him because he likes hip-hop and basketball so we got similar interests. And out of the blue half my friends start using the n-word around him. He tries to correct people and I can tell it hurts him but he's super peaceful so he doesn't do much about it. Also an open question to anyone, can a columbian use the n-word?

so African he knows the city in Africa that his mom's from

wtf? why would he not know what city his mom is from?

This.

People who aren't black but get passes from their friends or whatever need to understand something.

1: Even if you get passes from your friends you know you look/sound corny as fuck when you do this right?

2: If that word is a part of your lexicon you better be prepared to deal with the worst case scenario

e.g. Be prepared to fight someone at any given time over it.

Yep this is pretty much how I view it. My black friends don't care, but they're also incredibly chill and laidback. I'm not stupid enough to think everyone thinks like that. Plus, it's a shitty word, I don't think anyone should really be using it, much less me. I think it's just douche-y, like white people that use it just to come off as cool but you just sound like an idiot.

like white people that use it just to come off as cool but you just sound like an idiot.

That's like 95% of the reason they use it. (The other 5% being people who are a product of their environment.)

If they knew that nobody thought they looked or sounded cool I'm pretty sure they'd all shut the fuck up.

you just better shut the hell up

This way of thinking is ridiculous. White people are allowed a voice. Anyone's allowed to say "I don't see how it's offensive", because then they'll get it explained to them why it is offensive.

Sorry, but this isn't tumblr nazism. People with opinions that we find repellent shouldn't "just shut the fuck up".

I don't subscribe to tumblr ideology, but if someone asks you to not say a racial slur, then stop fucking saying it. Don't ask why they think it's offensive.

Because of the color of his skin? Racist.

Id watch that man you never know when your gonna mess that up. Personally, Im not okay with that but I wouldnt fight you over it or anything, i wouldn't even say anything but you'd be on the mental shit list. Im not a fan of the word in any context but when white people start popping it, hurts a little.

I say it if it's in a song and I'm with friends, in public you know I'm sayin "neighbor" tho

But how do you listen to rap or hip hop? I mean even chilish gambino uses it and he's like the white rap gateway drug.

i'd really like to know why it hurts? If some white dude is talking to his black friend and they're using it, does the black kid get a pass because he's black? I remember reading Junot Diaz and in his book Oscar Wao he uses nigger to describe his Domincan character, but it was always spelled with the er. I remmeber feeling off about him using the word with the ER at the end.

I'm not black, but I would probably say it would hurt some people because many, many black people have heard that word used towards them in a derogatory way. Its a word thats been used to hurt people just because of their skin color. They decided to reclaim it, and use it positively. That doesn't mean that white people also get to do the same thing. Thats just my opinion anyway.

I understand this point my point was if, i someone growing up around the word, hearing it, using it with a variety of cultures and races, should I not be allowed to use it because of my skin color. I think there are nuances to it like upbringing and your own urban culture but in public its best to defer to common courtesy and not use the word if someone takes offense. Would I use it to refer to someone I didn't know, no. But I also wouldn't speak to them with any slang. I don;t use slang when i speak to my grand mother, I won't use it with strangers./

okay i get what you're saying. if you get like a "pass" from your friends to use it then cool but its wrong to assume that every black person is cool with it, so its best to only use it with your friends, if at all.

Did Childish Gambino tell you to say it? He's using it in context of HIS experience in HIS music.

i'd really like to know why it hurts?

it shouldn't matter why it hurts, if you're not gonna stop saying it.

I'm not, but its always nice to understand other people's POVs

Are you or your friends black?

yes some are. I'm not. White.

I mean my black friends don't care if people refer to them as "my nigga" or something (I don't personally, just no reason to), but I definitely can see how it's offensive for a white guy to be saying it to another white guy.

true i can dig that. I have friends that just aren't into hip hop, so its really with my other friends that i say it its honestly sort of like the language just comes out. I dated this black chick who questioned me once about it when I was on the phone, I was like why do you find it offensive if I'm talking to my boys like that? I was like we've been dating a few months now you think I'm some racist throwing around words to oppress people? She started calling me nigga after that. But she did make the point thats its more annoying when its white people doing it to other white people, seems like they're posing, saying it to sound tough she said. Its funny because I think that same thing when I see the asian dudes in the gym using it. Buncha Gangam style looking niggas callin each other nigga. But i think the more you listen to a certain type of language the more in becomes part of your everyday speech. SO sometimes it may not be posing they may just listen to a lot of that shit being said.

Yeah we aren't on the same wavelength at all, I don't think that's chill at all. It's pretty stupid, immature, and just ignorant to be white and throw the n-word around to your white friends while on the phone with your black girlfriend, especially if you haven't even discussed it first, which it sounds like you didn't.

Yall sensitive as fuck.

If thinking white people shouldn't say nigga is being offensive, then yup, I'm a huge pussy.

Most people grew up in an age where the word 'nigga' was used in every context except to refer to its original meaning. If you brought an alien to earth, and asked them what the word 'nigga' meant based on every day conversation, they'd very likely assume it means 'friend'.

Thinking white people shouldn't say nigga, because they're white, is the very definition of racism.

"These are the words black folks are allowed to use, and these are the words white folks are allowed to use"

What kind of fucked up world do you live in when a racially charged and sensitive word is assumed to mean friend? The fact that you think it's just straight up racism because you can't say something due to race means you don't understand the social ramifications and historical context behind the word. You really should educate yourself before throwing out the word racism around.
