Strange, nowhere does it mention this here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Square_%28algebra%29

But the google definition does say "make square or rectangular; give a square or rectangular cross section to. "you can square off the other edge" https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&rlz=1C1CHFX_enUS526US526&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=what+does+squared+mean

It's a confusing terminology, and as a math major I really don't like it.

"Square" is a verb and a noun. To square something is the angles thing. Square the noun means having equal sides and angles.

Square the adjective can mean either a square shape, or having an angle of 90 degrees. Or it means you're totally unhip, man.
