Essendon Bombers look set to have a stronger team available to them on Friday night with six key players included in their squad of 29.
The Bombers have welcomed back Brendon Goddard, David Zaharakis, Joe Daniher, Zach Merrett, Adam Cooney and Patrick Ambrose as well as James Gwilt and Orazio Fantasia for their practice match against Greater Western Sydney at Spotless Stadium.
Making way for those eight players are stand-in skipper Paul Chapman, rookie-listed Jake Long and top-up players Aaron Heppell, Sam Tagliabue and Anthony McDonald-Tipungwati.
However, the Dons will still be significantly under-strength for the match with the Giants with more than a third of their squad still comprising of top-up players.
The Bombers will be without captain Jobe Watson, Dyson Heppell, Cale Hooker, Jake Carlisle, Michael Hurley, Dustin Fletcher, Michael Hibberd, Brent Stanton, Tom Bellchambers, Jason Winderlich, Courtenay Dempsey, David Myers, Heath Hocking, Ben Howlett, Mark Baguley and Travis Colyer.
Earlier on Wednesday, Watson stopped by to have a chat with Triple M’s Hot Breakfast for the first time this year.
The star Bomber spoke about Kevin Sheedy’s return to the club and how the team’s pre-season training has been chugging along amongst other things.
Essendon premiership coach Kevin Sheedy has left his role at the Greater Western Sydney Giants to re-join the Bombers in a general manager role.
Sheedy, who won four premierships in his time at Windy Hill, announced he would leave the Giants to return to his old club.
The 67-year-old was the Giants’ inaugural coach before handing over the position to Leon Cameron in 2013 and joined the board at the expansion club.
Sheedy said he was extremely excited to be re-joining the Bombers.
“The Essendon Football Club holds a special place for me and my family, and I’m looking forward to be coming back to the club and working with so many driven and dedicated people,” Sheedy said in an Essendon statement.
“It was a difficult decision to leave GWS but I am proud of the work I have done there and what we were able to achieve in a relatively short period of time and in a particularly tough market.
“The time to move on and spend more time with my family in Melbourne was important to me, as was the opportunity to go back to an organisation where I spent 27 years.”
Essendon chief executive Xavier Campbell said the club looked forward to welcoming Sheedy “home”.
“We all look forward to welcoming Sheeds home to the Essendon family,” Campbell said.
