Some time ago I posted this: http://redd.it/2w8pca
You were all very helpful and supportive and even pointed out that the smoke detector wasn't just a smoke detector. I'm very grateful.
Now I've had a great week. No mr. creepy in sight, no gifts on my door step, no strange calls to my work place. Awesome, I thought, the police must have talked to him and scared him away. I started to go running again in the mornings, stopped looking over my shoulder on the way to the bus stop.
Then today I got magazines in the post that I didn't want (about hunting and fishing) and books (of a sexual nature) I didn't order. I phone the company that sent them and I'm told that I've signed up online to recive them. I won't have to pay if I don't want them, but I have to send the stuff back.
A few hours ago I got a phone call. The person ask me if I want to take part in a study by answering 10 questions. I agree but soon realize it's him. He is trying to hide his accent, but the nature of the questions and the fact that he is a horrible actor makes me realize that it's him. But at least he is stalking from a distance now.
Just wanted to update on what's happening. I'll be contacting the police again, and see if they can maybe help me somehow.

This guy is persistent and terrifying. Please, please don't let your guard down. I understand it's incredibly frustrating that this asshole gets to fuck with your entire life, but the old adage stands true: better safe than sorry.
Can you change your cell phone number? That would be a small start.
Also, just keep checking in with the police. The squeaky wheel gets the grease - every time you have record of a new, inappropriate contact/interaction, update them. Make sure they know what's going on. Build the biggest case you can against this guy.
Thanks for updating us, and please stay safe.
[–]sugarisbadforme[S] 10 points11 points12 points  (6 children)
Thanks, I will.
I just don't understand why he is stalking me. I have never had any realationship with him, don't even know him. Aren't stalkers supposed to be ex boyfriends/husbands or at least stalking someone who is famous? Why me? That is driving me nuts.
[–]MadeAProfile 10 points11 points12 points  (0 children)
Hey, just to chime in here having had a weirdly unsettling experience myself this week with a stranger (I'll elaborate below) but the police here in the UK suggested keeping a diary of every single thing that occurs both written and online (for the metadata and timeline if online - I.e. reddit etc) and to chronicle how it's affecting you emotionally too as that will help with prosecution. If you can prove that this is an ongoing campaign that is affecting your physical and mental health, as well as your safety, you have further grounds to push for inprisonment and restraining order. Stay safe. Fuck this guy, what a total fucker!
My recent creeper experience: my current housemate mentioned a few times he's heard the door knocker (we don't have a doorbell) go and when's he's come downstairs no one has been home. On Monday I was, unusually, working from home on my desktop downstairs with my back to the front door. I heard the letterbox open, assumed it was the postman until I heard shuffling and one of my cats begin to do this odd low body growl (THANKS GUARD CAT!) I turned around and there was a guy I've seen hanging around my gym peering through the letterbox filming on his iphone. I stand up, say "EXCUSE ME?!"; he calmly replies "Hello" and takes off down the street. The police arrive within minutes, no sign of him; however, they interview the neighbours who claim they've seen him hanging around the house during odd hours (the middle of the day, late a night etc). They've assigned an incidence report to the whole issue (added to the withheld number calls I've been getting at all hours and the fact that he's apparently, upon investigation, not a member at my gym!) and essentially said the above - keep a chronicle of everything. To simply have a legitimate timeline of all the events, as well as a record of the emotional toll it's taking, will stand up in court when pursuing it further. They also mentioned that in cases of random stalking (as in, not an ex-boyfriend or partner etc) to change all numbers and only give contacts out to trusted individuals.

My stalker was a kindly-looking older gentleman who lived in my apartment complex. I played with his dog. He started waiting outside my door in the mornings and evenings, and propositioned me for sex. There's no telling what causes someone to fixate on you. The only thing you can do is whatever it takes to keep yourself safe.
[–]1400cal 4 points5 points6 points  (0 children)
Not all the time, which kind of makes this a bit more unsettling. Keep your guard up. If you have the chance maybe get your locks changed at your house and if you have a decent relationship with your neighbors ask them to keep an eye out.
[–]_sparrow 4 points5 points6 points  (0 children)
Just to add to recording every inappropriate interaction or contact that this man has with you; even if you don't have anything damning enough to charge him with stalking you there may be a good chance that you can file for harassment. I don't know what the laws are like where you live, but I live in the US, and that was how I was finally able to get help from the police when I had a stalker. He hadn't done anything threatening, and there wasn't much I could link specifically to him because we attended school together, but he had called and followed me enough times that it finally classified as harassment and the police had some legal grounds to tell him to leave me alone.
[–]twistedfork 3 points4 points5 points  (0 children)
Aren't stalkers supposed to be ex boyfriends/husbands or at least stalking someone who is famous?
Stalkers usually feel like they have some kind of relationship with their victim. Even though YOU don't know him, HE feels like he knows you. Please go back to the police with ALL of the things he's done.
[–]hopeful_dachshund 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
You don't need the police to get a restraining order - just go straight to your local courthouse and file one. You can call the self help center, if they have one, or just google "how to file a restraining order in ___ county." Then, the next time he sends stuff to the house, or calls, or has someone else call, etc, the cops can arrest him.
[–]Spyhop 11 points12 points13 points  (0 children)
Holy shit. That is friggin terrifying.
If you haven't yet done so, maybe speak with a lawyer. I can't think of a way to pro-actively do something about this, as the police have already told you, but a lawyer might know.
[–]idoneredditalreadyy 3 points4 points5 points  (0 children)
Holy crap, just read your first post, this is insane. I had no idea spy smoke detectors existed! What kind of 'study' was he taking part in? If he gives that excuse again you should say "didn't you read the article about a study that said there are too many studies? I will not contribute." But seriously, I hope this ends as quickly as possible for you.
[–]MattsterReddit 6 points7 points8 points  (1 child)
Never read the original post until now, good to know that things are getting a bit better. I'm sorry to hear that he's resurfaced.
You've stated that you've deactivated your Facebook, which is probably a good idea for the time being. Do you use any other Social Media platforms that he could be checking out? How secure are your email accounts?
Since he's dropped off the package with the smoke detector/spy camera, we know that he knows where you live. Have you taken a look in and around your house for any hidden cameras/microphones? Is it possible that he's gotten into the house at some point?
Since you take the bus, I'm taking a wild guess that you don't have a car. If you do, I advise checking it inside and outside for any trackers.
[–]sugarisbadforme[S] 4 points5 points6 points  (0 children)
No, I don't own a car, I just rent if I need one. I have sometimes in the past left a key hidden outside my door, for my friend to find and let herself in. I live in Scandinavia, in an area that's considered pretty safe and low crime, and I never thought it was risky. Now I see that it might have been. Haven't left the key out recently though, for obvious reasons. I have checked the house and haven't found anyhing.
[–]schmegus 4 points5 points6 points  (11 children)
The phone is huge see if the police can use the phone company to find him, also if you can, try to get a dog. They're great at deterring intruders, you can take it running with you just make sure to get a protective breed like a Shiva (I think thata what It's called) or a German shepherd, something that will protect you. Also the company of a dog is wonderful. Oh, you live in a flat right? Tell your landlord and your neighbors that way if they see someone suspicious they can report it
[–]sugarisbadforme[S] 4 points5 points6 points  (10 children)
Thanks for the advise. My dad got several rhodesian ridgebacks, I could keep one of them at my place maybe. I think my boss would let me bring a dog to work as well, shouldn't be a problem. I'll consider that.
The problem for police isn't to find him, I know who he is and where he lives now - the problem is there's nothing they can do. Yet. Our laws suck when it comes to this - the policeman told me "sorry, but I can't do anything unless you can prove that he is a threat to you".
And I can't actually prove anything. The smoke detector - I can't prove that he send/bought it. The other "gifts" - same thing.
Showing up at random places where I am isn't a crime. The outburst at work place is the closest thing to proof of violent reactions that I got, but that's not enough. It's infuriating and exhausting.
[–]ElleBound 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
I grew up with a ridgeback - great dogs and usually very protective :)
[–]schmegus 3 points4 points5 points  (3 children)
Oh also I told my sisters this, look into bear mace, its stronger and most of the time It's dyed orange so they can identify the bear, and don't buy something that you have deep in your purse have it accessible, plus the orange dye makes it easy for police
[–]sugarisbadforme[S] 1 point2 points3 points  (2 children)
That sounds great. I think it might not be allowed over here, but I'll see if I can get some anyway. I'm sick of this.
[–]schmegus 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
Damn, and your English is good. Hopefully the dog works out!
[–]sugarisbadforme[S] 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Normally my English is (somewhat) better - but my brain is too focused on freaking out to pay attention to grammar...bleh.
[–]thelastjuju 1 point2 points3 points  (1 child)
the problem is there's nothing they can do.
ahh our good old boys in blue! Quick to remind you.. there's nothing we can do!
Scary truth is that almost no smaller, rural, or even suburban police depts have real "detectives" that had specialized training and advanced degrees in criminology or anything. At least in the US, it's usually just a cop that passed a written test one day so the department can say they have a detective or "criminal investigator".. but that person lacks the credentials, experience, and passion for the work.
[–]sugarisbadforme[S] 3 points4 points5 points  (0 children)
The police are being very nice and understanding but also clear on the fact that they can't do anything at the moment. The offered to talk to him and let him know that I don't want any contact. I thought it helped, but then it started again.
I do feel they are taking me seriously, but our laws suck. Stalker guy gets more right to integrity than I got right to feel safe.
[–]schmegus 1 point2 points3 points  (1 child)
What about harassment, he is constantly calling you under fake names, couldn't that be qualified as harassment of some sort? I'm sure you've already looked into this, also dog run = better workout that's a win win for you :)
[–]sugarisbadforme[S] 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
The phone is pre paid (is that even the right word for it in English?) and isn't bought in anyones name. I can't prove that he is the caller.
[–]Fleeing_Mice_Terrors [score hidden]  (0 children)
Expect the dog to be more of a deterrent and an alert rather than relying on it for protection. While it would be great if the dog protected you, a lot of dogs actually might not (too scared or other reasons), even breeds typically thought to be protectors. Please make sure to take other measures for your safety!
[–]A_Single_AID 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
You should write a book about this
[–]fauxphantom 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
I'm really wondering how he'd explain himself when he showed up to your work..
[–]kissmyasphalt_234 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
I won't have to pay if I don't want them, but I have to send the stuff back.
wait, what? how are they going to force you to pay for something like that (or waste your time sending it back when it's not your problem in the first place)?
[–]yourethestoryofme 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Sorry to hear about the stalker, but I just wanted to enlighten you about the unsolicited things you've received in the mail. Federal law states that anything you get in the mail that you did not order is yours to legally keep for free. The company has no legal ground to charge you for it or demand its return.

Please read The Gift of Fear by Gavin DeBecker - it provides awesome insight in trusting your gut in these types of situation. Your intuition has been spot on so far - keep following it. Good luck, I wish you weren't going through this!

what is this accent you keep talking about? what accent is it that makes it so distinct and unique to him.
I hope this isint the same as Jenny and Zack
[–]sugarisbadforme[S] 1 point2 points3 points  (1 child)
Jenny and Zack? He speaks with an accent that's very, very local. Only found within a small (some might say isolated) part of Sweden. Not many people speak it and it's so distinct you can't mistake it for anything else.
