Was the artist just like, "I'm going to make the very least wooden things ever out of wood. Water, hair, fabric, and butts. It's perfect."

Wood? Wood's easy. Try marble.

(Wood's NOT easy, but I'll take any excuse to link to great sculptures)

Sculptures like this never cease to amaze me. I can't even mold Play-Doh into a recognizable form and these artists can sculpt something so intricate and flawless from marble. My favorite is Michelangelo's Pietà. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piet%C3%A0_%28Michelangelo%29

I saw "The Rape of Proserpina" sculpture at the Villa Borghese in Rome last year. It was nothing short of amazing. I can't believe the amount of life this artist was able to bring into a piece of marble almost 400 years ago. I went all over Rome checking out museums including the Vatican of course and the Villa Borghese was by far my favorite. And, there were multiple sculptures of this high quality in the museum.

How big is it in real life ? In the link OP provided, some of the sculptures look 6ft tall but I scrolled down and it looks like they 8in sculptures hanging on the wall...

This was my question too. I kind of want it to be big. Either way the detail is impressive but I would love to see what it feels like in person.

"She gave me wood". Okay, good work everyone. We can now focus on useful comments.

Edit: I have a sense of humor just like the rest of you lovable bastards, I just wanted to get rid of the lowest hanging fruit that always end in follow up comments like "ahhhh I thought I was original" or "you beat me to it". I know there's not always a ton to comment about art, but if your going to make a pun it better be a good one or at least follow up with something pertaining to the art/artist to protect the value of your comment. For everyone wondering what was deleted it was all very low hanging fruit, you didn't miss anything.

Honestly, between not being allowed to make snarky comments, and not being allowed to "leave comments like 'That's great', 'Nice picture', 'Amazing'," there isn't really a lot of room to say anything in this sub.

[–]AnthropomorphizedHatArtist - Mixed Media[M] 48

There's a difference between snarky comments and comments like '10/10 wood fuck'. The comment section is for discussion of the work/artist and critiques, I know that doesn't appeal to everyone but it was decided on in the past and works well.

As for not leaving comments like 'amazing', that's simply because voting does the same thing, we don't need 20 of the same comments.

If you think these rules should be changed then feel free to either start a discussion thread or contact the mods where you can get feedback from the lot of us.

Thanks.

Why? This place was a complete cesspool before we implemented changes. Now it's only a slight cesspool.

A subreddit with "[deleted]" being the most prominent comment is actually scaring people into not saying anything. Come on, its like this. We all have to say "i love you" even though the other person knows that. Then why would "amazing" "awesome" be bad?

[–]AnthropomorphizedHatArtist - Mixed Media[M] 16

The top comments aren't saying 'amazing', it's a load of pun threads that either barely or don't mention the work, that's why they're removed. Normally if a comment is extended as to why they like it, even if it's just a few words, then it won't be removed.

A subreddit with "[deleted]" being the most prominent comment is actually scaring people into not saying anything.

This is unfortunate but there's no way of hiding deleted comments for people automatically (probably for the best).

First time in this sub. Honest question. Why do the moderators not allow the foundation of democracy that makes Reddit what it is dictate which comments are found at the top and which are buried at the bottom? If your community doesn't like "amazing" or "beautiful" type comments, wouldn't the community voting take care of it? And if the community votes those comments to be at the top of the thread, isn't that where is belongs regardless of what the few moderators have in mind for what this sub should be?

[–]AnthropomorphizedHatArtist - Mixed Media 19

Why do the moderators not allow the foundation of democracy that makes Reddit what it is dictate which comments are found at the top and which are buried at the bottom?

These rules were voted for by the community and have been agreed on numerous times. The route here was democratic and we're enforcing what that process wanted.

If your community doesn't like "amazing" or "beautiful" type comments, wouldn't the community voting take care of it?

You'd think so but that's interestingly not how voting works on this site. There's some bizarre microcosm of psychology.

Not sure how the cleverness or tastefulness of a comment determines whether it is worthy of being considered art critique but okkkkay.

Mod teams are better off sticking to removing comments that blatantly violate rules or are harassing and stay out of the game of determining what is valuable or not.

While I do appreciate this artist and their work, I have read over the guidlines and there is nothing in the "don't" section about bad puns, you state that it was decided on in the past and works well. Fantastic! but if everyone knows that it would be less of a hassle for you to delete them, because then they would know not to post it in the first place. To be honest, I love the fact that this work of art was carved from wood, and I would never in a million years be able to do this myself, but the first thought that came to mind was infact something to the effect of "10/10 wood fuck". Just a suggestion to put it in the guidlines. Thats all :)

[–]AnthropomorphizedHatArtist - Mixed Media 1

I really don't think criticism should be on this subreddit, I mean it should be allowed, but it really shouldn't be the only thing expected. Especially when no one has any means of verifying artistic credentials.

For an art subreddit to censor people's comments based on their crudity is the height of hypocracy. It's to deny a whole wing of human nature. Art is as much an expression of human nature as a dick or sex joke. To deny one aspect of our nature is to deny everything.

Thank you so much.

I'm impressed not only by the craftsmanship, but especially the posing. They look so ... normal.

Great stuff. I'm not sure I get the point of posing some of the figures in front of mirrors, though (assuming those are mirrors and not just mirror-image statues?) Seems a bit clumsy compared to the delicacy of the rest of the work.

Edit: Apparently they are not mirrors, in which case it makes sense and is actually kind of awesome.

I.... I don't think those are mirrors....

i agree. look at the shadows near the legs..it's going in the same direction , ie not being reflected..also i'm on ambien an the scrollin background on top is weirding me out

Uh...so that those of us viewing them as 2D photos can see front and back? Also, they're people acting 'normally' (ie. not posing) and people do look in mirrors pretty regularly

A few of them do use mirrors, and those specifically seems to be comments on body image or general thoughts on appearances. E.g., the girl looking at herself sideways in the mirror is in the pose one might adopt while trying on a pair of pants. Another shows a girl who looks physically healthy critiquing herself topless in the mirror. The sculptures are interacting with the mirrors, which I think makes them -- not clumsy -- but more alive.

Edit: Having read up on the artist a little bit, I have learned those are actually two mirror-image sculptures separated by a wall, as other redditors have suggested. That said, the same reasoning applies. I'm impressed that he was able to create the appearance of a mirror so seamlessly.

Those are actually mirror-image sculptures, not real reflections. The lighting/shadows don't match up as they would with reflections.

The separate figure "mirror" carvings can be seen here: http://www.artforum.it/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/MG_2984b.jpg

I immediately assumed it was to illustrate someone critically looking at their body in a mirror. One young woman leaning to look at how slim her middle is, and another woman, seemingly a bit older, maybe looking at how she has aged, maybe contemplating the life she's had so far.

I don't know if they are actual mirrors in the sculpture or if they are actually two mirror-image figures cleverly set up to look like mirrors.

As it turns out these are not mirrors but mirror-image statues, so I expect there are small subtle differences between the two statues that are important to understanding the work.

However, if they were mirrors, then the artist's intention is to make highly realistic wooden representations of people looking into mirrors. Why? Because he can? To make them seem more human? To play off of concepts of self-image and vanity? That's fine, but using a mirror with a 3D artwork is kind of a freshman art-student gimmick. This guy seems more sophisticated than that. It's much more powerful to actually make two separate statues looking at each other as if in a mirror, than to use a mirror.

Or to put it another way: The artist has gone to all that effort to create these highly realistic wooden statues, each of which must have taken him weeks or months to carve -- but then he drops them in front of a mirror, which he bought at some store? If you use the mirror in the work, then the mirror is as much a part of the piece as the wooden statue, and overall it diminishes the masterful craftsmanship. It gives the impression that the artist didn't really think it through.

Use two statues, though, and you double down on the "master craftsman" impression. Make two nearly identical, but mirror-image realistic wooden statues? That's bloody hard, and damn impressive.

Its a good piece, but the ass crack and dimples are too well defined, I think.

There are bikini bottoms with seams vertically down the middle of the back that accentuate the crack in this manner.

It's above the bikini that's the problem. It's not bad, by any means, but it does seem a little crude compared to some of his other stuff.

It's seems like this is based off of a real person. Maybe this is what it really looked like.

If you look at the image on his site of the same front view of this scene carved from the front view, it's more apparent that he's going for realism here.

I see what you're getting at, but is it crude to depict the reality of what he saw?

Edit:

Now that I'm thinking about it, I was assuming you were using the word "crude" to imply "hyper-sexualized" (because we're talking about butt-cracks).

As in: Crude (adj): "(of language, behavior, or a person) offensively coarse or rude, especially in relation to sexual matters."

But it's very possible that you meant "crude" in the sense of "less delicately carved".

If that's the case then my comment is null!

I think this sculpture is actually tiny, like these ones. That might explain why some of the details are a little more crude than they would be on a full-scale sculpture.
