she's right. when Hollywood does that type of thing there's clearly an agenda and it is not an artistic one.

Big Hero Six did it fine.
They merged it, but now you got Fantastic Four with the Storm siblings different races. The only reason for that is because they were too afraid to make Reed Richards black and wanted to market to African Americans.

I haven't researched it but it seemed obvious to me Jordan was cast because he worked with the director in Chronicle and he should be fine as Human Torch. The others were cast based on the comic characters rather than trying to find a black Reed and/or black Sue.

Some characters races were changed.
Yep, Races were changed. and powers. and personalities. and the overall plot and.... Yeah, Big Hero Six is close to the Super Mario Bros movie in terms of adaptation loyalty.

Disney did to Big Hero 6 what Disney does with all of their movies. They Disnyfied the fuck out. Was still a great movie, but to call it Big Hero 6 is just kind of well... dishonest in my opinion. Owell, not like any other Disney movies are anywhere near their origin story.

On the backdrop of San Francisco and Tokyo merged together.

Big Hero Six technically white-washed the comic.

How's that?
picking characters for diversity sake instead of the character? she hints at two points. one of them is staying true to the comic book characters, but fair enough if you think that movies should deviate from comic books depictions and storylines to become their own film (i think they're great sometimes, unless they take away the essence of a long established character). the thing about Hollywood is that when they put out movies with characters with long consolidated histories (in Michelle's case she refers to the caucasian ones i guess), and sometimes the histories have deeply cultural roots or gender traits, it feels very patronizing to minorities such as herself when minorities that don't even look the part or resemble the part play the role, thus creating an uneasy feeling that it's really done for diversity sake. not everybody feels the same and i think she's right to represent a large portion of minorities that feel patronized when they are not given their own identity but are just there to fill in a role for diversity sake. now, that's not to say that every movie with a minority playing a traditionally white character is questionable (Idris Elba in Thor was badass, the new Johnny Storm looks fine, the new Aquaman i can see making more sense than the comic book one honestly etc), but there are cases where its just obvious and unnecessary and need to be recognized.

Like when they had a white guy play Moses? Or Bane?
Bane's white as hell in the comics. Hispanic, but with an English father and fairly light skin. Moses is white by some definitions.
yea Tom Hardy sounded super hispanic in the movie, Moses im sure looked exactly like christian fucking bale. also that prince of Persia? totally white.
Idris Elba in Thor was badass
Idris was a waste. He did fine with the role but he's pretty close to the top of shoehorned.

What makes it clear that an actor has been picked "for diversity's sake?"
take the reaction towards the new Johnny Storm character for example, i personally have no problem or any clear cut judgement towards the character in context of the movie, cause it's not even out yet. but there are comments on both sides going bananas on how great or horrible the situation because of the actor's race, not quality, race. both sides. i personally think its racist to judge an actor by their race instead their performance. plus, is it really unheard of that studio representatives outright admit that they have decisions made for diversity sake? i'm pretty sure there are sociological studies done on these things as well.
I think people would not consider the new Johnny Storm as a token black guy for diversity sake if they made his sister black as well. I understand adoption, and stuff of that nature (I was adopted) and how it can diversify a family when you say, "this is my sister/brother" despite not looking the same, but it makes people uneasy when only one sibling is black, and makes them think, "oh they just made him black to diversify rather than, hey he deserves the part, and because they're siblings maybe we should give the role of Sue Storm to a black actress as well."
I honestly found changing Johnny Storm's race to be offensive and stupid. They completely flipped the character's background because they wanted to pander to audiences for diversity.
They basically did it because they were cowards and couldn't make Reed Richards black. They didn't want to portray an interracial relationship, or god forbid a black character that's intellectual.
Dr. Storm in the movie seems black and intelligent.
I can't get past him being Freddy from House of Cards.
Stop rehashing 60s propaganda. They could do an all black Fantastic Four or they could do an interracial relationship and there is absolutely no hesitation in having intellectual blacks (you can ask Morgan if you don't believe me) but it seems pretty obvious Torch was cast based on director-actor friendship and the others were cast based on the actual comic characters.
Either way it's not done on artistic merit.
I didn't say it doesn't happen. I'm just curious about what makes a case clear cut and what doesn't.
There really is nothing definitive that'll point in either direction. Any argument would just be embedded in speculation. Take Johnny Storm for example. Yeah, totally rewrites the way him and Sue operate, but Josh Trank worked with Michael B. Jordan before, so it could have been a simple case of "this guy is a great actor and I want him in my movie" instead of diversity for diversity's sake. Sounds reasonable enough, but it is just speculation on my part.

"I just wish they chose actors based on how well their acting is!!"
White male cast as lead: Okay, I'll give this actor a chance
Minority or Women cast as lead: WTF HOLLYWOOD, WHY YOU FORCING DIVERSITY DOWN OUR THROATS?!?! IT'S JUST DIVERSITY FOR THE SAKE OF DIVERSITY!! I'm not racist or sexist tho..
that's not really the heart of her point. she points more towards the lack of original roles, in this case superheroes, when it comes to minorities and women. im fine with seeing somebody slick like Idris Elba play James Bond, seeing a Miles Morales Spider-man movie, and definitely prefer John Stewart as Green Lantern as opposed to Hal Jordan. however, as somebody who is not white, i do wonder why Hollywood has such trouble coming up with original characters that are minorities or female as opposed to placing minorities and females in the roles of characters without minority roots or a differing gender. not only is that offensive due to the implication that minority culture and femininity are not good enough for characters to be rooted in, it's extremely patronizing when somethings are obviously done for diversity sake. i don't feel empowered if i see a minority play Macbeth because Macbeth is rooted in western philosophy and is a Caucasian character with specific cultural roots, and by undermining that fact, it would be racist towards both parts. criticizing minorities to defend minorities is not productive and is inherently racist and sexist.
Well I definitely don't feel empowered when I see all these comments of people so against the idea of a black Peter Parker.
I know he's white in the comics and I know there is more source material that are black or minorities like Miles Morales, but there is not nearly enough popular minority characters and reimagining established characters to a large audience is a great way to diversify a franchise.
The people who claim that we should be offended for Hollywood "shoehorning" diversity is baffling. Are you telling me making the world's most popular superhero a minority for the "sake of diversity" should be embarrassing for us minorities? That's some backward logic.
first of all, i mentioned nothing about world's most popular superhero (it can be easily disputed anyway). secondly, i said nothing about it being wrong for minorities to portray white characters (as i have given examples). thirdly, the point you're missing is the lack of original characters that are minorities (unless you want to dispute that). i'm not trying to validate people feelings, i'm telling you that there are a lot of minorities that ALREADY feel a certain way whether you like it or not. and if you can't recognize the point, that a strong independent minority actress is bringing up btw, in which there is a lack of characters (not actors or actresses) that have minority roots then you have missed the main point of her statements as well as mine.
Well yes, that's why I said there are not many popular minority characters. I do agree that there should be a push to have more diversity in comics, but they won't be popular immediately, they have to have a following, and characters like spiderman have a diverse following. It doesn't need to be 'either or' we can still have a push to making new characters while also reimagining popular characters.
When is the last time you saw a black lead as a superhero? Yet every year we get multiple white male leads for superheros.
I think we're arguing different problems, you are concerned about lack of new and original minorities in source material while I am concerned about the lack of diversity in big budget franchises.
my comments refer to the actress's statement on this thread, being that is she explicitly advocates a push towards more original minority characters.
Iron man 2, 3, Thor 1, 2, Captain America 2, GotG, Blade 1,2,3 X-men,1, 2,3 i might be wrong but all of those movies have black superheroes where they play prominent roles.
RDJ is the lead in the iron man movies. Cap America is the lead in his movies. Blade is an example of a black lead, but his last movie was in 2004. X-men has wolverine as the lead, besides first class which I would say have Professor X and Magneto as leads. GoTG is has Peter Quill was the lead, I guess you can that Zoe Saldana was a lead, but the movie focuses on Peter Quill, hell it starts and ends with Peter's story
Sure minority actors do have a supporting role, but claiming hollywood isn't white washed when the last time a Minority actor was the central protagonist of a Superhero was in 2004.
There have been around 24 Marvel movies and 7 DC movies with white leads since the last Black lead was on the big screen.
