Those are definitely two threats that a person can protect themselves from better than the government. When seconds count, the police are just minutes away.

The fundamental question is whether you think people know what's best for themselves better than the government does. When you decide the government knows best, then you put power in their hands in the forms of regulations, licencing requirements, and such. However, even if these are well-intentioned at first, they are the type of things that businessmen can exploit to prevent competition. Why do you think cab companies are pushing to get Uber and other competitors to require licensing? Do you think they really care about the safety of the customers, or is it more likely they want that licencing as a barrier to competition? Remove such legal requirements from government and you remove the ability for people/businesses with money to exploit them.

First off, get AAA. not that expensive, you can get a package that offers 3 free tows per year of up to 100 miles each. Or you could call around to different tow companies and get different quotes instead of picking the first name you see, which is probably what you did. Try putting some effort into seeing what the market has to offer before you just whine about something being expensive in YOUR opinion. Because also, many different local mechanics will come pick up your car FOR FREE if you have it towed to their place. That's what my guy does.

And I dunno if you still have that receipt, but that story about your half-a-mile away towing company charging you 300$ seems like a seriously fabricated anecdote. And why the hell were you storing it with them anyway? You really suck at having a shitty car. I've been driving an old Nissan frontier for years and its broken down on me so many goddamned times... I have NEVER had to store it anywhere.

So I guess you haven't heard of uber and sidecar? Or carpooling? Or phoning a friend? What is your proposal anyway? Some sort of government subsidy of towing companies? A law that says you can't charge more than x amount?

Yea! I mean look at the president of the united states, and other celebrities. It's so easy, and surprisingly affordable to protect them from things like, a crazy person obsessed with jodie foster pulling out a .22 and shooting at them.

And it's so easy to protect your home. And inexpensive. You just need steel doors. breakin resistant windows, and unpickable door locks. You just, literally, need to turn your home into an unbreakable bank vault, and travel around with protection more effective than the secret service.

Any idiot could do it.

The problem, is that different people have different ideas about what's best for themselves. Particularly multinational corporations, for instance, selling you HIV tainted blood products, or non medical grade silicon implants. For instance.

Selling you hiv tainted blood products is FANTASTIC for them. Whoever thought of the idea probably got a big multimillion dollar bonus. Otherwise it's just all that inventory, down the drain. A big red mark in the deficit column in red ink.

You obviously just don't know what's good for you.
