To better compare the two new Season 2 defensive gems, it would be worth it to actually figure out exactly how much the Molten Wildebeest's Gem actually shields. The Shield takes your LPS value and doubles it - Jay Wilson style.
The [Math] for that is LPS x 2. The less obvious [Math] is how LPS is calculated, and how it works with certain Monk runes. Class A : Additive Regen (max value) A1 = Regen from Affixes on Items (92,925) A2 = Paragon Regen (10,730) A3 = Templar Regen (6,437) A4 = Mantra Base Regen (10728/21457) A5 = Enduring Ally Base Regen (10728/21456) A6 = Molten Wildebeest's Gizzard Regen (10000+Rank*1000) Class B : Bonus Regen Base Mantra of Healing = ( A1 + A2 ) * 30% >> Healing Sustenance = ( A1 + A2 ) * 60% Enduring Ally = ( A1 + A2 ) * 30% >> 2x Enduring Ally = ( A1 + A2 ) * 60% Shield Value = 2 * ΣA + 2 * ΣB So with Rank 60 Gizzard = 70,000 LPS Max Shield Solo, using Crudest + Enduring Ally with Sustenance Rune with All possible Regen Affixes on Gear = 707,981 HP Shield Max Shield Solo, using Crudest + Enduring Ally with Sustenance Rune with NO regen on gear = 353,991 HP Shield Max Shield in Group using Inna 4pc only (base runes) = 189,354 HP Shield Notes: The bonuses from Mantra of Healing & Enduring ally do NOT benefit any LPS from anything other than item affixes or paragon. This *may* be intended, or it may not be. The above severely limit the potential of this gem. Have not confirmed Gizzard shield snapshot mechanics. Mantra snapshots current gear regen. Rogar's Huge Stone is technically multiplicative. %Life Missing * %affix & LPS is added. Values pulled from google, if something is wrong, make fun of me, then post the correct value thx! Considering Most of us Monks run between 750k to 1m HP, the shield is about a 25% Health buffer. I am not sure how to compare that with Esoteric's 75% resist below 50% health yet. But from the outside, it feels like MWG frontloads your toughness while Esoteric's backloads it - or it allow you to DPS more before you feel "danger" while Eso allow you to longer to react after you recieve the "danger" notice, but may save you from death.

Nifty breakdown!

Most of melee monks run like 400 to 500kish in higher grifts?
I haven't tested but I do believe esoteric is more valuable when you play ranged style. But on a melee class the healing is crucial. Gizzard is indeed stronger and foolproof than lpss and loh and frees up a space on your weapon. However I won't stack too much lps on gears just for the shield, the only optimal one is boots because you don't get too much value on movement speed or a little armor. Not sure about the exact number but on torso and pants you can get up to like 770 armor or 11% elite reduction vs around 7.2k lps. Really can't decide which one is better |

So you're sure that the bonus regen from ally/mantra doesn't include their own or eachothers base values in the calculation? (or gizzard's extra for that matter)?

Yes, that is the conclusion described by the formula. A3, A4, A5, A6 does NOT get the 30%base/60%runed of any monk skill. The bonus only affects A1 & A2. Whether this is intended or not is the question. This *WAS* noted on PTR, but no clarification given. |
